hi all,
i hate to be doing this while i've got a request in progress, but with the amount of cleaning i've been doing recently i've hurt my wrist quite badly.
my doctor has said i need to minimise things such as drawing and switch to using my non-dominant hand where possible to let my wrist recover for a few weeks and as such i won't be posting for a little while.
apologies for those with ongoing requests at the moment, i'll be back as soon as i can!

a completed blue lock tattoo!
this commission was the first i'd ever done for a tattoo and i couldn't be happier for how much they liked it! we tweaked this manga panel to make sure there were no sharp edges and made a few edits here and there. thank you again for allowing me to help with this design!
thanks to @campbygambino for letting me share the pictures of the tattoo!

im pretty sure u already answered smth like this before but i didnt really get it 😭 but how do u guys turn the screentone (dots) into grey (smooth) like in reo mikages panels for example. i have a really hard time cleaning those up cause of the lines in the hair and was wondering if there was an easier way to do it. thank u for all these clean panels by the way!!!
hi anon, the long story short is that i draw over the half-tone to create a layer of solid colour! a lot of it comes from practice as half-tones are normally used for shading, so as long as you use a darker colour for the half-tones it'll look okay!
i'll use one of the reo mikage panels for an example. i start with removing the background by erasing it, so i have this to work with:
Tumblr media
zooming in on the hair, this is what it looks like:
Tumblr media
as you can see, the half-tones and the thin black lines make this awkward to clean. so my solution: ignore them! i pick a colour roughly the same shade (you can use a blend tool if you want to get it as close as possible) and use the bottom layer with the panel as a guideline of where to draw the new region. i always do this on a new layer to make all the other sections easier later on.
Tumblr media
then, repeat this for the other half-tones. if you keep each shade of grey on its own layer, you only need to be neat around the edges by hiding parts underneath what you've already cleaned. i most use this just to save time:
Tumblr media
as for the black lines on top of the half-tones, you can either continue using a previous shade of grey, or make it a little darker for more shadows, but again i recommend just drawing over these. if you were to try and keep these lines in the panel would look messy in my opinion.
i also picked a darker grey for the shading on the face rather than cleaning around the black lines:
Tumblr media
finally, i replace the original panel at the bottom with a solid layer of black:
Tumblr media
the final panel then looks like this:
Tumblr media
this is just much simpler than cleaning around half-tones and the more cleaning you do the easier it will become for you to grasp where to cover black lines for shading, and where to leave some in. i will sometimes leave a few as a lead-up into a shaded area. for example, leaving a few darker lines in on jason's neck here makes it look closer to the manga's original art style:
Tumblr media
the most crucial part of using this method to remember to keep every new shade of grey on separate layers!
hope this helps!
also for future reference, all posts of this kind are tagged with "cleaning help" and are linked on our "about" page!

im sorry if you've been asked this before but, how do you remove the background from the manga cap? whenever i save as transparent png (on ibis paint), the skin of the character also becomes transparent. thank you, and thank you for all your hard work!!
hi anon! when i save my caps after cleaning i have to make sure that there is no background, so it looks like this:
Tumblr media
you can see that the "background" looks checkered, this automatically exports the file for me in the way i want it to in clip studio paint.
i had a read of exporting files from ibis paint, there seems to be two ways of exporting: exporting a layer as png and exporting a canvas as png
it seems that if you export a layer you will only get the outline, like this, which sounds like the issue you're having? link
Tumblr media
i think what you may be looking for is "save as transparent png" instead: link
Tumblr media
sorry i don't have any experience in ibis paint myself so this would be my best guess!

hey there! i really admire the effort put in all ur work ;;
id really love to learn to clean mangas, ive only removed some text bubbles from some panels (without having to draw over them) and i was wondering if I could possibly be good at manga cleaning, cus i cannot draw(/srs) and ive been using the gallery app because idh access to resources like ibispaint :(
what do u think?
- eager to learn 🦅
hi anon!
i don't see why not! my most used tool in clip studio paint is the curved line tool when i clean, which i've learned to use bc i cannot draw a single line without it looking "sketched", like this:
Tumblr media
it's something my art teaches hated me doing at school, and i can tell you it's a terrible technique for cleaning manga, so yes you can clean manga and be bad at drawing haha
my advice is just to give it a go! and don't feel disheartened when the first panels you clean are not ones you like, looking back i've had the earge to re-clean some of my first panels so so bad but i think they're important to keep track of progress ^^
have a look at krita too! it's the software i started out on, and it's completely free to use - copy and paste a panel, put some music on and see what happens!
i'm always here if you'd like any advice <3
