Every 21st century piece of writing advice: Make us CARE about the character from page 1! Make us empathize with them! Make them interesting and different but still relatable and likable!
Every piece of classic literature: Hi. It's me. The bland everyman whose only purpose is to tell you this story. I have no actual personality. Here's the story of the time I encountered the worst people I ever met in my life. But first, ten pages of description about the place in which I met them.

Ten questions to ask a friend who just read your novel
Here are ten questions to ask that will not put your friend in a tough spot, but will still give you some useful input on your novel:
1. At what point did you feel like “Ah, now the story has really begun!”  2. What were the points where you found yourself skimming?  3. Which setting in the book was clearest to you as you were reading it? Which do you remember the best?  4. Which character would you most like to meet and get to know?  5. What was the most suspenseful moment in the book?  6. If you had to pick one character to get rid of, who would you axe?  7. Was there a situation in the novel that reminded you of something in your own life?  8. Where did you stop reading, the first time you cracked open the manuscript? (Can show you where your first dull part is, and help you fix your pacing.)  9. What was the last book you read, before this? And what did you think of it? (This can put their comments in context in surprising ways, when you find out what their general interests are. It might surprise you.)  10. Finish this sentence: “I kept reading because…”
Your friend is probably still going to tell you, “It was good!” However, if you can ask any specific questions, and read between the lines, you can still get some helpful information out of even the most well-meaning reader.

—about ME
I'm elena, or beaumont (he/she), and I'm reintroducing myself again! When I'm not disappearing for months at a time to be a college student, I write mostly adult litfic novels and short stories, but I dabble in playwriting and poetry.
some things I like to put in my work — lesbians, horrible relationships, weird povs, unlikeable protagonists, retellings, historical fiction, femme fatales and evil women, transgenderism, fabulism, freaks.
—my PROJECTS
[if you'd like to be on the taglist for any of these, drop me a line!]
Tumblr media
PAINTED TYRANT - when a brutal and secretive 1920's mob boss is found dead in his office, his hedonistic and fatally dependent long-time lover and his business-partner wife must solve his murder and reckon with the collapse of an empire—over the course of a single summer night.
[if you like: unreliable narrators, codependency, lavender marriages, trans characters, weird throuples, the great gatsby, murder mystery dinner parties] [adult historical literary fiction, third person present]
Tumblr media
EIDOLON - an early-nineteenth-century russian socialite renowned for her beauty is coached for marriage from birth by her controlling father, caught in a complicated relationship with her twin brother, married to a man who hates her, and ascending to the role of queen of society—while slowly embracing an extraordinary gift for getting what she wants.
[if you like: family trauma, femme fatales, twins, war and peace, non-linear narrative, retellings, villain origin stories, bisexuality] [adult historical literary fiction with fabulist elements, first person retrospective + second person present]
Tumblr media
KITCHEN WINTER - two women in a failing marriage compete to destroy the lives of their new neighbors—a middle-aged lesbian couple and their teenage children—while they themselves spiral further into illness, abuse, and decay.
[if you like: toxic relationships, awful lesbians, experimental POV, tallahassee by the mountain goats, unlikeable protagonists] [adult literary fiction, first person plural + singular present]
—what's NEXT?
Currently, I'm working on drafting Painted Tyrant, so expect to see that! And hopefully a proper wip intro. Can't promise it will be a ton, I'm a very slow writer, and just extraordinarily overbooked, but I'm excited about the project. As far as other miscellaneous projects, I might post about short fiction or my d&d characters, who's to say, it's my world. That's all for now—if you're interested in my projects, or you think I'd like your stuff, don't be shy! Also happy to be tagged in games or sent asks, would love to make some new mutuals.

Neurotypical writers giving advice: Be realistic with your goals. Try to outline or write a little every day. Refill the well. Get yourself a cup of tea and write for 30 minutes until the tea is empty. Check in daily with your accountability buddies for the next three to six months.
ADHD writers giving advice: Put on a movie that matches the tone of your novel to kickstart your dopamine and get into hyperfocus, then put a song on loop on noise-cancelling headphones, livestream your writing session so you feel watched and owe someone accountability, and write as much as you can for as long as you can. Don't forget to eat, sleep or drink. Now go write that novel in 5 days.

Shout out to my friend @theinternationalacestation for giving me the topic and helping me put this list together. She’s the best, and you can read her fic under the name yellow_caballero on AO3.
Of the above, the flash fiction, short stories, and one of the novellas are all available free and legally online. And they’re just the tip of the iceberg! There’s so much great short science fiction and fantasy short fiction out there. If you enjoy these stories and want to read more, take a look at some of the magazines’ other stories. Special shout out to Uncanny Magazine’s recent Disabled People Destroy Fantasy issue. Also, RIP to Apex Magazine, I miss you a ton.
Most of the short stories didn’t have illustrations, so I made do with clip art and stock photos of varying degree of relevance.
Below the cut, I’m linking to the short stories in question. For the books, I’m linking to the Goodreads pages. I hope you guys find some stories you love!

Hey op, I’m a character animator and I might be able to help out a bit and also give some explanation as to why wip 4 might make your eyes dizzy.
The short answer is that wip 3 reads more organic to natural motion, whereas wip 4 feels more accelerated.
The longer answer is a bit more technical. I hope it may help a bit, but I think I figured out what’s going on between both wips. I have more information below the cut if a breakdown of that would help out.
Wip 3 definitely has a more natural feel to it, the spacing and timing feels very organic when the character is bringing their arm up, the change in facial expression isn’t drawn out too long at all but doesn’t feel too quick, and I really like the overlapping action with the earring, that’s a really nice little touch.
So as for wip 4, the reason it feels more sped up is because the timing and spacing may have been drawn in a way that fits the 30 fps rather than the 24fps. It also depends on factors such as how many frames are you animating on, animating on 1s will look much more accelerated to animating on 2s, 3s, or 4s. Spacing’s important because if the spacing is very close together it smoothly slows down the image, whereas if the spacing is further apart it will give the illusion of accelerated speed. Image down here kind of breaks it down.
Tumblr media
So what I’m thinking is if wip 4′s spacing is further apart which is why when it’s applied to 24 fps it reads as much quicker than it is in 30fps. To try to confirm this I tried to go through and look at the images frame by frame however WebIP is my worst enemy and wouldn’t let me download a proper gif so I hope this explanation helps nonetheless. As well, depending on what software you use, some animation software has you set a frame rate before you start animating. I’m mostly familiar with TVPaint and Harmony and in both of those softwares I have to set what the playback framerate is. If your playback framerate in your software is set to 30, that might also contribute as to why the playback feels more naturalistic than the 24fps.
Hope that this helps and awesome work on your wips! Can’t wait to see the final work.

so wip 3 (first one) is 30 fps ;  i like the speed of that one more but it cuts out some frames i think
wip 4 (second one) is 24 fps and has all the frames but goodness my eyes feel dizzy looking at it
which one is better !!!! help!@!!!!
