With a loving heart and great aspirations, an old gentleman longs to do something for the society, but fails to put it into practice due to insufficient causes and conditions. So he inevitably feels desolate as if the day was waning and the road was ending. Actually, while lifetime is limited, aspirations are limitless. As long as we stick with our aspirations, there will always be opportunities to carry them out in our endless future lives. Therefore, what we lack are not opportunities but aspirations.

It was not until the eighteenth century that the concept of subconscious was brought forward in Western Psychology, where subconscious was compared to the underwater portion of an iceberg on the sea. However, as early as 2,500 years ago, the Buddha already mentioned the existence of subconscious and used ocean and wave to illustrate the relationship between subconscious and consciousness, which are elaborated in the scriptures and treatises of Consciousness-Only of Mahayana Buddhism.

It is hard to please the unenlightened mind. Keeping oneself happy is already not an easy task, and making other people always happy is even harder, because the nature of an unenlightened mind is impermanent and confused. If we cannot recognize this, everything we do to soothe the unenlightened mind tends to have various side effects and sequelae, just like opium, which eases the pain, but at the meantime brings much bigger trouble.

A capable person, if not quite wise, usually has a highly unenlightened mind and can become an outstanding worldling. But to learn Buddha Dharma, he will have to start from scratch. If one is still attached to the secular status and capabilities as well as the unenlightened mind that helps him succeed, such attachment will become the hindrance to Buddhist cultivation.
