2022 Art Summary

So here's my 2022 Art Summary that others are doing. On a personal level, this year really sucked. But hey... I'm actually liking my art now and think I could do something good with it! Only took three decades. :P

Reboot 2023

So... 

I'd like to say it's because of Covid, but truthfully, it's been a thing long before then too. I've been playing catch up with myself for far too long. I fell out of the comic making groove about a decade ago, and I never quite got back in. In 2017 I started Stargazer Apogee with the intent of getting back into it all. But not long after, I got married, we moved, bought a house, had a new career, and I was starting to have some health issues... It was kinda hard to keep on making a comic. Not to mention, I was coming into this with a “webcomics 2010″ mindset which is NOT how webcomics (or webtoons) are done anymore. And my art was going through a shift in styles at that time too. When I started, it was still traditionally penciled and inked... Then digitally inked... And it just kept harder to match up how I was drawing NOW to how I was drawing at the start of the comic. And then there was the script, which was constantly undergoing rewrites, as I was drawing it. (Which is not the greatest way to get back into groove.) And that’s not even counting the issues that the Pandemic caused. I just was never able to catch up to where I left off, much less where I left off a decade ago. On the plus side, my art DID get better! I mean, my art now is better than it’s ever been in my life.  Then earlier this year... Things sucked. My father died. My family were tools about it. I had some serious issues at work with some projects. I had some health issues that I’ll keep private, My wife and I had Covid back to back, my wonderful dog died out of nowhere and I had my first panic attack. This was all in a span of three months. And I spent weeks just trying to feel normal again. Something that never came and now I’m seeing a therapist and got diagnosed with severe anxiety. I'm not even the same person I was five months ago, much less five years ago. Or ten. In the last couple months, things have changed. The health issues apparently have an inexpensive fix. (Which I'm currently doing.) I got a neat new (better paying, less stressful) job, which gives me a lot of walking so I can get more exercise. (10,000 steps a day is commonplace now.) I’m on bupropion, which has helped me manage that anxiety so much better that panic attacks haven’t happened since, and I’m finally thinking clearly again for the first time in a long time. Which made me realize that I can never re-obtain what I was going for in the past. I need to start anew. So with the new year upon us soon, all previous unfinished stuff is done. Projects will be hard rebooted or completely changed. I'm taking this as a new opportunity, to re-establish myself as a comic creator. So right now, I have projects in mind that I want to do. But the immediate one I’m working on it what I call my “smutty monster-mystery” book. (Currently untitled.) Meant for (im)mature audiences, a little fun mystery story with sex, monsters, murder and dumb jokes. It’ll be a B&W comic, meant to evoke the feelings of those old Carter Brown Mystery novels. More on this soon. I’ll probably make a (new) Patreon for this. But that’s a 2023 issue. Right now, I’m just gonna spend the rest of this year script writing and drawing various stupid stuff.

These are concept arts for a B&W graphic novel I’m working on. Untitled at present. It's about a young demigod, in a cursed harbor town dealing with monsters, murder & mysteries.

Style-wise, It's going to be an R-rated book based on the old pulp novels like the Carter Brown Mysteries. You know the type: Pretty sexy girl on the cover with some blurb about danger or steamy adventures awaiting them.

Right now, I’m doing the one. If it does well, I'll do more. It's B&W because it's quick, dirty & cheap to produce. Emphasis on "dirty & cheap". While not porn, there'll be plenty of steamy sex, creepy murder, slimy monsters, dark mysteries and stupid jokes.

It's NOT high art. It's just a stupid fun guilty pleasure book. And honestly after the last several months I’ve had… I need a low key, fun project like this.

Transformers Zodiac: 01

Hey, long time, no see. Thought I’d post a Transformers fancomic series that i’ve been doing here for a bit. Transformers Zodiac, based primarily on the Diaclone characters. (With a few others thrown in for good measure.) It’s in it’s own universe that’s a mixture of various continuities. (Think like a mixture of the Prime Wars Trilogy and with a Post-G2 universe.) But for now, this is first story. I’m working on the follow up with Deep Cover & Clampdown now. I hope you like it.

Ghost-Spider here was meant as a companion piece for the Cassandra Cain picture, but I decided to color it at the last moment. Colored entirely in Clip Studio Paint, because I wanted to shake myself free of my “coloring habits” of Photoshop and try something new.

The Misfit vs King Shark was a commission, which I thought was fun and decided to include into the series. And the newer one here... The idea and premise is that now she’s running across the new universe now, with a list of lost powered children and the help of a mysterious online benefactor, she travels the globe looking for these kids to return them home.

It’s Misfit Appreciation day. A fun little day, created by my favorite Happy Sorceress where we have some fun and draw up fanart and the like for the DC character Charlie Gage-Radcliff, AKA Misfit, the fun and happy teleporting girl created by Gail Simone and Nicola Scott. Previous years, I’ve been posting era-themed covers for it, starting in the 1940s and working my way up to modern day. The idea here is that when the Flashpoint happened, and the DC Universe was shifting into it’s current incarnation, Misfit was teleporting (or bouncing) at the exact same time, and ended up getting hurtled through space and time, as seen in Cover #1. So she’s been attempting to bounce her way back home, decade by decade. And last year, I finished it up! 9 covers! So here’s a repeat of those covers... And then next, I’ll post the new ones!

It's not summer anymore, but I still had a few of these I wanted to do before I had to do the commission run. (I still have four to go with those and I can get back to the comic!) So this time around, I thought it'd be nice to check in on our old antagonist from Shadowgirls, Mistletoe Snow. I've had a story in mind for her for the past year I've been wanting to tell and I'm hoping that after Stargazer Apogee's first book wraps up... I'll get that chance. Since the Nightjar comic is gonna be handled a little differently than a typical ongoing, she'll get her own project. (Though she'll be popping up as a cameo in Stargazer Apogee soon in the most unexpected of all places!) Yeah, I know it sounds like I'm getting in over my head with multiple books and stuff... But believe it or not, I actually have this pretty well planned out!
