I think Sanderson’s greatest strength when writing is being able to make you initially hate a character with your whole being and then, through expanding the world and the narrative, makes those same characters fan favorites.

Rereading TWoK’s I’m reminded of how the first time I read I fucking HATED Adolin. What a dick. What an asshole. Jock. Daddy’s money ass rich boy.

Now, after reading all of Stormlight I would probably pass away if anything bad happened to him. His whimsy? Unmatched. Style? Impeccable. Aptitude for revenge? Present. He is My Little Pony (power of friendship). He’s just a horse girl that likes clubbing and making new friends.

Same thing happened for me with Susebron, TenSoon, Marsh, etc etc etc.

Sanderson is a really big fan of magic that sounds fun but then is secretly hella dark and probably has to do with killing souls.

Hey look this magic lets you see pretty colors and hear music better and animate corpses. How'd you get that magic? Oh I ate someone's soul. Don't worry they're fine, they just can't experience beauty anymore.

Look Look eat the metal and you can do cool stuff like yeet yourself in the air or run super fast. Eat the metal and you can become superman.

Or alternatively, you could STAB someone with the metal and STEAL THEIR SOUL! They will be very dead and it will be very messy. But look you have magical powers plus cool new jewelry

Here on Roshar you get magical powers, a built-in best friend/therapist, and a kick ass sword. But if you fuck up at all that new friend of yours will die and you will personally be responsible for killing a tiny part of god. Have fun!

Hoid is such a weird character if only for his apparent affinity for Roshar of all places in the Cosmere. If I were a worldhopper, "weekly hurricane planet stuck in the middle ages" is not necessarily where I'd want to be.

Sanderson characters are such drama queens. (I'm using "drama queen" to mean any person of any gender as long as they're super dramatic.) Hoid is the obvious one, he's so dramatic that Siri noticed it in Warbreaker. But we also have people like Kelsier, who have this entire monologue to the Lord Ruler in front of hundreds, if not thousands, of people, starting his own religion as a result. We have Hrathen, who makes himself into a spectacle to advertise his religion. And then... Kaladin. He's the king of drama queens. "Honor is dead. But I'll see what I can do." And then he jumps into an arena with FOUR SHARDBEARERS. AND WINS.

Hoid knows he's a drama queen. He's a Lightweaver, they're all pretty dramatic. Kelsier probably knows how dramatic he is. That's probably half the reason he did that monologue. Hrathen's entire reason for the poison was drama. But Kaladin doesn't even try. He just gets these dramatic moments going about his daily life. He doesn't care about causing drama, he cares about helping people. If that means drama, then so be it.

Imagine if Kal had gone and become a surgeon in kharbranth like his dad wanted. What if he’d ended up becoming part of the Diagram group? What if the enemy had Kal as their weapon instead of Dalinar? Frick that Dalinar would be dead in that plateau run bro. No Urithiru. Odium would have taken over and the cosmere would be destroyed

Or. Teft would have been our main boi and we'd have a grumpy old man addicted to weed leading the resistance

Oh my goodness he goes to kharbranth and becomes an edgedancer instead because healing ye know and Shallan's story goes as normal until she has her episode and they think she tried to off herself and they put her in the hospital and cue hot young edgedancer surgeon Kaladin. He falls for her but she does not fall for him (I will die with Shallan x Adolin). She leaves, he follows her. He ends up on the shattered plains and saves Dalinars life when Adolin beaten and bloody drags Dalinar's half dead body back from the disaster plateau run where Sadeas betrays them and now you have Kaladin favored advisor and surgeon of the royal Kholin household

So far EVERY Single Time Adolnesium-Will-Remember-Our-Plight-Eventually's name is said I crack up. Genuinely distracting.
