The cult classic film Battle Royale turned 20 years old today! The film was originally released on December 16th 2000, directed by Kinji Fukasaku – a prominent Japanese director and screenwriter. Battle Royale (based on the novel of the same name) quickly grew a large global following, becoming a cultural phenomenon. American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino considers it one of his greatest influences, as stated in interviews and evidenced by his works such as Kill Bill. Battle Royale’s legacy lives on even today in popular culture, in properties like The Hunger Games, Btooom!, Danganronpa, Avengers Arena and many more. The concept has even become a popular gaming genre, through games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite.
