A (probably over-analyzed) interpretation of the Dying in a Hot Tub music video

Let’s start at the start: 

Emerson notices the coin at the bottom. 

I was a little confused as to why they chose a coin instead of something more significant, but then I realized: it might be odd to have a coin at the bottom of a pool, but what about a fountain, or a well? You toss coins in to make wishes. Coins at the bottom of a body of water represent those wishes, and hopes, and dreams.

Emerson (always the dreamer) goes after it. 

But it is a bit naïve: he puts himself in danger to go after it, and a lot of people stop believing in magic and wishes when they grow up, so is the coin really that significant? People often stop believing in dreams when they grow up, too.

But maybe that’s the point. Emerson is a lot of things (including child-like) but he’s not dumb. In order to keep himself going and make life worth it, he chooses to keep believing in dreams.

Reality vs. Daydreams  

The toys and the dog are straight out of the lyrics, and pretty clearly referencing nostalgia. So combine that with the coin, and the water is almost a representation of dreaming and wishing for things, almost to the extent that you’re in your own world, detached from reality (the surface). Emerson is very good at disconnecting from reality with his drawings and dreaming and listening to Alan Watts lectures, and I think it’s helped him a lot in dealing with past and present stresses.

Sebastian and Remington are alarmed at first, but Emerson seems to show them he’s down there of his own choice, and he found something good: the light. When they go towards the light, they’re going towards something bright, something hopeful, something to strive for.

Making your own world, dreaming, and living in your head (as Emerson is the poster boy for) can be a relatively good coping mechanism. But that doesn’t mean it’s free from risks. If you use it to hide from reality instead of rejuvenating yourself to face reality again, you don’t deal with reality’s problems, and they start to pile up. When that happens, it’s even nastier when you have to return to reality. That, in turn, means you want to retreat to your inner world more often, and the problems pile up even quicker. It’s a vicious cycle that’s very tempting. You might find yourself not wanting to have to return to harsh reality at all…

It fits right in with the concept they described for their cover shoot: They held an underwater tea party (a very dreamy thing kids do), but they didn’t want to grow up. They were so stubborn about it that they never came up for air, and drowned.

Full disclosure: I’m a bit biased when it comes to metaphorical interpretations of what being underwater means. Because to me, I think of my experiences with depression like I’m underwater. Everything moves a bit more slowly (like how my brain gets sluggish and time doesn’t work quite right), and sounds are muffled and garbled (like how I can’t quite think or feel things right). So I might be reading some things into it that aren’t there.

So who pulls them out?

I love the theories and jokes that it’s Curcio or Luis, but I think it’s intentionally kept ambiguous. 

There are three options in my mind:

1: It’s a specific person, but they don’t want to say who, probably for personal reasons. 

2: They don’t know. I sometimes wonder how much of their “What do ~you guys~ think?” ambiguity is them wanting us to think and make our own interpretations, and how much is them not really planning out what it actually is, just throwing in some uncommitted symbolism and seeing what we make of it.

3: It’s us, the fans. They constantly talk highly of us. They do things they don’t have to for us (five and six hour signings, VIP sessions almost every show, playing free shows in the cold or the rain if a venue is compromised). Sebastian has said (a few times, I think) that other bands might meet fans because they feel obligated to but see it as a chore, but they do it because they love it. On Royal Television, there have been several instances where Emerson has been in a bad mood, then talked with fans and come back with that sparkle in his eye. Remington keeps fan art in his bunk. They care about us, and I don’t know about you, but I sure as hell care about them. If they needed help, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would do it.

There are a few more little things I have Opinions on, but this is the majority of it.
