okay im definitely doing a turned-into-a-cat au with childermass but what if there’s an au of that au and is somewhat also an au of childermass-doesn’t-know-he’s-beautiful-immortal except that in this version he’s actually part faerie and he does know it but has conveniently not mentioned it because norrell

so then when a bit of magic gone wrong turns childermass into a cat norrell’s obviously like, he can’t very well have people knowing that his servant has been transformed into a cat. as far as the public is made aware childermass is simply away at present and norrell has acquired a perfectly normal cat

but that’s a problem because he can’t address his perfectly normal cat as childermass and make it seem like he has a cat named after his servant, but he supposes he must call the creature something because after all there are people (lascelles & drawlight) who will want to know the cat’s name

but before norrell can call him anything, some genius decides that faerie is a fine name for a cat so then drawlight or someone addresses the cat as faerie and he actually responds and norrell’s like childermass you make things very difficult could you not have waited for a more respectable name

and it’s like he’s now stuck calling him faerie because cat!childermass thinks that really is his name

but then childermass gets un-cat-ified (and dog-ified and raven-ified but that’s another matter entirely) and it turns out cat!childermass knew perfectly well faerie wasn’t his name but responded to it because he i,s in fact, part heckin faerie and norrell’s just. so done. he’s done.

strange is of course very impressed

#i feel like in this au strange accidentally turns childermass into a cat #so ofc they're trying to figure out how to turn him back #but the first attempt turns him into a raven and norrell's like no nope absolutely not i refuse #and lascelles is like hmm i haven't seen faerie in some time #and drawlight's squirming over to one side bc he and cat!childermass had a bit of a run-in he isn't sure of the result of #and while norrell's trying to decide what to say strange is like ''yes it's very tragic i'm afraid Faerie died'' #he isn't 100% sure why Drawlight makes That Face when he says it #but then they're like alright well what's up with the bird and strange is like that is a magician's bird #well what's the bird's name #''..............Faerie'' #and they're all like well that's a bit macabre but on brand i guess #and then strange tries to turn him back properly but accidentally turns him into this moderately terrifying shaggy black dog #and he's like ''well i've got the look of him right at least'' *dog barks* ''hmmm and his accent too i believe'' #and lascelles and drawlight are like ''what's happened to the bird'' ''would you believe??? he flew away!'' #''alright what's the dog's name'' ''........................faerie'' #everyone just loses it smh

Okay hi new friends first of all THANK YOU so much for responding to my post about JSMN, it’s been my favourite for a long time but for some reason just recently did I go tumbling head over heels into fandom obsession and if I have to reginight this dormant fandom I’ll need your help so thanks again!!

people who know the characters better than i do: if the JS&MN characters were blends of tea, what do you suppose they might be, and how might they be served as far as, with/without cream, sugar, any particular instructions?

#Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell #jsmn #js&mn #i don't know for sure but i can imagine Childermass as a bit of a smoky blend? #and Strange as something with a hint of spice #ThistledownDude maybe a little smokiness but mostly a bite of mint #Norrell could be...oof maybe chamomile with lemon and honey? #a Segundus tea would of course be wonderful and idek what it would be just that it would be really good

omg can you imagine the terror of living with chaotic vinculus after that though? Vinculus wondering if you really can die, if he should check, how mad you'd be if he accidentally really killed you -- or worse, if he checked and you survived... And segundus following him around like a little shoulder angel all the time: "No, Vinculus, you can't drop a brick on him." "Put the knife away, Vinculus." "You'll regret it either way, Vinculus..."

bahaha, Vinculus, grabbing a knife “i could find out for you, right now, no charge” Childermass and Segundus, at the same time: “let’s not find out”

later, Childermass grumbling that this new venture was enough of a task without the Book trying to kill him, someone helpfully chimes in that, technically Vinculus is trying specifically to not kill him.

i thought myself content with my little list of three or four plot ideas or so but then i saw a prompt about a character being immortal without knowing it and now i keep thinking about Childermass either coming into  immortality by some circumstance or having it by virtue of relation to The Raven King but not knowing it so,

he’s got this whole stack of weird incidents he’s somehow survived relatively unscathed, nevermind being shot by lady pole, but being Childermass he just kind of goes with it. everyone assumes he’s just really lucky.

it probably doesn’t even affect much of anything until the post-series adventures anyway but i’m just thinking about potential for Antics

i’m assuming Norrell and Strange had plenty of time to talk in The Darkness so i rather fancy the idea that one of those Conversations might have been the whole, “soooo....Childermass is a Magician...” discussion and a half
