Of Ice, Buckets, and Attention Whores

First of all, let's discuss what it's all about. The Ice Bucket is a trend to help spread awareness about ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. It's either donate to the cause or do the challenge. The reason the challenge is to pour a bucket of ice on yourself is because it gives you that paralyzing feeling that victims of the disease feel. 

First point of this note: I find it annoying that people are accusing those who do the challenge of just wanting attention. Yes, yes. A lot of attention whores have been doing it just because it's a trend. But guess what, that's the whole point of this: attention.

  Yes, it would be better if all who did the challenge actually knows why this challenge exists. However, even if those who did them didn't know the true cause of it, at least some of the people who watch those videos would be curious as to why this trend exists. Some of them will do the research and, boom: awareness. So as long as people do the challenge, there will be people that will do the research, and maybe help spread awareness further or donate to the cause.

  Second point of this note: I also find it annoying that people are pestering all those who do the challenge to donate. "Don't nominate if you don't donate," as some would say. For celebrities, this would probably be a good policy since they have the resources to donate and spread the word at a grander scale.

  If you average folk did the challenge AND donated, good for you. However, the point of all this is that if you can't donate, do the challenge. This is so that if you don't have the money, at least you raised awareness. Let's admit, not all of us have the extra money to spare.

  These self-righteous people who have taken upon themselves to impose these "rules" on this trend are actually hindering others out there from doing the challenge. People have become afraid of being called attention whores or being called out for not donating after doing the challenge.

  You know what, don't stop them. Pour those buckets. Be an attention whore, because that's what it's all been about: attention.
