belial is the worst tsc villian ever because his motivations make no sense and are quite frankly stupid. why did he spend a whole book putting an enormous amount of effort into possessing Jesse and killing a grand total of five people and very briefly summoning his brother to earth to fight one (1) Institute... like in what way did any of that help achieve his ultimate goal of crowning himself King of England I don't get it. mind you he's a literal Prince of Hell and claims he's the one who gave Lucifer the idea to rebel against God like truly why does he care this much 💀

Can you tell us the original ending you planned for chain of thorns?

I can tell you part of it was older James on his deathbed, and as he lay dying seeing all of his friends who had died so horribly so long ago waiting for him on the other side, and thinking how he had never had friends again like the ones he had when he was young.

(Certainly an ending that would have wiped out any possibility of future TLH projects or stories with those characters in them.)

can't stop thinking about how after belial 'died', another new belial just showed up who is the same but not the same, which conveniently means james and lucie lose their powers (but tessa doesn't), and then just. asks jem to tell the herondales that he doesn't want to fuck with them? and is like 'cool, i, a prince of hell, will now owe you, a random silent brother, a favour, because you delivered a message for me'.

what. what was that. why (i know it's so that belial could owe jem a favour in gotsm but WHY THIS). i finished the book a couple of weeks ago but this damn coda won't leave my mind. it haunts me when i try to sleep. make it make sense

Chain of Thorns Analysis (1/2)

All my thoughts on Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare

In part one of my chot analysis, I'm covering some of my most basic issues with the plot and writing, Jesse's lack of a storyline and how it affected both Grace and Tatiana's arcs, and the fact Lucie definitely did necromancy and got away with it.

Jesse’s existence challenges the status quo, and it makes it seem like we will get his story because people don’t want to hear it but it needs to be heard. It sets the stage for Jesse to prove the line is blurred. For him to be our voice of reason between the haziness of good and evil, since he walks the line. But instead the story focuses primarily on the black and white with James and Cordelia vs. Belial and Lilith. 

I would’ve loved to see Jesse be the one to erase that line when it came to both Grace and his mother.

The Merry Thieves are an echo chamber. They hate and love together for the most part — this is why Thomas was so afraid to admit his feelings for public enemy No. 1 Alastair. Jesse was an outside perspective that could’ve challenged them, yet he left Christopher to defend Grace on his own.

That is what I’ll never understand. The choice for Jesse to be the most condemning of Grace when he knew in part the brutal conditions their mother bound her by. If anybody should be her advocate to say she did what she did out of fear after a life of abuse and conditioning, it should be Jesse, who was also used as a pawn by their mother. 

I don’t think the narrative really did Grace’s character justice without his voice.

anna and ari most realistic messy lesbian relationship of all time they had a one week fling in high school that ruined their ability to ever have normal relationships again. stayed obsessed with each other for years while barely speaking. started a situationship with feelings just because they could even though everyone around them is telling them it’s a bad idea. breakup their not-relationship only to be heartbroken for like a week before moving in together while one falls out with her family. end up u-hauling and staying together for eternity eventually becoming that old butch/femme couple that coordinates their outfits and throws the coolest parties ever for all their other gay friends. perfect. no notes.

One thing Thorns confirmed for me is that Cassie released the family tree before she planned on continuing with this era of shadowhunters and then was like “oh shit” and had to come up with an excuse for it
