hi barbie!!
i am patiently awaiting the rest of your tortured poets department takes when you are ready to share them. thank you in advance!
sincerely,
your fellow intern 💌
Hi darling! 💛 I will give you my less “instant gut punch” and borderline trauma dumping takes here. 😭I’ll get into the Substack post in the morning (the funeral skipping lore is so much, I will dive into it more😭)! 💛
First, earnestly defending her right to date a nasty racist is certainly a choice. Hate the muse a lot! I feel like she’s kind of messed up her view of what criticism is and what it means? It’s not always baseless, Ms. Swift!
Anyway, further takes! The second half of the album is phenomenal. The first half is so sonically cohesive it almost becomes boring. For a while I could barely differentiate between each song.
From the first half, my top three (excluding So, Long London.) were:
Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?- The imagery in this song is incredible. She’s enraged. She’s dead. She’s a ghost. She’s haunting everyone. She’s a caged circus animal. It’s so visceral. The production works flawlessly with her lyrics. It’s literally like a score from a horror film. But I hate the way the song builds up to a natural crescendo and then she abruptly stops and slows it down again. It just feels too jarring for a song that flowed so perfectly from the beginning.
Florida!!!- I’m a simple woman. Florence starts singing and whatever it is, I love it. I love the ambiguity of it all. I love the hooks, the paradox of your home being a place you’re a guest, a place where you’re a criminal, instead of the way we usually view home as a sanctuary. The production is incredible. It’s frenetic and frenzied. It’s jarring and loud. Florence’s backing vocals are incredible.
The Alchemy- It’s so atmospheric. It’s not even particularly well written compared to the other songs on the album, but the flow of the music just draws you in. The production brings this song to life. It feels like an early 2000s song you’d hear on the radio in the summer. Just great vibes.
From the second half my top three are:
How Did it End?- The mortifying ordeal of being known. The instrumental being stripped back for so much of the song gives it a haunting quality. The piano is the loudest instrument in the song, the absence of any other bold production tactics perfectly captures the soul baring essence of the song. It’s simple. She doesn’t know how it ended. She’s both asking and being asked.
The Prophecy- A classic case of hope vs. faith! She has hope that she will find love again. She doesn’t have faith in it. That’s why she’s begging. Hope is good, but faith is more tangible. The lines “I guess a lesser woman would’ve lost hope/A greater woman wouldn’t beg”, alone make this essential listening. She’s too proud to lose hope. She’s not proud enough to not beg.
Cassandra- Personally, I believe she telepathically connected her brain to Meghan Markle’s to write this. I don’t care about the lore or the whole story with K*nye and the Kardashians. “Blood’s thick, but nothing like a payroll?” “You can mark my words that I said it first /In a mourning warning no one heard?” It’s about being hung out to dry while knowing that you’re not the first woman this has happened to and you won’t be the last! The family will protect its own, not out of love but out of desire to protect its entrenched financial interests. It’s about the fact that you will be punished by both the men and women around you when you step out of line. They remain silent while she is tormented and when she’s vindicated. 10/10 song. Great storytelling.
What are your thoughts my fellow intern? 💌💛

I'm genuinely curious
I had this idea because I realized I definitely had a year where everything bad seemed to happen and I'd call it my worst, but I don't know if other people have years like this.

Beyoncé never said you have to forgive your man and try to fix things, she said she chose to forgive her cheating ass husband.
Acknowledging that her reasons, whatever they were, were likely rooted in societal conditioning is not a bad thing! And that’s a discussion worth having. But to make it seem like she personally let you down by exercising her own agency is crazy.
Acting like she is personally holding a gun to your head and telling you to stay with a man who treats you badly is also crazy. She’s not giving you dating advice. She’s singing her songs and doing her job.
Society as a whole reacts so poorly towards women having and using their agency. If a woman stays with a man who has hurt her, she gets derided and mocked. If she leaves a man who has hurt her, she gets derided and mocked.
If you’re never going to win, then why not just make the choice you know you will be able to live with?

Yeah the reaction to Bey’s Jolene was...definitely weird. It is objectively a good interpretation! The lyric changes were on brand, her vocals were gorgeous and that men’s chorus was inspired! I would’ve liked the song better if I didn’t know Jay Z existed but that doesn’t justify some of the responses I’ve seen.
Very weird! Especially because it’s literally the same song in a different font.
I agree, her vocals and the arrangement of the song were absolutely incredible! And truly, if you think about it, of course Bey wasn’t going to sing the original lyrics?
My personal thing with Jay Z is that I consider him one of the greatest rappers of all time, so I cannot hop on board with the rest of the Hive in hoping he disappears forever. 😔 The Black Album is a masterpiece from start to finish. (And this is coming from a girl whose first “real” concert was Destiny’s Child and fell asleep to their music almost every night as a kid.)
People just love to use him as a stick to beat Bey with, and it’s so confusing? She’s not giving anyone relationship advice, she’s singing her songs and living her life. He cheated and it nearly killed her. Why is that something to throw in her face?

People are always so eager to wield Beyoncé’s husband’s misdeeds against her. He nearly tore their family apart, but she’s the one who continually gets insulted and punished.

Who are the other couple that you hate from bridgerton? The one in season 1 (I honestly can't remember their names) or Colin and Penelope? And why?
I found Daphne and the hot Duke (can’t remember his name either 😭😭) boring but passable, I don’t go back to the first season often, but I remember it being enjoyable, if a bit weird at times.
I dislike Colin and Penelope because they have no chemistry, the viewers have absolutely no reason to root for a Penelope redemption arc right now, and they spent all of season two setting up the C/P arc with everyone and their weird cousin, relegating Kate and Anthony to supporting characters in their own season.

astro transits and universal energies are wild. i was getting readings and astro analyses about how 2024 would be a huge shift, endings and beginnings, etc etc. now tell me why i'm feeling the pull and getting the call to move on from tumblr? my popular sideblog (used to average hundreds of notes per day as close back as december) has been silent since the top of the year even though all my moots are still online and we're all still posting regularly. i was thinking at first that i did something but then i was getting the BIGGEST urge in my gut to be "in the real world" which was then kinda reiterated one astro look (and tarot reading) later. i'm mentally saying goodnight to my blog as we speak
i can never hate on astrology, idk how men do it 😭
I am so proud of you bestie! Reconnecting to the real world and tangible things has been such a prevalent theme this year, it’s crazy. 2024 really told me to get tf off the internet too, and it’s been so freeing! Hate it when Saturn and Pisces are right about things. 😔
I could never bring myself to hate on astrology, I don’t know how men do it either. I guess that’s why 99% of them are unevolved *insert sun sign here*. Like how do you explain that energy shift in everyone? That’s not random besties!

but are you golden eagle pretty or white-breasted nuthatch pretty, barbie
Justice for the Grey Falcon/Sparrow Hawk pretty girlies. We’re always overlooked compared to the White-breasted Nuthatch girlies. 😔
But the Golden Eagle girlies are not valid! I stand by that!
