so many words about historical men's corsetry
(This got way too long to send via Discord -- Dangimace in the Renegade Bindery server asked about men's corset sewing/resource recs so here is my half-assed and non-exhaustive rundown. Most of my historical sewing is focused on fashions of the UK, US, and Europe for the second half of the 18th century and first half of the 19th century, so that bias is reflected here; also disclaimer overall that "menswear"/"womenswear" are socially constructed categories and real people's bodies have always looked a wider variety of ways than fashion and other social forces would dictate. I sew historical garments with enthusiastic disregard for the historical gender binary and I'm barrel-chested, thick-waisted, and narrow-hipped no matter what I'm wearing.)
Onward, lads!
Tumblr media
Ok wrt men's corsetry: there's a whole lot of fogginess around how historical men's corsets were constructed for a bunch of annoying reasons but that means there's lots of possibilities to explore in pattern drafting and project planning. Stays and other stiffened body-shaping garments have a whole complex conceptual relationship to the body basically as soon as they start appearing. 16th and 17th century garments do a whole lot of shaping (both compressing and building up) for men and women alike, but things really kick off in the 18th century in terms of the symbolic weight placed on stays and (later) corsets. Whole lot of stuff about gender, social class, race, fatness, morality, etc. getting projected onto these garments. So I'm a little leery about people taking obviously satirical illustrations of fashion-victim dandies or Gross Corpulent Libertines getting laced into corsets as truthful and indicative of the way men were really dressing -- scurrilous gossip and exaggeration are both a pain to sift through if we want to know which men wore corsets, what kind, and why.
In the very late 18th/early 19th century corsets were part of the repertoire for achieving highly fashionable shapes in menswear. (Along with a whole lot of padding.) They weren't mandatory for all dudes, but for fashion-forward dandies and equally fashion-forward military men, male corsets/stays were definitely a thing. The whole Romantic-era pigeon-breasted, narrow-waisted silhouette can be emulated by shapewear worn beneath the clothes, pads in the garments themselves, or both; in addition to waist reduction it helped to maintain smooth visual lines underneath close-fitting garments.
Tumblr media
(look at these minxy 1830s dudes and their tiny waists)
As the century goes on the desired menswear silhouette becomes boxier and less fitted, and male corsetry recedes into the background; we start to see patents and advertisements for men's corsetry, so they still seem to have been worn, but there's a lot more language around vigorous manly athleticism and supporting the structures of the body. It can be hard to tell whether a particular piece is intended to be worn primarily for some medical purpose or for its perceived aesthetic benefits. This is giving me such flashbacks to trying to find post-surgical compression garments.
(Side note: there's also a vigorous tradition of fetishist writing about corsetry all through the 19th century, in fairly mainstream channels, which is fascinating. Due to the relatively private and deeply horny nature of fetish tightlacing we don't necessarily know as much about what those same letter-writers may have "really" worn at home, but I hope they were having fun.)
I've seen very few specifically men's corsetry patterns from historical pattern-makers-- not even really big names like Redthreaded. I sewed my 19thc menswear corsets from the men's underbust pattern in Laughing Moon Mercantile #113 which afaik is speculative rather than reproducing a specific historical garment, but it's not too different from the women's late-19th-century underbust patterns in the same pattern pack.

However, a lot of underbust and waist-cincher patterns from more general historical patternmakers could be made suitable with some minor alterations. Here I'd also rec books like Jill Salen's Corsets: Historical Patterns And Techniques and Norah Waugh's Corsets & Crinolines, though their focus is definitely on womenswear and you need to be relatively comfortable scaling up or drafting from pattern diagrams.
The structural features and desired results for a man's corset are pretty much the same as any other corset (back support, compression in some areas, etc.) even when the desired silhouette is different; commercially-created patterns are drafted with the expectation of certain bodily proportions so like with all corset-sewing it's important to make a mockup for fitting purposes. (I ended up liking one of my mockups so much I finished the process and made it a whole separate corset.) I don't know much about this area but I seem to see a lot more belt-and-buckle closures and criss-crossing straps in corsets designated as being for men -- this might be a byproduct of gendered differences in how people got dressed, but it might be nothing.
There's some weird and wonderful historical examples, both extant and in images -- I appreciated this post at Matsuzake Sewing, "A Brief Discussion Of Men's Stays", and its accompanying roundup of images on Pinterest though the tone wrt historical fetishwear corsets in the blog post is a little snippy. I really want to make a replica of Thomas Chew's 1810s corset (which you can read more about here at the USS Constitution Museum) but it incorporates stretch panels made with a shitload of metal springs and I'm not ready for all the trial and error trying to replicate that.
Tumblr media

There's a pretty rich vein of modern men's corset patterns which seem like they could be easily pattern-hacked for historical costuming purposes, like these with shoulder straps from Corsets By Caroline or DrobeStoreUpcycling's waist cincher which also looks like it could be altered pretty easily to cinch with straps and buckles like some 19thc men's corsetry does. This pattern for a boned chest binder in vest form by KennaSewLastCentury is also really cool but I didn't get a chance to sew it pre-top-surgery. (I think I've also seen someone who made a chest-compressing variation on Regency short stays, but I can't find it now.)
In general a lot of underbust and waist-cincher patterns should work just fine for silhouette-shaping without much bust/hip emphasis -- my usual resource for free corset patterns (Aranea Black) recently took down all her free patterns but they're definitely still circulating out there. For general fashion purposes the sky is the limit and there are a lot of enthusiastic dudes in corsets out there. This Lucy Corsetry round-up shows a variety of modern corsetiers'  styles designated as being for men or more masculine silhouettes (including a SUPER aspirational brocaded corset with matching waistcoat made by Heavenly Corsets that I'd love to sew a historical spin on) and you can see some commonalities and possibilities for body-shaping.
I can also give some more general corset-sewing resources but I'm very much in the learning process here and I'd love any recs or input from people more experienced in pattern-drafting and corset-sewing.

someones said this better than me for sure but i cant stop thinking about black sails devoting a whole scene to flint teaching silver how to swordfight only for it to end with silver holding him at gunpoint. placing so much importance on flint teaching silver how to beat him only for silver to flip that on its head. like it wasnt even necessary in the first place except for how it was.

another thing i really like about madi as a core element of her character (that i feel is insufficiently expanded on) is the fact that she was raised to become the queen and so is hyperaware of how important it is — how duty bound she is — to comport herself in specific ways. she says this pretty much out loud when she’s talking to silver in s3 and they bond over the burden of leadership, and its clear in her behaviour when silver “dies” but they don’t really center this (or her) consistently. so part of the reason that madi comes off like she’s perfect is because she knows she represents something much larger than herself right but i wish she was given the space to explore the sacrfice & performance it entails. its crazy bc these themes are so key to the show itself, the groundwork is laid and ready. and other than the fact that they don’t let her interact with max or julius another related problem is that she doesn’t have any friends or confidantes outside her mother. this makes sense to some extent owing to her social position but it also means that if she gets no scenes with her mother (which she hardly does after s3) then we don’t really get what’s going on behind the scenes. she needed more interiority especially in s4 and i get they had a lot of plot to get through but it should have been a priority

If there was no Louis, who would be Lestat’s soul mate? Armand or David?
Neither. 😬
Here’s the thing. Without Louis, there would be no Lestat. Louis and Lestat are two halves of one whole. When Anne wrote IWTV, she was Louis. When she wrote TVL, she was Lestat. That’s why she had such a difficult time continuing to write Louis in the later books, because he represented that side of herself she needed to forget. Having recently experienced my own personal bout with immense grief, I understand this divide completely. It’s no coincidence that when Anne started making peace with all facets of herself, which she talked about once on her son’s podcast during PR for Prince Lestat, that Louis came back to the forefront of the plots. However, it was always the Loustat love story at the heart of the Chronicles. As I said, Louis and Lestat complete each other. One cannot exist without the other. It’s impossible.
It’s also important to remember that each of Lestat’s “loves” served a specific purpose for a specific time in Lestat’s journey. Yes, they existed due to the fact Anne was struggling with Louis, but the other fixations (whether intentionally or no) actually make sense given what they all represented.
You specifically mentioned David and Armand. I’ve always read Lestat’s relationship with David as Lestat searching for that knowledgeable father-figure he never had. Yes, there was Marius. However, there was a lot left unsaid wrt Lestat’s relationship with Marius, a lot to do with Armand, and a lot to do with the fact Lestat was never going to be the pupil Marius desired him to be. David came into the picture when Lestat was dealing with severe depression, body dysmorphia, and also feeling as if he should have died before he ever left Auvergne and therefore, deserved what Magnus had done to him. Lestat’s arc at that point was a continuous cycle of abuse and trauma, and Lestat was left reeling. David represented a metaphorical chance for Lestat to break the cycle of his trauma. David tried to help Lestat. He tried to help Lestat see that he wasn’t this evil monster. Lestat, however, was too traumatized at that point. He hates himself so much, hates his light because he feels it hurts the ones he loves, and he goes on a journey of shattering his own self-delusion. However, at the same time, he’s convinced he’s irredeemable and a wicked monster, no better than wild animals or psychopathic serial killers. That goes back to the recurring dream he’d have in which a wild tiger was after David. When Lestat turns David against his will, a direct parallel to what Magnus did to him and also Lestat filling the role of the tiger from his dreams, it was Lestat behaving how he felt a monster should behave and taking it out on the one who tried to tell him he’s actually not an awful blight on humanity. Lestat became the tiger. Lestat became Magnus. However! Unlike both the tiger and Magnus, Lestat regretted what he’d done. He hated himself. He wanted David to hate him, but David forgives him, telling him that he took the choice away, but David was grateful for it, because he knew he’d always wanted immortality despite his refusal on the grounds of morality. He also tells Lestat that if he was truly so evil, he wouldn’t be feeling the shame and guilt and self-loathing. David was the truth for Lestat in those moments. Lestat just couldn’t believe it, because he hated himself too much. It’s the same concept as Lestat always being in amazed disbelief when Louis would tell him that he loves him. Lestat feels he’s unworthy of love, unworthy of kindness, unworthy of forgiveness. All of that is bundled up in a mosaic of contradictions, and you just have to know his history to understand why Lestat operates the way he does.
Lestat’s relationship with Armand is another complicated one. Yes, Armand tried to rape Lestat and force him into loving him. However, given Armand’s own traumatic history, it’s no wonder that is his idea of love. When Armand does these things, such as trying to force Lestat or his ways of protecting Louis, he’s not doing it with malicious intent. He’s doing it, because he genuinely believes he’s helping. Lestat is aware of this. Lestat is the first person to actually show Armand kindness when they initially meet in Paris. He dismantles Armand’s coven, which takes Armand centuries to truly let go, but he gives Armand a new way of life. He pulls Armand into the warmth and light of humanity from the darkness of living the lie in that by serving Satan they are serving God. There’s a kinship there. They are both severely traumatized beings, and they understand that aspect in each other. There were hints to the fact that Lestat’s later views of Marius were colored by the fact he finally knew of Armand’s entire history with Marius. Lestat forgives Armand, and that sets an example. Yes, there’s a rivalry. There’s a beef that continues for centuries. However, there’s also love and friendship and loyalty. It’s like what Armand tells Daniel in QOTD wrt Lestat’s concert and the threats to Lestat’s life. Armand says he can’t “not go” to Lestat when Lestat might have need of him. After all, Lestat showed Armand that he didn’t have to live a wretched existence dwelling in the darkness of the tombs. He gave Armand money. He gave Armand a place to live. He gave Armand (and Nicki) the theater. He forgave Armand for killing Claudia and lying to him about Louis being dead all those years. Lestat represented to Armand what Armand wished Marius could’ve been to him, but the relationship between Armand and Lestat was never going to truly work due to the fact Armand tried to force Lestat, and Lestat was simply not emotionally equipped to deal with everything Armand would’ve needed.
I hate sounding like a broken record, but there’s just so much to these relationships, and it’s not as easy as saying “well if this one is gone then replace them with this one.” Mmmm no, because they all function with a completely different dynamic and for a completely different purpose depending upon the character. Louis is it for Lestat and like I said, without him, there is no Lestat. Two halves of one whole.

neocities guide - why you should build your own html website
do you miss the charm of the 90s/00s web where sites had actual personality instead of the same minimalistic theme? are you feeling drained by social media and the constant corporate monopoly of your data and time? do you want to be excited about the internet again? try neocities!!
what is neocities?
neocities is a free hosting website that lets you build your own html website from scratch, with total creative control. in their own words: "we are tired of living in an online world where people are isolated from each other on boring, generic social networks that don't let us truly express ourselves. it's time we took back our personalities from these sterilized, lifeless, monetized, data mined, monitored addiction machines and let our creativity flourish again."
why should I make my own website?
web3 has been overtaken by capitalism & conformity. websites that once were meant to be fun online social spaces now exist solely to steal your data and sell you things. it sucks!! building a personal site is a great way to express yourself and take control of your online experience.
what would I even put on a website?
the best part about making your own site is that you can do literally whatever the hell you want! focus on a specific subject or make it a wild collection of all your interests. share your art! make a shrine for one of your interests! post a picture of every bird you see when you step outside! make a collection of your favorite blinkies! the world is your oyster !! here are some cool example sites to inspire you: recently updated neocities sites | it can be fun to just look through these and browse people's content! space bar | local interstellar dive bar creature feature | halloween & monsters big gulp supreme peanutbuttaz | personal site dragodiluna linwood | personal site patho grove | personal site
