Realistically, I should work on Flora’s redesign, but I’ve been thinking about my Pokémon and Winx crossover all day and want to at least sketch some thoughts

Okay, okay, it’s another sad RWBY song, but another great song for Alain is Like Morning Follows Night(by the same people as the last two. They’re the main singers for the series. The song also features Lamar Hall).

You can read it as Alain and Sycamore, Alain and Mairin, or really any duo with Alain. I think it’s a great song with Alain reflecting on his time with Lysandre and the effects of his manipulation and lies, yet they’re still both standing beside him as much as he may try to push him away. It even stands with Alain trying to push them away before/during the league after Chespie was put in a coma and both the professor and Mairin trying to stick close even when he’s pushing them away.

I think lines like “Always regretting what you've done, Spending time counting every little mistake” and “The pain is when you shut me out and take off on your own” are really powerful and encapsulated Alain’s feelings and their relationship with him, especially Sycamore’s since Alain is basically his son. Those aren’t the only ones but the song makes my brain go brr and I’ve been listening to it at work at least once every day this week, sometimes even on repeat for hour just thinking about it.

There’s more I want to say about the song, but it goes into spoiler territory for RWBY and I don’t want to spoil anything if you plan to watch the series. If you want to hear what I have to say, I’ll happily talk about it, but like I said, a lot of it is spoilers for the series itself.

HI. SORRY I TOOK SO LONG TO GET TO THIS BUT OMG. I love how direct the lyrics are.. this is crazy. Alain constantly trying to push the blame on herself while everyone around her tries to help her understand that it wasn't her fault. Like. It's true! These lyrics (aka the more direct ones) were the ones that caught my attention most..

Hi, I’ve been thinking about this all again and just about how well a number of songs focused around Blake work so well for Alain.

I do believe “Like Morning Follows Night” is the strongest, but there’s songs like “All That Matters” and “Nevermore” that also work well. Especially “Nevermore”.

With “All That Matters”, it’s originally about Blake through the character Yang’s eyes and I feel like it could be seen as Sycamore’s view of Alain, especially right before the league or during the crisis. Now, it should be stated that Blake and Yang have a very different relationship compared to Alain and Sycamore(the former being romantic and the latter being familial), but I think the lyrics can be read as platonic if you separate it from the show.

The first verse especially stands out to me for it connecting to them meeting again right before the league. It’s the first time Alain is seeing him in, presumably, months and he’s just happy to see him. Alain’s still very distant at that point and withdrawn, so he’s not telling him much, if anything at all.

The bit of chorus “Together we’re here, and that’s all that matters somehow” can reflect how Augustine looks at it all in the end. He has Alain back, he’s alive and finally in reach. He’s not regions away with contact between them cut off. He’s not concerning himself with Alain’s work with Lysandre, that’s not what’s important at that point. He’s just happy to have him back and to see him (relatively)safe.

Now, as for “The one thing I can count on, is that I can’t count on you” from the last verse, it’s not as strong. Maybe you have some way to connect it to them, but I’m personally blanking. Maybe the way Sycamore couldn’t count on any form of consistency while Alain was working with Lysandre? In the sense that phone calls were touch and go, that there was no predictability and that there could be months or weeks between them. Or maybe Sycamore being unable to know if Alain was safe during that time?

Now

“Nevermore” my beloved. Again, a Yang and Blake song, but not in the same sense as “All That Matters”. It’s their perspective on the character Adam Taurus. I think it’s a great song reflecting Ash and Alain’s outlook on Lysandre, knowing the type of pain he put them through. I’ll focus more on Alain here, but I can explain Ash if you want.

“Youth and infatuation, kept me too blind to see” is a great summary of how Alain looked up to and followed Lysandre. He promised knowledge and aid in protecting the professor, even though it was all just a ruse. Alain genuinely though he was helping him, that Lysandre had good intentions.

“I thought that justice was your goal, then in the darkness, you lost your mind, I lost my soul” is great for what happened going forward. Lysandre was consumed by his work and the pressure he put on Alain. Battling became a duty, something he needed to do to keep others safe and considering Lysandre was forcing him to become stronger for his own sake rather than Alain’s.

The whole chorus is just… perfect for him.

“Nevermore, nevermore, you'll torture my heart and my head, nevermore, nevermore, will I be afraid, nor will I run away, it's behind me, freedom is finally here, you may have taken the lead but I'll even the score, you won the battle you won't win the war, not now and, nevermore”

Alain finally takes a stand for himself in the end, fighting back against Lysandre. He breaks free from whatever control he had on him. He’s might’ve listened and held onto every word he had to say before, but now? But now he’s no longer blinded by lies and false promises.

The song overall just is great for Alain facing against Lysandre on Lumiose Tower. The fact both Alain and Blake are facing against their abusers also greatly helps when comparing her songs to his character and story.

There is also Blake’s first song, “From Shadows” from the “Black” Trailer for RWBY. I personally struggle to connect to Alain and instead connect to Riley because of the story I have set up for him and the world building I have set around aura and aura users. I’d love to talk more about that specifically, but this is about Alain and I don’t want to get too off topic.

As for the song in relation to Alain, it could work if you ignore that it takes place at the start of Blake’s story. The song best fits right after the resolution of the crisis if you headcanon Alain having a poor public image due to his involvement with Team Flare. The song originally is about the discrimination Blake and others face as faunuses(animal people, in short) and the fighting back. So, it could reflect Alain struggling to be seen past the actions he made under the guise he was doing something good, but I feel it’s not as strong.

There’s some songs for Weiss that also work well for him, but I don’t want to bombard you with too many at once

#Riley has been the nicest to me #maybe it’s because I have a better idea of how he should look in my head #but Alain and Ash were a pain when I first tried #Alain’s eyes are very boxy and Ash has stereotypical anime eyes #it’s mainly the eyes that get me #sometimes the hair too

I want to talk about Riley the way I’ve talked about Alain, but I know if I do, I’ll sound batshit insane. Given, the extent I’ve talked about Alain is song comparisons and a few bits and bobs here and there, while if I were to talk about Riley, it would be the same thing but 100x worse.

Like, guys, he is my favorite and I have all of my own lore and backstory for him because the anime, games, and manga give him so little. If you’ve read any of my fics, you know a few things, some of you know that I gave him a younger brother, but trust me, that’s just the TIP of the iceberg. He’s a little fucked up compared to canon, having trauma that he never unpacked and other issues. I love exploring his character and there’s a lot of things someone could explore with the fact he’s an aura guardian in training. It’s also a fun chance to explore what aura is and what exactly an Aura Guardian does.

Sorry for Me by Ricky Montgomery(Lmao, my first non-RWBY song) is GREAT for Alain, I think.

It’s a song about abuse and standing up to it. You have lines like “I punch my fist right through the wall” that fit scenes in the series and “Now that it's over, I don't know how to feel” go with that feeling of breaking free from it, yet still feeling guilt and confined. Lysandre is gone, but it doesn’t mean he’s hurting any less. It doesn’t mean any wounds, physical or mental, are healed and gone. And then there’s the final bit of the chorus “I wouldn't want to make you sorry for me” where it could be read as Alain not waiting any words of sympathy from Lysandre because he knows they’re not genuine, that they’re coming from a place of disgust or malice because Alain’s finally turning his back on him.
