Rambling about Kunigiri-Matching yet different
I've never made a post about this even though I think about it all the time, so here it is. Kunigiri is interesting because they both have the qualities of the other's ideals. And what I mean by this is that Chigiri has the straightforwardness and confidence of a hero, while Kunigami has the stalwart resolve to keep going in soccer despite his circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a way, they're total opposites much like the other partners in Blue Lock, and they both have exactly what the other person is "missing" in soccer. Chigiri wanted to find a reason to keep playing soccer despite his injury, so it makes sense that he'd end up getting along with a guy who's never going to give up soccer no matter the circumstances. And Kunigami is someone who wants to inspire others and be a "hero", but who seriously lacks the confidence in order to do that, so it makes sense that he'd get along with a snarky yet confident guy.
And in the beginning, their roles are completely reversed. Kunigami is the bigshot player that has a lot of potential and talent, and is someone everyone gravitates towards, where as Chigiri is a loner who wants nothing to do with anyone.
We see in the Second Selection arc when they're together that out of the two of them, it's actually Chigiri that's the more extroverted one. He's the one constantly making jokes at Reo's expense and he's the one who plainly says Reo should get over his moping and not sabotage their plays just to get back at his partner.
Tumblr media
Kunigami is known to not be that great with conflict and especially not that great when it comes to receiving praise for his efforts. While he was also great at soccer as a kid, it's clear that was never the thing that truly ostracized him from the others when he was young like it did with the other Blue Lockers, namely Bachira and Chigiri. Their pasts contrast each other totally as well just like everything else.
Which I why i think it's really cute that they sort of have matching nicknames. All the Blue Lockers have a little nickname that the others will sometimes refer to them, and I like that Chigiri's is "Princess" and Kunigami's is "Hero".
Hero's in stories are always saving Princesses, though their relationship is switched because Chigiri never needed saving. Kunigami is the one who really needs help from others.

Here’s my entry for this year’s Hunter x Hunter big bang @hxhbb19! I was able to illustrate @patxaran‘s fic At the End of Everything and decided on drawing the story’s setting, which centers on the deadly and mysterious Lake Solaris. It’s a really interesting read, so please check it out if you have a chance!

unspoken but not unsaid :: a janaya meta
Janai and Amaya are proof of the age old saying of quality over quantity, which is to say: for a ship with understandably limited time to develop, they are exceedingly well paced and well done with a steady progression and an intriguing, emotionally investing dynamic. It is astonishing how many of their scenes are overloaded, working over time to get you on board (if sword wielding lesbians wasn’t enough at face value). This is particularly impressive given how few of their scenes include dialogue, with the majority of their dynamic resting on being unspoken — but not unsaid, or misunderstood.
AKA I’ve had a vague idea for Janaya meta in my head for over a year now, and what better time to finally get it out than JanaiWeek? So let’s dive in, episode by episode, without further ado.

Season two opens with a bang, and so much of it is owed to the amazing fight scene with Amaya and the Sunfire elves at the Breach. It’s fun and exciting to see a location we’ve only had alluded to, mostly, and to see Amaya in her day job. The other half of the equation, quite literally, is Janai, with one of the most striking and beautiful character designs in the show (which is saying something — and my personal favourite) and wielding a weapon we’ve only gotten a hint of its true potential.
We’ve never seen Amaya lose a fight before, whether in countering Viren’s quick remarks or in the way she decimates Rayla at the Banther Lodge, even though Runaan himself states that Rayla may be the quickest and fastest of all their troupes. Amaya is a force to be reckoned with and deals with the other Sunfire elves easily and efficiently.
Janai poses a challenge and in some ways sends Amaya running.
It emphasizes the threat of the border, Janai’s fighting skill, and that “Aunt Amaya says she never encountered a Sunfire elf who could best her in battle — until she met Janai,” (Callum’s Spellbook) indeed.
The fact that they’re military equals, opponents, sword and shield, is a lovely foundation for what they’ll become. The ambiguity of their first on screen meeting is also rather fun — given their positions, it’s likely they’ve run into each other before — or is this somehow a first encounter? Either is bracing and great fic fodder.
As an introduction to the season and their dynamic, and to Janai as a character, it’s a fantastic start. But what follows is almost even more important.
