Fuel is another major contributor to the environmental impact of aviation. Jet fuel accounts for about two-thirds of a plane’s carbon emissions, so finding greener alternatives is vital. Biofuel is one such alternative. Derived from plants and other organic materials, biofuels emit less CO2 than standard fossil fuels during use and require little or no petroleum refining before they can be used as fuel in aircraft engines.
However, even if biofuel were cheaper than regular jet fuel (it isn't yet), airlines would still be reluctant to switch over: commercial aircraft are designed to operate best on high-octane kerosene rather than low-grade biofuels like ethanol or biodiesel; they aren't equipped with systems that can handle the corrosive effects of some alternatives like butanol; and making enough biodiesel requires large amounts of land—land that could otherwise be used for food production.
For now, at least, electric aircraft seem like a better option since they don't use any liquid fuel at all—but until battery technology improves enough for long flights without recharging stops, there are no escaping fossil fuels entirely when flying across oceans or continents!
