Marvel Two-in-One #71 (Gruenwald & Macchio/Wilson, Jan 1981). Crystal and Quicksilver are having a baby! Good thing Johnny’s not visiting, I’m sure he’d freak. Uncanny X-Men #142 (Claremont/Byrne, Feb 1981). It took years to bring back the X-Men, and more years to build them up into major players. Bizarre Adventures #25 (Macchio/Gulacy, Feb 1981). I’ve slogged through a few of these B&W magazines by now. This is the first time the format enhanced the story — rich shadows make Natasha’s latest mission sexier and more mysterious. Then, and I swear this is true, Humphrey Bogart turns up?! Well, I suppose the title did promise it would be bizarre.

Moon Knight #5 (Moench/Sienkiewicz, Mar 1981). A convoluted, experimental tale that kinda treats flashbacks as ghosts. I think. In this panel, Sienkiewicz’s style coheres a bit more into what I expect of him.

Fantastic Four #227 (Moench/Sienkiewicz, Feb 1981). Oil-guzzling brain parasites disrupt the fam’s lakeside vacation. Franklin (unwittingly?) detonates possessed creatures with his mind! This era manages to balance the sweetness of the established family dynamic with some newly twisted plots.
