After a lot of searching, praying, thinking. We will not be opening the barber school. I hired a lawyer to help me deal with the State of Texas. But I have chose to abandon that route after council. I do have a strong case at the State of Texas was negligent throughout my application process. But my lawyer advised me how much money are you willing to spend to prove that you're right. That being said with the new laws that they have passed for barber schools. I would still have to come into compliance after 18 months of opening. The law that they have passed now will not allow a barber school to be attached to a barber shop in any shape or form. I promise you have thought of every scenario to make it work. The rule states that it has to be completely separate entryway walled off from the barbershop. That being said there could be no access from the front of the building to the back of the building. Which makes me out of fire code with the city. And also doesn't allow students access to a restroom which is part of the criteria mandated by the state. That being said there's no way for me to become compliant with any of their wishes. My only option would be to either move the school or move the barbershop. It would be cheaper for me to move the barbershop because there's less moving parts. But after researching places to rent in the surrounding area so we don't lose our clientele. I find it very hard to afford $30,000 of build-out and $39 a square foot to rent a commercial building. I'm not really sure how small businesses make it these days with the overwhelming cost of rent. If I move into a newer spot it would cost me almost $5,000 a month in rent, electricity, insurance. I would definitely have to pass that cost on to consumer AKA our clients. I would have to raise the cost of the haircut, add more barbers and, raise the cost of booth rent for those Barbers to rent from me. I just can't find it in my heart to do that to our Client's or the Barber's. I have struggled with this decision since December. I will continue to be patient and let God show me direction.
