THIS IS THE FIRST EPISODE I WATCHED AFTER SUCH A HIATUS IN VIEWING THE SERIES

(I didn’t watch it before NATLA so as to better appreciate it on its own terms)

Aang is such a casual badass

rarely respects any rules

(not only authoritarian ones and worldly institution ones but easily handwaves pretty simple straightforward ones such as ‘don’t steal’)

but people don’t correctly perceive how devil-may-care he is, because he has such an infectious, good attitude.

bc he isn’t like ‘oh woe is me’ angst or ‘rrrr the world sucks’

devil-may-care in this case also = happy-go-lucky.

Two phrases you don’t see too often overlap in one person. Actually … I don’t think I’ve seen it anywhere. But feel free to chime in if you have other examples in other fandoms.

Because typically, characters like this are goody-two-shoes, thinks everyone should follow the rules, be nice, etc.

He’s definitely aboard the ‘be nice’ train, but flips a middle finger not in actuality because he would never be that rude at nearly every convention he encounters in-world.

AND THAT INCLUDES THE IMPLICIT SOCIETAL CONVENTION THAT INFLICTING VIOLENCE AGAINST PEOPLE WHO HURT YOU IS MORALLY JUSTIFIED.

You just literally elude peoples’ psyches like an airbender bagua form. LMBO.

seeing moves like these really makes you realize how easy aang went on his other opponents who didn't pose a serious threat to his or others' well-being (peep all of his s1 fights with zuko where he's mainly just dodging him without the use of any bending sometimes). put some respect on his name !!
