Self Evaluation
I felt I did pretty well. I wish I could've animated a few more elements but things were tough and going for such a depressing theme drained me more than I was expecting, likely exasperated by the pandemic.
I was happy to get a Mac Miller song to work on as his music was, and still is, an inspiration to me. With that and my own history of depression I really did want to reflect the themes within the lyrics of the non instrumental version of the song for this assignment so I listened to the non instrumental repeatedly to get ideas of imagery I could use. I was constantly finding the balance between showing the issue and not going too far or getting graphic, I think I did okay in that regard.
I animated using Firealpaca to draw frame by frame. I really appreciated how easy the colouring process is with a digital software compared to traditional mediums. It was far quicker than it would've been attempting it traditionally on paper.
I felt some of the animated segments could have been smoother and gone slightly more with the music in terms of timing, something I felt was quite hard. Firealpaca doesn't have an audio track so I was trying to do the math in my head for the timings and some of that wasn't as exact as it could've been.
I had to cut some parts I had in the storyboard with time constraits, it just wasn't going to happen, like the clock hands spinning fast which was going to represent how certain drugs can mess with a person's perseption of time, making it feel as if it is going faster for example.
Floating in space is symbolism for the short lived euphoria drugs can give and how it allows you to escape. Particularly Fentanyl, a drug that the singer had been abusing. The pill bottle falling was meant to show the mental health fall caused by drugs and the bottle hitting the ground to be hitting rock bottom and snapping as it takes over your life as well as imagery related to suicide.

Mac Miller - Rain Ideas
Colour Palette
Want to use the album cover, that the song was on, with the colours inverted as the colour palette for the animation. I felt the original colour scheme of the album cover had too much yellow and warm tones so I decided to invert it to get the cold colours to help set the mood of the song.

The song is very sad in terms if themes, a lot of lines from the non instrumental version also hold a very different impact since his passing. I want to reflect that.
It deals with death, depression, drugs, violence and suicidal thoughts.

Flower Symbolism
The use of flowers was something I likely picked up back in 2009 from an animatic to this Vocaloid song
youtube
The fan theory into the symbolism for the song back in the day was that the flowers represented decay, gore, acid burns; that the pretty flowers hide such unsightly things. It is an art theme I've found myself using a lot over the years and I felt it would work extremely well for this animation due to the nature of the original song which deals with substance abuse, depression and suicidal thoughts.

Some animations I think I'll look at for inspiration:
youtube
Has a similar art and colour aesthetic I want to use as well as the song itself having a similar sad theming to it.
youtube
I really like the art style and tge simplicity of this animated mv, its really enjoyable to watch but isn't overly complicated or overly detailed.
youtube
Love the animated transitions in this, absolutely stunning how each thing transforms into something different.
youtube
Very abstract but works so well with the piece, its hard to explain but the choice of colours and textures on different notes and bars of the piece reflected the sounds so beautifully. Very simple but impactful and very enjoyable to watch.
youtube
Like the lineless art style of this mv, the animation in a lot of areas is actually pretty limited but it still works really well. It focuses on getting the point across and still looks super nice. Also love the stylisation of all the characters and the character designs in general.

The dark theme and messy art style of this short gave me huge inspiration. It also deals with substance abuse to some extent which helped give me ideas of where I could go with the animation.

Self Portrait
My self portrait represents my transformation this year into being comfortable expressing being Swedish, finally letting go of the facade created by xenophobic bullying I received moving to the UK and instead embracing my culture I neglected for so many years. This is my self portrait, this is who I am.
