Hello! I have a quick question about the accuracy of Addy's Beforever dress. It seems a lot more fancy than her original, and it is almost too nice to be given away to someone in her circumstances. Were girls in Addy's situation really given such nice clothing?

So we know for a fact that clothes were donated to former enslaved people by various charity organizations. The Freedman’s Record, a publication of the New England Freedmen’s Aid Society, describes boxes and barrels of clothing being collected and shipped to schools which served former enslaved people. The clothing was both new and used, although not always in good condition. Susan Walker, who worked for another branch of the Freedmen’s Society, wrote in her diary that she had to sort through ragged and soiled clothing donations. The clothes didn’t always stay in their original state, however.

Your question reminded me of a tidbit shared by Cheyney McKnight in a video she did on Afro-Victorian aesthetics with Bernadette Banner. She cited an occasion when Black mothers heavily altered dresses that had been donated to them which was described in the memoir First days amongst the contrabands by Elizabeth Hyde Botume.

As to the relative “fancy-ness” of the dress, there's a series of photographs from the Civil War period which feature "white slaves" - in reality, very light skinned Black people, many of them children. I imagine these photographs were distributed as a way of gaining support for the abolition movement as a sort of "Can you believe the horrors of slavery were inflicted on white children, too?" which tells you a lot about people's attitudes towards race at the time. The girls in these photos wear dresses which are very similar to Addy's Beforever dress.

And while I think that these children were certainly “dressed up” for their portraits, and the photographs were for publicity, these were former enslaved children.

I wonder also if the blue color is a nod to Addy's West African heritage. Indigo was cultivated by West African tribes and blue clothing was used in the 2016 remake of Roots for both the characters in Africa and after they became enslaved, as a reference to their African heritage.
