Imagine an alternate scenario: an NHL team hosts military night, where the players all wear camo jerseys in warmup to show their support for the army. One player refuses to participate in warmup, citing his pacifist beliefs. In an interview, the player says that he respects everyone, and everyone’s choices, but his beliefs don’t align with the idea of a military. The coach stands up for him, and says that he respects him for standing up for his beliefs, and the NHL releases a statement that says that players can choose which initiatives to support.

Wouldn’t there be a huge uproar? The only difference between this scenario and the one that occurred is that being in the military is a choice. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community is not.

Provorov cited his “religious beliefs” were the reason for not participating in pride night. This begs the question of whether or not he believes that people should be equal, regardless of their sexuality and gender. This is bigotry hiding behind religion. He chose not to do the BARE FUCKING MINIMUM of wearing a jersey with rainbow numbers on it for twenty minutes to support a group of people that has been continuously marginalized and descriminated against.

Do better NHL.
