Easy Ways to Celebrate Samhain
With October 31st just around the corner, you may be wondering: What are some easy ways to celebrate Samhain? Well here are 5!
Tumblr media
Digital Altar - Either create a temporary one or decorate an already existing altar. Digital altars are a great option for those low on energy or in the broom closet! You can use apps like Pinterest and tumblr or create sacred spaces in video games.
Take a Walk - Put on your comfy shoes and take an evening walk. Be mindful of yourself and your surroundings. Stay present and experience the now. Appreciate the beautiful fall colors before they leave come winter. If walking isn't accessible then try to make your way outside still or open a window if possible.
Divination - Another tradition of the Celts, divination was often done on the night of Samhain. Runes, Tarot, Tea leaves, however you like, do some divining! This one can be a little more energy intensive if you dig too deep so if you're trying to save your energy maybe hold back a bit.
New Year’s Resolutions - Samhain was the mark of the new year in the ancient Celtic calendar. Take this time to create a New Year’s resolution or to reaffirm your existing resolutions. Perhaps meditate on how you've changed since last October 31st.
Honor your Ancestors - This time of year is known in a few different cultures as a time to celebrate the lives of our deceased loved ones. Set out photos, watch videos, and leave out offerings for your ancestors! This could be close relatives that have passed or more distant relatives.
I encourage you to look deeper into the holiday's history if you plan on celebrating but this can at least get you started!
For more information on Samhain, you can check out my post where I talk about its history, traditions, and some modern Samhain stuff as well.

This is the night when the gateway between our world and the spirit world is thinnest. Tonight is a night to call out those who came before. Tonight I honor my ancestors. Spirits of my fathers and mothers, I call to you, and welcome you to join me for this night. You watch over me always, protecting and guiding me, and tonight I thank you. Your blood runs in my veins, your spirit is in my heart, your memories are in my soul.

I love this artwork, it belongs to @paperwitchco 🎃
Hi, witches.
Many people made comments similar to this: “cute, but pls remember that if you aren't native american, you shouldn't be calling smoke cleanses smudging! also, you shouldn't be using white sage because it's going extinct and native peoples need white sage in order to use it for their ceremonies !! witchcraft is a beautiful thing but we need to be respectful of other cultures whilst practicing it ”which makes me very sad, because as my first language is not English, for me it does not have a different meaning, so I did not realize that with this post I was disrespecting the native communities, I’m really sorry. Also, because of my allergies, I don't usually burn anything, but if you do, please do your research so as not to damage ecosystems. ♥️

Secular Celebrations - Yule
At the very end of the Gregorian calendar comes the winter solstice and Yule. Technically, this is the FIRST holiday on the Wheel, since Samhain is the boundary between the old year and the new. But since most of us have to follow the January to December schedule in our day-to-day lives, we’ll end with Yule.
The winter solstice is a time when we focus on hunkering down and staying warm. We look to the homestead, we take care of our families, and we make sure our communities are surviving the winter as comfortably as possible. This is one of the times that the Wild Hunt was said to ride, their presence indicated by howling winds and stormy nights when it wasn’t safe to venture out. All manner of entities personifying hunger and cold and death stalk the landscapes of winter mythology, so we fortify our homes however we can and indulge in a little midwinter revelry to keep ourselves going until the spring.
Decorate with pine bunting, pine cones, holly, mistletoe, snow symbols, fairy lights, electric candles, ribbons, streamers, local fauna active during winter, whatever you like. There are plenty of Christmas wreaths out there, so don’t be afraid to make a witchy one with a big old star in the middle. Make sure that any ACTUAL foliage is kept away from the pets, and of course, observe fire safety for any lights you put up. Way too many house fires are caused by electrical shorts in holiday lights, so be extra careful. Do NOT plug an extension cord into a power strip. And go easy on the plastic glitter. Anathema to some, I know, but the more of that we can keep out of the waste cycle and the water system, the less will end up in the oceans.
If you have a fireplace, you can burn a symbolic log “to drive the cold winter away.” Or, if you only have a cauldron or a burning bowl, you can find an outdoor space to burn some twigs and incense for the same purpose. Or you can light some candles with appropriately wintry scents. Or, if you can’t burn anything at all, an LED candle left alight overnight on the altar should do the trick. The whole idea is to symbolize keeping warmth in the home, keeping the dark and the cold at bay, and keeping the home fires literally burning for those who must be elsewhere. However you manage this is fine.
Spend time with your near-and-dear, if you can. Eat good food, drink good wine, and do cozy things. Share treasured memories, and tell stories. Fun fact: Yule and Christmas are another traditional time of year for ghost stories, so feel free to pull those out again. If there’s a family tradition of feasting and gift-giving, lean into it. There are a lot of Christian traditions from Christmas that have made their way into the secular sphere. Sure, they still have some religious associations, but I know plenty of atheists who still exchange presents because it’s FUN. You can also give gifts to others by contributing to charitable organizations, donating to clothing drives and food pantries, or through random acts of kindness to those who need it.
Charity and compassion should be emphasized during this time of year. I mean, you should be charitable and compassionate ALL year when you can manage it, that’s just common decency. But especially when it’s cold and people are feeling that lack of money or resources and we’re surrounded by all these super-capitalistic ad campaigns telling us that our love for others is worth only as much as the kitchen appliances and diamond jewelry we put under the tree….yeah, maybe bring something a little more altruistic to the table. It doesn’t have to be huge, it doesn’t have to be performative. Just look for those opportunities to help someone out or make their life a little easier. You’ll know them when you see them.
If you’re crafty, pull out those projects you’ve been saving for a rainy day. We often spend a lot of time cooped up in the house during cold weather, the more so in 2020 with the various lockdowns, so why not turn it into something productive? Fix something, create something new, work on that scarf you’ve been meaning to finish since last winter. Make a pinecone feeder for the local birds, or scatter some nuts and dried berries for any critters that happen to be out and about. Do winter crafts with your kids to keep them occupied, if they happen to get bored of watching Frozen 2 for the hundredth time this week. (Hey, I only have nieces and a nephew, but I’ve still heard the horror stories.)
Let me pause a moment to address the proverbial elephant in the room. And this MIGHT be dipping a toe into the religion pool, but it’s an issue that a lot of us face. Late December can be a tough time for witches who were raised Christian but are, for one reason or another, disconnected from the faith or the Church at present. There’s the constant symbolism in music and decorations all around, pressure from our friends and families, people gnashing their teeth about red coffee cups, and so on. And we’re not even going to talk about the annual arguments over who stole whose holidays. If you know me, you know exactly how salty I can get on the topic, and we don’t have time for that today. This is about finding ways to celebrate, not my personal rage over people who don’t understand the difference between conflation and syncretism, and can’t be arsed to read history that doesn’t come from-...
Ooooo deep cleansing breath. Come on, Bree, you promised. (-hiss- I LIED.)
ANYWAY. Yule is a time when it might be worth remembering literally anything positive that came out of your experience with Christianity. Some of us have it, some of us don’t, that’s purely a personal matter. Some of us miss the carols, okay? There can be a lot of nostalgia involved in the season that’s disconnected from whatever trauma or differences in belief led to that split. And if you want to pause and remember that fondly, that’s okay. I will fully confess to singing along to Christmas hymns on the radio in my car at top volume because that’s a big part of the season for me and always has been. Heck, I might even attend a service at the local Unitarian church. They’re nice and non-denominational and they focus much more on the meaning behind the season than any particular holiday. So if you feel the need for that fellowship, see if there’s a UU church near you, or a virtual service online. There’s nothing wrong with revisiting your roots.
Moving back into witchcraft territory, you can collect clean snow and icicles to melt for winter moon water. This isn’t really much different from moon water you’d make at any other time of year, but it’s another method of gathering the base material. Also, icicles are great for any water you’re setting aside for more aggressive or protective purposes. The fact that they look like hanging spears isn’t lost on me.
Check your household protections and see if anything needs shoring up. Like I said, I cast my wards every year at Samhain, but they always seem to need a bit of detail work by the time Yule rolls around. Or heck, you might find Yule a more appropriate time to perform that casting, or maybe you refresh your wards at every holiday, who knows. Whatever works for you, as long as you remember to do it at some point. Cleanse your thresholds and the corners of your home, at the very least, just for good measure. But don’t go sweeping anything out the door. That’s sweeping away your good luck for next year.
And speaking of New Year’s, if the year you’ve had has been particularly….well, like the year we’ve had, you can also burn the year in effigy and cleanse with incense for a fresh start. Just write it on a piece of paper and burn that S.O.B. in the cauldron. While you’re at it, you can symbolically burn lingering worries, bad habits, bad memories, and regrets with either candle flame or a burning bowl. And yes, that includes all those negative things you think about yourself that you wish would go away.
And finally, reflect on the year as a whole, with all the joys and lessons it’s brought you. What memories have you made? What has brought you joy? What do you regret? What have you learned? What skills have you developed and how will you use them? What improvements do you still wish to make? And what do you want to do with the coming year?
And around and around it goes….
Like I said at the beginning, this is by no means exhaustive. These are just some basic ideas to get you started. You can make your own celebrations and your own traditions as you, either by building off of existing ones or by creating something new. As long as it has meaning to you and marks the occasions you deem important in ways that are fun and festive, it’s all good. This is something I’d love to see more often as a discussion - personal traditions, things that are unique to families or particular regions or individual witches, all the places they intersect, and all the various ways that we celebrate ourselves and each other and our craft.

Yule 21- 23rd December Celebration
Yule is a celebration of rebirth and the renewing of the old. It is the start of the longer, lighter days as the lord of the sun arises from his sojourn with the Goddess. Here light becomes important as we use sympathetic magic to ensure the return of the Sun. The ancient Egyptians also watched and waited for the star Sirius to announce yet another birth, that of Horus as the son of Osiris from the womb of Isis at this time.
The yule log symbolizes the continuous of light and this ritual honors that tradition, Before performing this ritual, you might want to decorate your home with evergreens although mistletoe, which is sacred to both the Druids and Scandinavians, is still banned from christian churches as being unholy. For the purpose of this celebration, consider that the yule log is your altar. The celebration is designed for a group, but can be altered for solitary practice.
Wish Branch
You will need a wish branch to indicate your desires and wishes for the coming year. Prepare this before your attend the celebration. You can spray the branch with silver or gold paint, but do not forget to ask permission of the nature spirits before you do so.
You will need,.
Yule Incense
Ribbons and cords in various colors.
Small representations such as cake or Christmas tree decorations or children’s toys, of your most important aims and desires (you might use one item for each month: be as creative as you like) Small wrapped sweets tied with colored thread. Branch of your chosen sacred wood.
Method:
Light the incense, Mediate on coming year and what you would like to see happen, You might also include your wishes for your family & friends, or for your larger world. When you have decided on your intentions, choose decorations or toys appropriate to your wishes. Decorate the branch according to your own creativity, (This is an intensely personal object and will be used in the celebration.). Take the branch to the celebration.
Preparation of the Yule Log
So often nowadays there is nowhere to burn the Yule log properly but its quite in order to substitute this method. The prepared log can then be used year after year and, of course, becomes increasingly powerful. It should be done by the leaders of the group (or by yourself if your working alone) and strictly should be consecrated afresh each year with a simple prayer to the God & Goddess.
You will need,
Red & Green Candles (one candle for each member of the group, plus an extra one for the leader)
Suitable log larger enough to accommodate the candles.
Silver foil
Method
In the long bore a hole large enough  for each candle, plus two extra. Line each candle hole with silver foil or a metal cake cup for safety so that the yule log does not catch fire. (Alternatively, you could wrap the candle of each candle in silver foil.) As you do so, ask for a blessing from the God & Goddess for the work you do.
Now on to the fun part the celebration
You will need
Prepared Yule Log
2 White Candles.
Black Candle (To represent the God)
Prepared Red & Green Candles as above.
Groups wish branches
A Wreath (symbolic of the wheel of year and of the goddess)
Yule Incense
Method. Cast your circle, and light the incense. Place the yule log in a prominent position. Light the white candles at either end of the yule log. Place the God candle in front of the log and say
“Here this candle symbolize the Sun God, Its final flicker. His passing and here its flame once again lights His return.”
Light the god candle from one of the altar candles, The leader should then light their green candle and say
“Blessed be the Maiden Goddess, May this world be forever young in her presence”
From that candle a second is then lit, the worlds now used are
“Blessed be the mother goddess, fresh and rosy with babe. And so shall all that springs her be strong, adventures and bountiful.”
Then light a third candle from the second & say
“Blessed b e the deep-rooted Goddess, Wise, powerful and temperate, the keeper of wisdom, and the ever-turning wheel. “
Each member then steps up lights their candle from the last places in securely in the yule log.
Finally the leader lights a last candle to complete the ritual and while facing towards East says
“Tonight the lord of the sun is born again, The Goddess and the god are together in harmony. The Sun reaffirms as the wheel is turning once again, We praise the Goddess and the newly born  Gods, Our father and Mother.”
Now if liked each participant may talk about their wishes for the next year whilst placing their wish branch around the  Yule log, or in a larger vase nearby.
The ritual is now complete Many blessings to all and a Happy Yule tide :)
(If you like you may follow this by one of our full moon rituals. As we have a full moon this Winter Solstice)

My Yule Plans
Your Sabbat-ly reminder that this goblin bitch is actually a witchy goblin bitch.
So, I celebrate from around the 19th (aka today) to New Year because I tend to not have the energy at exactly the time I need it so I space out. Sometimes I start prepping even earlier but yee.
Bake some Cookies - for the family and my Deities.
My Grandma asked me to do a “what’s the next year gonna be like” rune reading for the family (or her? not sure) so imma prep for that and feel which deitie is gonna be best to ask for that. (Runes is the only type of diviniation she doesn’t know about so yee. She’s christian though)
Listen to and find as MANY Yule songs I like (so if u know any … eh? I already am completely in love with “Santa Clause is Pagan too”)
make a Yule Wreath out of burn-able stuff and burn it once I get to actually making a Yule Fire
Make a Yule Fire at some river/stream
Generally do more Runes
Write a Prayer to all three of my deities (one for each) for Yule
Make a Christmas Ornament with a Sigil/Rune for our Family collection
Make some christmas ornaments out of fresh oranges to invite the sun to come back
maybe bake a pie or fresh bread
more? who knows with me

Yule: Witch Balls
December 21st
Did you know about Witch Balls?
Witch Balls are a common Yule tradition where they get glass ball ornaments and fill it with herbs, flowers, crystals, etc. to bring in that specific property.
Traditionally, they’re kept on a windowsill or buried for a specific reason like abundance or protection. But you can place them anywhere in the house to charge and release that energy.
You better bet that I’m making deity ornaments now :)

Tips for Discernment
Tumblr media
Discernment is a crucial skill for any magic worker. It’s how we separate the magic from the mundane, reality from our imagination, and reduce the risk of being deluded or manipulated. Everbody already naturally does this a little bit, but actively strengthening the skill can be difficult for a beginner. Here are some tips, tricks, and techniques that have helped me.
Write everything down. When doing a spell or working with a spirit, keep a written record of what you feel, say, witness, etc. This will help give you something objective to look back on later, which is a huge help for doing any post-research. You never know what details may give you a lead.
Pick a rule for “signs” and stick with it. What do you believe about coincidences? When do you believe something is a message from the Universe or your gods? Create a litmus test/threshhold for what you consider a sign; it doesn’t really matter what it is, so long as it’s consistently applied. That way, you’re saving your energy for the more important stuff instead of worrying/wondering about the small fry. On that note…
The “Rule of Three” (NOT to be confused with the Wiccan Rede.) This is a common discernment method for the concept above. One time seeing something is an instance, two is a coincidence, and three is a message.
When you ask for signs, be specific. Ask for something unique/specific enough that you wouldn’t reasonably expect it to happen anyway, but not so rare that it has no chance of manifesting. Color + Object (ex: let me see a purple feather) is a good method. That way you know exactly what your sign will be.
The Gut Test. Sometimes when I’m communicating a spirit and I feel like something’s off, I’ll take a moment in my head and think, “this isn’t real. I’m making this conversation up.” Listen to how your gut responds. Does it agree right away? Does saying that feel incorrect, like it’s truly legitimate? Was the conversation legitimate up to a certain point? Listen to your gut and act accordingly.
The Mimic Test. When working with spirits and “hearing” a voice in your head, try to recreate it with your own inner mind voice. Can you get it to be the same voice? Same volume? If you can, then you’re probably safe writing it off as your imagination.
PRACTICE. Practice. Practice. Practice feeling the energy of your plants. Practice feeling your own energy. Describe it in detail. Practice feeling the energy of any ritual objects. Practice communicating with a spirit you trust, like a guide or Ancestors. Just like a muscle, discernment becomes stronger with repeated use and withers when ignored. Practice on little things to keep you sharp for the big stuff.
Don’t Beat Yourself Up. It’s understandably a little embarrassing to admit we were wrong about something. And that’s okay! Pobody’s Nerfect! Recognizing our discernment mistakes makes us stronger practitioners, because it means you’re critically thinking about what you’re doing and striving to improve. At worst, a practitioner who never admits a lapse in discernment is actually missing that chance for growth, and runs a very high risk of being taken down a flight of fancy and getting increasingly disconnected from the real world. So be kind to yourself! Growing is good.

When Your Spell Fails
no witch succeeds with their spells 100% of the time. here’s a short list of reasons why it could have happened and some solutions
Tumblr media
possible reasons why:
distraction - a spell you’re not invested in isn’t going to have much power behind it. if you’re concentrated more on you. if you cast a motivation spell while planning out your vacation, it’s going to subtract from that motivation.
rosemary replaces everything - supposedly. it supplies general power, but if you add nothing into the spell that has any real meaning to you, then what is that power supposed to do? where does that energy go with no direction?
associations - the correspondences everyone else lists for herbs and stones and planets can be very useful, but sometimes you have a personal conflicting association. perhaps lavender is gross to you, and not peaceful at all. then that dream sachet isn’t going to give you peaceful dreams.
didn’t help the spell - magic does not exist in a vaccum. spells can only do so much, but if you don’t make the effort, it much less likely to work. job spells dont work if you don’t fill out applications, love spells don’t work if you don’t go out and talk to people, and so on.
too many cooks - if you cast 10 love spells, and yet no one is attracted to you, it’s entirely possible they all did work but they all conflicted with each other, and ended up canceling each other out.
shot for the stars- sometimes you try to achieve something, and you set your expectations too high. either it’s impossible, you’re trying from the wrong angle, or you didn’t get as much as you wanted.
cancellation - sometimes a spell may appear not to work when it does, but the results are invisible because it canceled something else out. say you cast a money spell and get no extra cash after several weeks, it could be just helping you maintain your current income and blocking extraneous expenses.
impatience - unless you programmed a working time limit into it, the spell could be working and you just don’t see the results yet. these things can take time.
out of your depth - if you don’t feel like you’re ready to do a spell, your lack of confidence or discomfort can either disable the spell or not give it enough power to work
what to do:
take a break, ground, cleanse, and give it time. refocus your intentions
contemplate each ingredient and step in the spell, and modify
use the ingredients that you know best work for you, old standards hold up.
think about what you could do to help the spell work. what mundane methods haven’t you tried?
take a step back and look at it realistically. is there another angle you can approach this from, can you break it down into smaller steps?
return to the spells you are comfortable doing, and work from there.

The sabbats are holidays celebrated throughout the year on solstices, equinoxes, and the midpoints between them. These sabbats form the Wheel of the year.
There is a controversy surrounding the dates of these holidays, as people celebrate them all over the earth, not only in the northen hemisphere but in the southern too.
One viewpoint is that the Sabbats should be celebrated as they were originally created to be… in other words, Samhain is October 31st, regardless of where you live. In the Southern Hemisphere, even though you are just gearing up to summer on October 31st, this perspective says that you celebrate the cleansing and releasing, the honouring of the dead just as you would if you lived in the Northern Hemisphere. The other viewpoint (the one I personally agree with) is that you should celebrate when you feel like the season corresponds with the holiday, in other words, your craft, your rules. So if you live in the southern hemisphere, you have the choice.
I’ll be writing the dates for each holiday starting with the northen hemisphere and then the dates that many people celebrate them in the southern hemisphere

Ring Magick

Rings have always been used in magick, whether as a form of talisman, amulet, or enhancement in your magick.
One’s hands both have different meanings and attributes, they are not identical nor are they twins, they are sister and work with each other like yin and yang.
Metals also have a large influence on how the energy flowing from your hands are directed, especially when it comes to your intention.
