Good morning, friends! Here's a look at the interior illustration I made for the current cover story of @barrons, out on newsstands now. The story details the success of Liberty Media and features interviews with Liberty's majority owner, John Malone, and Liberty's CEO, Greg Maffei. My eternal gratitude to @cmihal for this assignment and to @radiieso for the beautiful interior layout design! https://www.instagram.com/p/BqKqMFKhtEa/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ho7qugdz2h8q

Happy weekend, friends! I'm so excited to share a new cover illustration I made for this weeks issue of @barrons! I was hard at work this past week on both this and a full page illustration that accompanied the cover story, which I'll share soon as well. I am very grateful and so happy to have been able to create the illustrations and collaborate with the spectacular design director @cmihal on this assignment ❤️ The story is live on their website and the issue is out on newsstands today! https://www.instagram.com/p/BqA5G9NH9gz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bvrnivq9j4b0

I am incredibly excited to share the portrait illustration of Tan France I made for the very first issue of GQ Middle East! He wrote a Style essay about embracing our curiosity for new styles and it is so wonderful. This version is my own personal variant -- the print version appears sans background! I am so grateful to have had the chance to work with the art director Loretta De Goede on this assignment 💙

Happy October! In honor of this time of year, how about an illustration of an omen, delivered within a dream? I've been playing around with the idea for this piece for quite a while now, inspired (haunted) by a lyric from the Bat For Lashes song Joe's Dream.

Oh hey! I worked with the art director Ryan Hubbard in August on an illustration for Medium. The piece accompanied an article about both extreme fitness as a method of processing the midlife crisis and the authors experience with utilizing athleticism to manage and harmonize with depression.
I thought I would share a bit about my process in making this one. I started out by creating a bunch of thumbnail sketches in Procreate on my iPad Pro. The program is incredibly flexible and has such an intuitive interface, i.e. the perfect conditions for creating sketches.
Tumblr media
I keep my sketches rough, to be more of loose estimations of the final than of ornate drawings in and of themselves. I then color and fine-tune the four concepts I found the strongest. During this stage, I kept turning each idea over in my mind and began to realize that variations were possible that may better communicate the concept of the article. So I ended up sending the group of nine sketches you see above to Ryan for approval.
Tumblr media
Ryan found this option to be both visually and conceptually strongest, giving me the go-ahead to move forward with it. I was delighted -- it was my favorite sketch of the group and the one I felt best about creating a final of.
Tumblr media
I had my boyfriend take pictures of me running outside of our apartment and scoured the internet for references of foggy forests, forest floor flora, and crocus flowers. With those in mind (and with a soundtrack of moody electronic music playing in the background), I created a quick sketch of the final on watercolor paper. I then drew the final line work over that sketch in graphite, specifically with a lead holder. I prefer to use lead holders for fine pencil work, as the sharpeners you use to point the lead create an incredibly fine point.
Tumblr media
After scanning the drawing, I took the file into Photoshop, where I colored it, applied some textures, and finished off the piece with some fine details (using Kyle T. Webster’s incredible brushes, no doubt).
This assignment was a really enjoyable challenge and I had a blast making the illustration. Thanks again to Ryan for the collaboration and art direction! Make sure to head over to Medium to read the article and see the illustration in its live form.

I've been enjoying these recent couture collections, especially the Givenchy collection under the new artistic director, Clare Waight Keller. The collection dives deep into Givenchy's archives, resurfaces with some gorgeous looks and silhouettes, and modernizes them. I also loved that the atelier team who created the collection came out with the director at the shows close. Couture is time and labor-intensive and involves many dedicated artisans. It's nice to see people who work so diligently behind the scenes recieve much-deserved respect and appreciation. #fashion #fashionillustration #givenchy

Hey friends! I've been making a lot of quick fashion sketches recently, mostly because much of the work I've been making this past month has been work I can't share with you. But also because I love to draw clothing! So here's an #ootd from a cooler, misty day in New York, before this heat wave.

I am so humbled to have heard that the illustration I made for Project2021 to illuminate refugee experiences has been selected to appear in the American Illustration 37 annual book. I am very grateful to @american_illustration_winners and the jury for this honor! A big thank you is in order for my art director @sarahmadeline for inviting me to work with her on this illustration and for giving me an opportunity to productively express myself in support of people who require our continued attention and support. If you'd like a print of the illustration, you can purchase one from Project2021. All of the profits from the prints sales are being donated to the National Immigration Law Center. A link is available in my bio. #AI37 #AmericanIllustration #Illustration

Find A Butcher Counter That Looks Like This (for GQ Magazine) Art direction by Martin Salazar
Hey friends! I made this illustration for a feature article in the February 2017 issue of GQ, titled "How To Be a Better, Smarter, Happier Meat Eater".
I thought it would be a fun chance to also show you the sketches I sent in (and even a reference!) so you can see how the illustration was created.
The prompt for the illustration was to draw a half page piece of a contemporary and rather hip butchershop, with a young butcher and a nicely detailed selection of meats as the focus. I went forward with this idea in mind for my sketches and sent these two to my AD. He chose the closeup of the butcher counter, to get a better and more detailed view of the different cuts of meat.
I’ll admit, the figure for the final took some trial and error for to figure out. I wasn’t quite confident about the style and look of the butcher I drew in the sketch, so I went ahead and created someone new. I took references of myself to work from for anatomical accuracy, including this one above. I also felt like the subway tiling behind her was too cold and maybe even a bit too on-trend, so I opted out for a warm, textured gradient behind her instead.
Thanks again to Martin for the excellent assignment and art direction!

I am very excited to share the illustration I made of Ángel Di María for Issue 12 of 8 by 8 Magazine! Many thanks to Robert Priest of Priest + Grace for his great art direction with this piece.
This portrait accompanies a story about the manager of the French football club, AS Monaco FC, Leonardo Jardim, and his "knack for turning young players into superstars". One such superstar and star of this illustration, Ángel Di María, has a reputation for using dramatic and teary-eyed performances during games, pretending to have been fouled or hurt.

I had the pleasure of working with @iamrumz on portraits of 6 different interpretations of Frankenstein's "monster”. They were made for his digital publication, The Completist, to accompany an article that dissects several interpretations of the Frankenstein story created during 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s by British film company Hammer Film Productions.
Go check the story and the illustrations out!
Thanks again to my art director, Rumsey Taylor, for everything. This assignment was an appropriately spooky blast to work on!
