Adding fics to AO3 collections as a reader

Depending on what other sites you read on, you might think of a Collection as a kind of bookshelf for stories you like. And it can be that, but that's not the only thing collections were intended for.

According to the FAQ, "A collection is a group of works and/or bookmarks compiled together under one theme." They can be used for a fandom fest or challenge. They can be used by an author to organize their works. And they can also be used by readers to organize the stories they've read.

The important thing to keep in mind when adding something to a collection is: are you adding the fic or are you adding a bookmark of the fic?

If you, as a reader, try to add an author's fic to your collection, that author will get an email asking them if they want to let you do that. A lot of authors will say no. This is because the owner of the collection can hide all of the works in a collection, making them invisible to anyone else on the Archive. This feature exists to support fandom exchanges, challenges, and fests where all of the works get revealed on the same day.

If you, as a reader, want to create a collection then I recommend bookmarking the fic and checking off the box in the bookmark form that says "Add to collection." This will add just your bookmark to your collection, not the fic itself. You will not need the author's permission, and nothing you do will affect the fic itself or hide it from the rest of the Archive.

Collections of bookmarks can be a great way to organize your favourite fics, and you can add a bookmark to more than one collection at a time. You have a fic that is about your favourite character AND it's fluff AND it's canon compliant? You can add it to a Character Collection, a Fluff Collection, and a Canon Compliant collection and then no matter which of those moods you're in, you'll still have it right there waiting for you to read it.

You need to create your collection first, and it will take a couple hours for the collection to appear for you to add bookmarks to it, but once you've got your collections set up, you can just keep adding bookmarks to them pretty much forever.

tl;dr collect bookmarks, not fics and organize your bookmarks in a whole new way

addendum: if you are an author and you have allowed your work to be added to a collection, you can remove it at any time

Heey i know this is probably weird as heck, 2 years after the last update, but i LOVE your Ruins fanfiction and I JUST found it - way too late - and was wondering if you have any plans of finishing it? It's so good it makes me physically hurt ;_;

I cannot believe it's been 2 years since my last update, ugh! Honestly, right at the moment my creative energies are focused elsewhere (primarily on running the Curse of Strahd module for some good friends). But I bounce back and forth when it comes to the DA fandom, and I have no doubt I'll be back again at some point - though, unfortunately, I can't give you a solid timeframe or anything like that. I want to finish the projects I have outstanding, and I really want to do that before DA4 is looming over my head as a very final deadline. (Fortunately for me, I guess, Bioware doesn't seem to be getting anywhere close to telling us when that will happen.)

Thank you SO much for reading Ruins, and for reaching out to me. I'm glad you liked it!! I hope I can give you more of it someday soon.

Here’s a bit from the next chapter of Overgrown:

“I know you are not actually asleep. You can drop the act now - Alexius is on the other side of the clearing.”

Ellana opened one eye and peered up at Solas. “How’d you know?”

“Because you are far too inquisitive to have resisted eavesdropping on that conversation, which was loud enough that you must have been alerted to it.”

That was true, but he really didn’t need to be such an ass about it, Ellana thought.

“Also.” Solas’ rolled his shoulders as he clasped his hands behind his back, and then avoided her gaze. “You snore.”

“I do not!” Ellana said, flying upright.

“You absolutely do. Though not loudly enough to wake yourself, apparently.”

“Great. Fine,” Ellana said, horrified. “We can debate the finer points of my sleeping habits when we’re not being violently threatened by some Tevinter shithead.”

Writing (along with everything else, tbh) has been slow recently, but this new chapter of Love All is slowly taking form. Hawke starts teaching Fenris how to drive in this one, which is very fun to write, but I’ve also got a whole tournament planned for this chapter, so we’ll see if I decide to split them up. This scene came with a great opportunity for some reflections on youth-related banter, so:

“I’ve gotta say, though, I kinda like the idea of a hopeful, cocky little Fenris. It’s cute.”

“Bah! You would not have liked me. Especially not when you were sixteen.” His dismissive hand gesture is betrayed by the half-smirk on his lips.

She waggles her eyebrows at him. “Au contraire, serah. You overestimate my teenage self’s taste in men. Besides, you were probably tall. Didn’t take much more to do it for me back then.”

“I thought you said not much has changed.”

There’s a laugh in his eyes, along with a question, and damnit, she wants to kiss him again, every sunlit inch of him until he’s laughing warm honey in her arms. But instead, she whips her head forward, the sunset in front of them unwelcomely beautiful, soft peaches and pinks melding with fiery orange to signal the end of another hopeful summer day.

“Maybe not,” she says softly, then coughs before her stupid mouth gets her into trouble again. “Do you wanna give this another go? It’s up to you.” She taps the steering wheel with her index finger, which seems to jolt Fenris.

“Ah. Yes, alright.”

WIP Wednesday

True to form, I started three new one-shots while I was away. Here’s some Alistair genfic.

Alistair’s head throbbed. For some indeterminate amount of time, that was all he knew: the throbbing of his head just here above the eye, sometimes just a little knife stabbing, more often a great broadsword thrusting. 

 But at some point in his endless torment, a thought came to him, followed by an observation, and finally an opinion. He didn’t know where he was, he was not alone, and it was a real shame that whatever had tried to kill him hadn’t finished the job.

 "Maker’s breath, he’s still alive.”

 Alistair didn’t recognize the voice, but he couldn’t argue with the conclusion.Yet.

 “Bollocks.”

 Another stranger.

“He is! I swear I just saw him move,” replied the much more observant of the two.

Alistair groaned a little, just to be included in the conversation, and tried to drag himself to his feet. He succeeded in flopping over on one side. 

The second voice—and much less pleasant one to Alistair’s ear— replied, “Just smother him with a pillow or something." 

 Ah. So there was still time to finish the job after all.
