complete ramble here but the most obnoxious part of "true crime" communities for me is the complete inability to imagine perpetrators as remotely human, or to imagine they had remotely human motives. that is NOT to say their actions or motives are acceptable, reasonable, or worthy of sympathy. but if you pretend that every criminal, even the most violent and sadistic, is some unimaginable monster, you will completely fail to recognize any criminal that doesn't fit that mold

like, i'm listening to a podcast about munchausen by proxy, and the host is a woman whose sister is a likely perpetrator. in s1 she interviews a woman who went to prison for this abuse. she has immense empathy for this woman; not sympathy, mind you, cause she hurt her kids so much, but she can recognize what drove this behavior. maybe it's bc i'm like 10% derangement away from being munchausen myself but it makes perfect sense to me– everyone loves the sick girl, and everyone loves the mom of the sick kid. the praise, love, admiration, care, and attention you receive in either of those roles is overwhelming; i completely understand wanting it. i would never hurt my child to get those things, but i understand why someone would. no excuse, but it's comprehensible

meanwhile i got recommended a subreddit focusing on the case of an english nicu nurse accused of killing/sickening babies in her care, and was found guilty. now, from all i've read, she is def guilty. yet, since she's young, white, pretty, seems "normal", people doubt that guilt. and importantly, a large amount of that doubt seems to come from "i can't imagine how anyone would do that" well, they do. she did. people do unbelievable violence every single day, and you need to come to terms w that, and understand why it happens, or you are just another clown susceptible to obvious propaganda. "she must be a malignant narcissist" you are not a psychologist you are a redditor. sometimes the criminal isn't albert fish, it's the girl in your salsa class

just like all those "protect yourself from trafficking" tips w ZERO context as to WHO typically gets trafficked and WHY. you're a middle class white woman w a large support system, brittany. no one is stealing you from the target parking lot. meanwhile undocumented girls, poor girls, vulnerable girls, they are coerced and manipulated and abducted BECAUSE no one will look for them. and if you don't understand that, you're another paranoid moron and you are not better than the "normies" not listening to some other stupid podcast sponsored by hello fresh where the hosts mispronounce the names of non-white victims

the carnival being explicitly based on some half-remembered version of "masque of the red death" that fucks severely

silna doesn't get exiled (i can understand what is sus about the book ending but i like that silna is alive and respected)

the agonizingly long descriptions that portray the agonizingly long journey they all took, including the exhaustion, deprivation, illness, delirium, and desperation

goodsir refusing to cut up gibson!! he does not contribute to the cannibalism he explicitly refuses even upon mutilation, and his fucked up diary entry after he poisoned himself was busted in a good way

truly nothing about house md prepares you for wilson. he's fucking insane. he's been divorced three times. he's the only person who can scheme just as well as house. he gives a patient his own liver bc he felt bad for him - a patient who didn't even know wilson's name. btw. he noticed a patient had depression bc he never mentioned his grandkids. he starred in a porno. he dosed house with antidepressants for several weeks. he allowed his boybestie and his gf to share custody of him and didn't even try to stop it. house told him to buy a piece of furniture that represented who he was, and he bought a $4000+ organ for house. he was gonna torpedo his career to talk abt euthanasia bc one of his patients suffered longer than he had to. he let house move into his 1 bed apartment bc his therapist thought it'd be a good idea. this man would do anything for anybody if they let him. he'd fucking quit his job to save a snail off the sidewalk. bro is not normal in the slightest
