Tony wanted to fight more about Barnes, but he had just gotten Cassandra back- a fight could wait until morning.
He gave a resigned sigh and lay his head on the girl’s shoulder, trying to force himself to not thinking about Steve or Barnes for at least a few minutes. “After New York, people are worried about what we’re capable of. We did a lot of damage to the city, even if we saved it, and there’s talk of having us work on government emergency calls instead of whenever we think we need to fight.”
“There’s a hundred plus countries involved,” he continued. “And honestly, I agree with them. The Avenger initiative is a good idea, in theory, but it causes a lot of damage unchecked. The convention would decide how far the regulations would go, and put the team only in desperate emergencies when a majority of the United Nations agrees to use them.”
He paused. “I think it’s a safer option. It keeps the team from constantly being in use and on edge, and keeps certain people from leading us into fights we have no business being in.”
**
Lydia was rapidly discovering a side effect of her captivity- intense paranoia. Knowing that there was known Hydra members within the organization was terrifying, and honestly, she wasn’t sure if she had much trust in anyone beyond the immediate team. Fury might be an exception that, but she was still a bit hesitant with him.
She felt like she couldn’t breathe- her lungs felt like iron, and her hands were shaking- when Steve was suddenly in front of her, her face in his hands as his deep voice spoke quietly and calmly.
Her hand flew up to grab one of his, like she was trying to pull herself back to Earth with it. She hadn’t had a panic attack before, and she didn’t like the feeling one bit.
What she didn’t like even more though is that for the first time, she was almost doubting Steve. She had seen what Hydra could do firsthand- how could anyone stop them once you were caught in their trap?
She stared into Steve’s blue eyes that were searching her own with concern as she tried to slow down her heart rate.
“Promise me,” she said abruptly. “Promise me that you’ll tell me whatever’s going on behind the scenes, even if you think it will scare me. I- I can’t be kept in the dark anymore, even if you think it’s for my own good. And-“
She paused, the next words hard to get out due to sheer fear of rejection.
“And promise me,” she continued, her voice dropping just barely above a whisper, “That if things really..do get that dangerous here, that you’ll leave with me. I can’t go back to them, Steve, I just can’t- but I refuse to be away from you ever again.”

Avengers, Assemble!
Tony paused in the doorway, watching with conflicting sides of curiosity and dread at the blue light dancing along Cassandra’s fingers.
It was an impressive power- no doubt about it. But he also say the dread in her eyes, and the way she tried to hide it from him.
He turned and closed the door, trying to act casual- last thing they needed was another meltdown.
It was good for him to see her cleaned up and looking a bit more like herself, even if he didn’t like the uncertainty in her eyes.
“Maybe I should call you Sparky now,” he joked as he came to sit by the girl on the bed.
**
Lydia gave a half smile as she brushed his hair back off his forehead. “Thank you, Steve,” she replied quietly. “But..for now, I think there are some things I can’t quite talk about.”
Her eyes met his, a certain kind of maturity there that hadn’t been. The past three months had aged the girl mentally. “Besides,” she continued. “Tomorrow’s a big day if I’m going to meet with Bucky. Let’s not waste our time together while we have it.”
She chuckled wryly. “Knowing Fury, our lives are about to get busy again.”

“Besides the star-spangled stick up his ass?” Tony asked dryly.

It’s a long story. We handled the last three months a little differently, and he is against the convention completely.”
He paused, obviously just getting started on the man. “And this whole thing with Barnes has me really pissed off,” he admitted angrily. “He sees some guy from the 40s holding his girlfriend hostage, and his knee-jerk reaction is that he needs to be saved? Bullshit!”
He was angry. He was angry that Steve had to constantly act like the hero. He hated that he had to constantly live up to America’s Golden Boy. He was angry that Steve was fighting the convention, something that he felt badly needed to happen.
And honestly? He partly blamed Cap for the girl’s disappearance. He couldn’t even say why, but he had felt resentful from day one.
**
Lydia paused, her brow furrowing as she listened to Steve. “Wait- Steve, hold on,” she interrupted, looking at him seriously. “What do you mean, Hydra’s gotten into SHIELD?”
She felt her panic flare up again. “Steve, this is major. Cassandra and I have to be together for our powers to work to the max. If SHIELD really isn’t safe anymore, there’s no way they’ll let me stay in the background, not if it means losing that extra boots of power.”
She abruptly stood, trying to think back over the last three months as she walked to her window.
“Something’s not clicking,” she muttered as she looked out over the landscape. “Why isn’t this clicking?”
Suddenly, she froze, going rigid. “It was too easy,” she whispered in horror before turning to face Steve again, her eye wide in panic.
“It was too easy,” she repeated, panic lacing her voice. “Why didn’t I see that before?! For three months, I had constant guards around us, but that day, it was only Jason and the two agents in Cassandra’s room. Don’t you see, Steve? They meant for this to happen. They meant for us to escape and come back here.”
