Hello, my name is Jessica Stork – James and the current course I am on at New College Nottingham is Level two UAL Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology. Next year I am still looking to go to college and continue my studies and progress in that certain field of education, I have always loved the idealisation of going college studying a subject I personally love and I know I will do love and enjoy working on, and I am planning to go to level three TV and Film. Hopefully I shall have a job by then to continue college studies. I would love to work in retail as a customer assistant.

The work that I have sent you today is within the course of TV and Film and it is a short movie that is related to the genre of drama, it’s about secrets. Out of all the course subjects I am learning and enjoying I am confident enough to say that TV and Film is the best course for me. This course lets me use my imagination and creativity skills to create projects that allow me to express myself and shows my true personality and allow people who sees my projects to enjoy them as well. The piece that I am presenting  to you today, is one of the best pieces of work I have done this whole year, this is because I have put my heart and soul into this project and it really highlights my beginners talent and what could become of it if I progressed this study into the future. All my life, I have been an introvert and I feel that my childhood and schooling through the years shall aid me in what I would love to do as a successful career choice. Thankyou!

Evaluation

Our task that we were given to complete was to create a piece of work that relates to magic, what we were meant to do was take all the skills we have learnt this year and use those skills to create an independent film (in my case).

Intro

At first, I chose to produce a music video about magic especially the magic of friendship, but because of the corona virus it has come clear to me that it’s more practical for me to do a documentary short film about magic. My brainstorms have helped a lot as they have helped me to think of a better way to add in what I need to make my video seem better, helped to think of newer and better ideas for the project. My initial research was to look online to get some background information on magic and the schedule I have been filling out has helped me to keep me organised and helps me to make my life a lot easier. The proposal is accurate with what I have been creating for my FMP, it checks all the stuff I have for my last project for this year and I have use the correct terminology in order to make the proposal neater and in finer detail.

Research

All research was helpful as it all helped towards my final grade, first off, my primary research helped me to get a sense of what the audience wanted of me. Secondary research helped me to get a better understanding of what I could say in the documentary. To be honest, the timing of the corona virus did not help us whatsoever, that is the only thing I did not find helpful with anything. The two types of research we did was ‘Primary research’ and ‘Secondary research’, primary research is when you find out what you need independently such as making surveys. Secondary research is when you rely on others research such as finding out information online. This has impacted my work as it will go towards my final grade in creative media, helping me towards better understanding of key terminology of tv and film productions, such as: genres, sub-genres, demographic, psychographic, etc.

Audience

My target audience is now directed at teenagers and all years above as it is a documentary and documentaries are sometimes unpopular for mainstream media. The content in this short film is about all things magic, for instance, witches and the dark ages and middle ages, etc. The demographic profile of the audience is targeted towards both male and female, as I’ve said from teenagers and upwards, this short documentary is for any status person, student, worker, The psychographic profile of the audience is for people who are interested in learning new facts and like talking programmes such as talk radio, people who love history as well, as this is all about the history of magic, it’s origins. I did all this by creating a survey and seeing what the audience’s responses were. I feel the part that appeals to the audience mostly is that there is a range of things to talk about and it can bring up some interesting conversations that most people wouldn’t really think about talking about. I feel passionate about this project, because it relates to my childhood so much, I grew up with Disney movies and going to the circus every year and reading fiction books that

Production

I produced my work by doing the theory work on my laptop and the practical work was produced on my phone. I used an editing app on my phone which helped me to add transformation and text and was meant to help add background music.  My pre-production planning was simple, doing the treatment, location recreation sheets, health and safety sheets, lastly, practising camera shots for the real production. As I don’t have much equipment I would use at college, I had to use what I could such as, my camera on my phone and using laptop for communicating with college tutors and sending emails to Faye. This meant that my work was impacted on this majorly because I have not had the absolute equipment to use for this project, but I did it. The media techniques I had used for this was the camera holding and the shots with it, that’s mainly the techniques I used to help me. I’d say that this project made me realise that I need to be better with timing and getting work and everything done on time. It has improved my mentality in some ways as it has made me want to do things differently for the better. I feel in the future, these skills will progress, and I will become more resilient in adulthood and be better at working.

Reflection

I feel that I could have done a lot better with the overall project, but I did what I could with what was going on throughout this strange time. Elephant in the room: the part that made this project more complex is the timing of everything that’s gone off really. I overcame this by getting through it and carried on with the task at hand. If I could restart the project I would, make sure that I did the work independently new, exciting, but very challenging because the work, your final grade, it all up to how you work and how you saw your plans through. I kept to my schedule which was helpful as it helped me to keep everything in my college life under control and  my proposal I made a few slight changes from it because I thought of things that could go better for the final project. All together they both worked extremely well, and hopefully got my work a better grade. Unfortunately, I don’t feel I have chosen the times wisely, but it is one of the many skills I shall learn to be better at later, for level 3 tv and film. Writing my evaluation, has been one part of the project that I have put all my effort into though, to make sure it has the best outcome. My final piece, I think it has been presented in a good way, not the best way I could make it, nonetheless a good way.

Treatment

Documentary: Magic 

I will be talking about magic and the history behind magic as well such as supernatural entities, magic through the years and Disney. It might be a bit longer than I thought it would be, but, I suspect it will take up to no longer than 10 minutes. I will be discussing magic and how it came to be, and mainly the intentions behind it too. 

Going through time within 10 minutes and learning new people who we have never heard of before, learning new facts we’ve never knew before and learning much more.

Reflective Journal - week four

This week I have been uploading photos relating to our FMP. Such as fashion wear for the music video I want to try and create. The history behind music videos and music in general. 

Now, I am filling you in on what I have been doing this week, obviously because of these strange times there is not much to do at the moment but trying to keep myself sane and healthy. Watching A LOT of movies and YouTube videos. Also, I have done productive things for my FMP as well mainly going through my blog seeing if I need to improve on anything or need to finish off some unfinished work. Hope everyone who is reading this are doing ok, keeping safe, healthy, and staying in contact with friends and family.

history of magic

What is magic? 

Magic is all sorts of enchantment, for example: magic tricks, new inventions, new discoveries, etc. Magic started out in the ancient Egyptian times starting from  2700 BC. A an called Dedi would perform the magic of conjuring effect. In 1300 - 650 BC it lead up to the ancient Greeks, believing in the gods such as Zeus, Hades, etc and monsters such as Medusa, centaurs as well. Moving on to 50 - 300 AD we are introduced to the new magic which is called ‘Cups and Balls’. The trick was simply using stones and small vinegar bowls/ cups. Continuing to 400 - 1000 AD where the dark ages come into place, something which is about mystical, supernatural or magical powers practice. Also, the start of magic theatre to possess the magic and wonder inside people. 

1000 - 1500 was stumbling right into the middle ages, people associating with witchcraft. In 1584 a man named Reginald Scot became the founder and was named as the ‘Discovery of witchcraft’. Finally, in 1805 a man named Jean Eugene Robert - Haudin known as the ‘Father of Modern Magic’ unfortunately died in 1871. 

Magic is not only explored by using magic spells, magic can be exploited by Images and Tv, for example: Harry Potter is the most relatable movie in the world that's tied to magic and the production of all seven films highlight all elements of magic within magic. Also, another good example is ‘Cinderella’, the whole movie teaches children to follow your heart and everyone has magic inside themselves, just hold on to kindness, courage and a little bit of magic.

This is the sort of fashion I am trying to go for with my music video. Examples of sort of clothing is like clothing from stranger things or even clothing from ‘Riverdale’. They both keep the same sort of era as they are both very vintage and like what the clothing used to be from the 80s and 90s were, vintage clothing is coming back in trend slowly but surely. This sort of fashion I feel really suits my friends fashion and bringing back fashion and music from those eras would be awesome but inspiring to some people.

Locations:

The places I would like to film this music video are places which are old fashioned and highlights a vintage style, such as graffiti art, etc. 

There is one specific place I would really love to film my music video, which fits my idea and vision of what I want to create. 

Another place that I have been pondering about is the lace market where the rainbow path/ road is. Still keeping the vintage part alive. 

Also there are side streets near the lace market streets that I think could go well with the music video production.  

PS: The reason why I have not posted any pictures of these locations is mainly because I have forgotten the street name which is typical for one Jessica Stork James. Another is because of the first reason I will not add any pictures that are not the exact location. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Reflective Journal - week three

OK. For week three I have produced a text about these locations and what my ideas and visions are with these locations. As I have mentioned on my other post, the reason for not having any pictures of these locations is simply because I have forgotten the street name, but I know what the street looks like and I know where is it, that to me is more important. If we ever get out of isolation/ lock down I shall take pictures to give evidential proof of where I’ve filmed this production.

Reflective Journal - week two

For week two of my FMP I have been working on my proposal for what I shall be doing for my FMP and I have also created a survey on survey monkey for my class mates to answer although at the start my Facebook account had some difficulties going on, but, now I can successfully get on the L2 group chat. Anyway, as I was saying I have filled out a survey monkey to help me be able to make the music video in the style that my classmates or any audience enjoy it as. I feel that it is more important that the audience enjoy the music video As much as the producers like it.

Reflective Journal -week one

Obviously because of the corona virus things have been changed A LOT, anyway, in week one I had created my mind maps, thirst one is ideas about what I want to do for my FMP and themes that I want to incorporate in this project as well. Second mind map is about different songs that I could use as this will be a music video. Lastly, the third mind map is about the different kind of shots I shall be using and key terms that I should remember from our first lesson, this will help to put my FMP all into place.

Proposal

For our Final Major Project, we need to meet the criteria which is, creating a piece of work which resembles the topic of ‘Magic’. I’ve chosen to do TV and Film as my core FMP as I feel I am more confident in this subject and I have a lot of ideas that could go well with this subject. For my FMP I am going to be creating a music video about my friends from college, it is mainly about our friendship but we are going to try and incorporate some magic within in the lyrics, if this is not possible and we do not succeed we shall do a cover of a song that is about magic. So far, I have researched some songs about magic. All the songs I have matched with the theme are on my tumblr page.

The reason for why I want to do a music video is because I have a love for music and me and my friends from college have a wonderful friendship and I feel that most people in the world can relate and that’s what makes a song so successful. People love songs that they can relate to and this is what I want for me and my friends and for the world.

To create this, I shall obviously need to use a video camera and most likely a tripod to stand the camera on. Also, I need to use good lighting such as blunt, harsh, soft, etc this will create effect and set the mood. As I said in my evaluation from my short film, I wanted to add a variety of shots and I am going to stick with that and hopefully it will look like I have improved on what I have been tasked with doing. I will also add diegetic sounds to the video as the non-diegetic sounds don’t add that much effect with this type of video.

My location for this will be within Nottingham but in want the style of the music video to seem retro and within the 80s and 90s vibe. But if the situation that we are in so far has not been cleared then I shall have to come up with a backup plan, I was thinking that ‘Plan B’ will have to be done over face time and we will need to set up a date for recordings, etc.

Notice: editing will have to wait till I get back to college, but once editing I shall add special effects such as glitter flying, magical transitions and much more.
