THE SADNESS BEHIND urbosa's smile did not go unnoticed by zelda, & she found herself shaking her head. ❝ it's alright. i'm alright. ❞ though her praying, devotions & trips to the springs could take a toll, it was nothing that she couldn't handle. & now was not the time to allow herself to complain–––– it had been far too long since she'd last seen her godmother. she wouldn't let this time be taken up with negative feelings over something that zelda knew that she could not change.

A CHANGE IN subject that felt like a breath of fresh air. zelda was always willing to share the progress and findings of her research.

❝ most of the specimens are thriving! many of them are quite far from their habitats, & i wasn't sure if they would grow with our more mild temperatures so close to hyrule field. ❞

THE AREA AROUND the castle lacked the subzero temperatures of the highlands & mountain peaks, the heat of the desert & eldin, or the tropical conditions of faron. it had been a dilemma that she had been determined to face head on, knowing her father never would have allowed her the time she needed in those regions to study the plant life as in––––depth as she wished.

❝ but, it's an obstacle we've managed to work around! soon, we should have enough that we can begin to use even the rarer plants in our elixir tests–––– well, all of them with the exception of the silent princess, which is proving to remain just as stubborn as i've read it would be. ❞

THOUGH HER ARMS crossed & she had begun turning over her most recent problem in her mind, she knew that now wasn't the time to go so in––––depth about her projects. instead, her focus turned to urbosa, noticing her tense shoulders & he amount of makeup she wore for the first time.

ZELDA STEPPED A bit closer, doing her best to disguise the way she was studying her godmother's face.

❝ forgive me for saying so, but you seem more tired than i would have expected. ❞

URBOSA HAD ONLY been in the castle for a day, & zelda had never seen her so tired after travelling to visit them before.

Urbosa almost wished it wasn't such a grand celebration - before circumstances had gotten so dire, Urbosa made a point to visit at least once every few months. Even with her involvement in preventing Calamity, she was only able to physically attend to the Castle a few times a year now. The desert was seeing increased monster activity by the day, and though their populace was perhaps best prepared for it, that didn't mean they made it through unscathed. Trading routes were disrupted,  both externally to Hyrule and internally to the Southern and Western reaches of the Gerudo nation. That Urbosa was able to bring her daughter Etanna at all was a small mercy.

Etanna and the others had settled in for the night, but Urbosa was restless as ever. Truthfully, she hadn't been sleeping well in quite some time. Traveling only added to the barriers between her and sleep, but as ever, she had an excuse not to worry her little bird. Zelda was too concerned about everything, especially at such a young age. She didn't need to saddle her with any other anxieties.

"Oh, Zelda..." She couldn't help the sigh that fell her lips, nor the sad, small smile that acoompanied it. Rhoam meant the best for Zelda and their kingdom - Urbosa reminded herself of this constantly - but seeing the toll it took on the young girl... Well, Urbosa had to remind herself that it would hinder, not help Zelda if she reminded him that the late Queen hadn't worked a quarter this hard for her powers.

"And how are the flowers?" Botany was not Zelda's favorite subject, but it was close. Anything to get her off the near-endless drudgery of her duties was a win in Urbosa's mind, though she'd never had much of a head for biology.

Urbosa smiled and shook her head, though her square shoulders betrayed her lies. "All's well, little bird. You know we mostly sleep during the day - I just haven't adjusted yet."

She wore more foundation than she used to, some of it to cover up wrinkles, but more to hide the bruises under her eyes. Though her powder fought a valiant fight, it was losing the latter front up close.

     WHEN SHE HAD returned to her kingdom after her century with the beast, she had felt powerful. even when she thought her power gone for good, that had not changed–––– the elation of winning a century long battle carrying her along her exploration of her changed kingdom. she would have been lying if she said that she hadn’t felt as wordy as she felt divine. but now, sitting before HIM, she felt like a child again. pleading for understanding, searching for knowledge that he held but she refused to ask for. ❝ i wanted to find something that would help us. ❞

     IT HAD BEEN her own research that had led her there, searching for something to save them should her power fail ( as she had been so sure that it would ). she could not let him turn her hopes for the future of her people into something so simple as the whims of a child.

     HIS MAGIC SWELLED, & so did her own to meet it. it was as frustrating as it was fascinating–––– that her power that had been dim & fleeting since her return would not only awaken once more, but flow through her veins & thrum under her skin at simply the threat of his presence. ❝ something that would protect my kingdom from a destiny that i didn’t choose! ❞ & could not change, no matter how much she wished it.  ❝ something that would save us from you. ❞

It is frankly insane to me that second quest does not exist

Nobody knew how much time they had to prepare. Even the soothsayer who delivered the prophesy to the late queen could only make a guess that in twenty years the Calamity would return. They had to do everything they could to prevent disaster from destroying the land, possibly the entire globe.

These platitudes were all true, and none of them were helping Urbosa down from her minor rage as she made the well-worn path to the princess’s chambers. She and Roahm had… Differing opinions as to the proper upbringing of Zelda, particularly when it came to unlocking her sealed powers. As perhaps the most diametrically opposite rulers in the near realm, perhaps it was ironic that they had to work in such close proximity.

She stood outside the door a moment, breathing out the barely spoken words - “I’m going to kill your father,” so they wouldn’t be spoken in Zelda’s company. Roahm scolded her enough, she didn’t need more stress put on her already overburdened shoulders.

It wasn’t only the king’s methodology that bothered her. She knew her own mother would have been far more lenient. No, it was the apparently constant berating that the princess received for something that she had little control over. If the royal family’s gift was anything like her own, there was no controlling when it became apparent. She hadn’t been able to command lightning until she was fifteen, her mother hadn’t demonstrated it until she was almost of age, and her own daughter started showing sparks as young as six. It was entirely idiosyncratic, and damn near torture wasn’t going to-

She stopped herself again. A hand pressed to her chest, counting her heartbeats until they were calm enough to see her Goddaughter. She had a soft smile across her lips, though her eyes held a pitying twinkle - if only for her physical state.

“It was unplanned, don’t worry. My wife was on business in Hateno and requested me.”

She situated herself on a trunk by the bedside, worried the chair wouldn’t provide enough support for her frame.

“Don’t worry yourself about it, little bird. I’m more worried about that flush than your dress.”

The poor girl, she looked like she hadn’t slept in a week…

“How goes your research?”

     ZELDA COULDN’T HELP but smile in return. urbosa’s presence always found a way to make her feel better–––– it didn’t matter whether the ailment was physical or mental, her godmother’s presence was always a relief. 

     ❝ if i had known stanna was so near, i would have taken some time to see her.  ❞

     THOUGH THE THOUGHT was was nice one, zelda almost immediately deflated. her father would have only agreed to the visit so long as it didn’t interrupt her trip to the spring. which meant, even if she had scheduled a visit, her illness would have forced her to cancel those plans, which would have inevitably been a worse outcome.

     ❝ there’s no need to worry, this isn’t––––. ❞

     SHE WAS GOING to say that it wasn’t anything she hadn’t handled before. it was the truth. this was far from the first fever that she had received after one of her trips to the springs, and with many more trips scheduled in her future until the elusive power of her bloodline decided to show herself, zelda doubted it was going to be the last. but, such a reminder had the possibility of upsetting her godmother, and she didn’t want to say anything that would change the light nature of their conversation.

     ❝ ––––nearly as bad as it looks. if nothing else, at least it’s given me a bit more free time. ❞

     SO MUCH OF her schedule had been changed and shifted to accommodate her sickness. there had been no devotions or visiting temples to pray with priestesses. but, she also wasn’t able to visit the royal tech lab to study ancient technology. the most she could do was read through her books and journals, but even that was difficult to do with such a lack of her usual energy. 

     ❝ it’s been inconclusive, i’m afraid. ❞

     HER FINGERS THUMBED through the pages of the book that she had set by her side, and she gave it a cursory glance before her attention turned back to urbosa.

     ❝ i can’t seem to find any other mention of the supposed columns that store the guardians. the records we have of them are less than specific, and i’ve gone searching myself several times based on what information i could gather, and yet i can’t seem to––––.   ❞

     HER RAMBLING ENDED abruptly, cut off by a series of coughs that made her shoulders tremble. it took her a moment to steady herself.

      ❝ i’m sorry. the physician said the worst of it is over, but my symptoms will probably linger for a few more days. ❞
