You know something that I don't think is talked about much by fandom? Its brought up a lot that Luz before the series was probably really lonely at school but she was probably also really lonely even when she was home too.
Now first off, I'm not one of those people who thinks Camila is a bad parent. She seems like a good woman who just wants best for her daughter even if she doesn't dully understand her. But she's also a nurse with a job that probably takes up most of her time. My mom has been a nurse for years and it wasn't uncommon for her to work almost all day most days and then come home exhausted. So I can't help but think Luz mightve faced similar issues. That's not to say that she didn't try to spend time with Luz whenever she could but I still imagine that she probably spent most of her time trying to earn money to support her family and unfortunately that kept her away from home. Remembering the bus stop scene from the first episode, one thing that struck me about it was that Camila seemed so cool leaving Luz to catch the bus while she went to work. Which implies one of two things.
She's so busy she can't even wait the few minutes it would take to wait for the bus with Luz and see her off to camp.
Luz spends so much time by herself and manages to be okay that her mom feels like she's fine leaving her by herself to catch the bus. (Not necessarily bad but it does say somethings about Luz's home life)
And it wouldn't shock me if this only exacerbated Luz's feelings of loneliness. Not only did all the kids at her school think she was a freak and avoided her but she also came home most days to an empty house where she had to find ways to entertain and distract herself. And she probably wouldn't feel like she could talk to her mom about it because she knew her mom only worked so long and so hard because she was trying to earn money for the family. She might just try to power through it.
And that might be part of why she does things like try to sell human junk with Eda at her stand. Like, she is genuinely enthusiastic about helping out but its also partly because she doesn't want to be left alone and finds it more enjoyable going with her current guardian rather than being left behind.
