BRAND NEW: "Rube" by The Kickback
"I imagined a woman falling in love with LHO while shopping at the Jewel-Osco grocery store on Milwaukee and Ashland Ave. in Chicago. She watches him get put down by Jack Ruby and gets all worked up about it. She's filled with lust and rage and starts poking holes in all the soup cans. The kind of thing you secretly hope a girl would do for you and then would be promptly horrified if it ever happened. I don't know. I was working through some shit." - Billy from The Kickback re: this brand spanking new track
Read the Alternative Press interview here. Get a copy of the new record featuring the singer's own blood here while you still can.

NEW: "Dramamine" by Jeff Rosenstock
The only thing that can make me love surprise releases more is when they come from an artist I'm pretty much obsessed with at this point. Wait, not all surprise releases are good. I mean...wait, what were we talking about?

NEW COVER: "Can't Hardly Wait" by Kindling
I was unfamiliar with Kindling until the release of this split with Kestrels, but I was charmed by their fuzz-driven take on this Replacements classic.
That paragraph was pretty tame. Ya'll ever juggle otters until one gets sick and it's not the one you bet on so no college for you?
You are not alone.

NEW: "The Real Deadpool Rap" by mc chris
How did I miss this? Sometimes, I am distracted by squirrels, soul-staining news reports or new socks. I wish there were more squirrels and socks in my life. I just remembered I bought Deadpool socks on Saturday. Neat.
What were we talking about again?

NEW: "bruce hated puppies" by christian fitness
Falco just doesn't stop. The leader of mclusky and Future of the Left has put out a brand new tune from his latest band christian fitness and it's exactly the kind of ludicrous force play that fans have come to expect.
In his own words...:
it's been a strange year, what with Brexit, Mcexit(Steve McClaren from both Newcastle and Derby), Trump, death and now, impending fatherhood (for me at least, don't know about you).
with that in mind I present 'bruce hated puppies.'
no, you fuck off.

NEW: "Hippopotamus" by Sparks
Ah, Sparks. The American Queen that's far more prolific, weird and, well, alive. Pre-orders for their new album Hippopotamus opened today and the first 1,000 orders get a 7" as well as a signed lyric sheet. At this point in my life, I am hesitant to pre-order anything but the most trusted work, but I love Sparks too much to resist a signed lyric sheet for my autograph wall. The song itself is nice and weird and gives me hope that I won't be disappointed once the record arrives. (Sorry, Japandroids, but you hurt me a little.) Happy Sparks Day.

DISCOVERED: "The Promise" by Shellshag
I stumbled upon Shellshag's all cover album a few months ago and am pleased with the result. They do a tremendous job with this cover of one of the greatest pop songs ever written. They also did a great version of my favorite INXS song ("Don't Change") and a decent one of my favorite Descendents songs ("Good Good Things"). If you love these tracks like I do, you can get a brand new vinyl copy of the album here for less than $20.
In full disclosure, this is my second-favorite cover of this pop masterpiece.I rarely puff out my own musical chest, but I will never stop thinking of my old band's version as #1. You can find that in the post below...after you enjoy Shellshag's, of course.

FAVORITE/HOMEMADE: "The Promise" by hollander
Back when the band was still active and my liver was still getting frequent workouts, I worked for years to convince they boys that we should cover When In Rome's pop masterpiece "The Promise". I was rarely one of those guys that could hear a full song in my head, but the exception was the clear vision I had of what a South Dakota punk band could do with this tune. It took a long time, but I finally convinced them to arrange my screaming dream. When we recorded it, it was the only time I wasn't nervous in the studio. It turned out to be our most requested tune. That's kind of annoying when you're writing and playing your own music, but it's hard to deny that you made something people like, even if that thing is a synth-pop tune you beat the living shit out of with punk rock sensibilities.
To this day, nearly a decade after the band played their last show, I still get texts from friends that hear the song and think of my screaming. I'll take that as a compliment forever.

"1934 (Rough Cut)" by Infinity Hotel
This was the last song produced by the now-defunct Infinity Hotel. When Bandcamp announced last week that, for one day only, all their profits would go to the ACLU, I went a little crazy moving some things from my "Wishlis"t to my "Purchased Items". That included ordering a copy of the band's masterpiece "Nobody Knows" for my jukebox. Now, I'm finding all I can about this band and learning, with the help of the group's bassist, Dan, that guitarist/vocalist Eric went on to form two bands: Adult Dude and Katie Ellen.
Let the obsessive absorption continue.

NEW: "Silver Velvet" by The Courtneys
These girls put out a record in 2013 that became one of my favorites of 2014, even if it was closer to 2015 when I could finally get a friggin' copy. (Strong fail, Hockey Dad Records.) Now, they're back with more sun-soaked magic. I'll probably pre-order this one and save my anger for, you know, bigger problems.

NEW: "Stories Of The Alone" by Traindodge
When they played the back floor of the Moonlight Bar in Mitchell, SD, in 2009, Traindodge quickly became the loudest band I'd ever heard in that zip code. They were also easily one of the best. Combine that memory (and ear damage) with this tune and I am officially psyched for the new record.
