Angie Stardust behind the scenes of City of Lost Souls (1983) dir. Rosa Von Praunheim

Stardust was a Black transsexual lesbian who began her career as a drag queen and singer around the age of 14, performing with the Jewel Box Revue and frequenting Club 82 in New York City. She was rejected when she began taking estrogen, and in the early 1970s she relocated to Hamburg and became a citizen of Germany. There she would go on to star in several films and open her own establishment, Angie’s Nightclub, where she performed nightly and earned her moniker as the Big Mama of Soul. She would also find companionship in a number of butch lovers over the years. Though she passed in 2007, her club is still going and well loved by the nightlife scene in Hamburg.
