The boy shook his head with a playful grin plastered to his face at his mother’s word. “Okay, okay. I get it. No sleeping in class, not even resting my eyes, because i would definitely fall asleep in class if i decided to ‘rest my eyes’ after lacrosse practice.” jamie said with a small laugh. “Yeah, and i’d really like to become a vet someday so i think i can manage not sleeping during school hours.” he declared with an adamant nod of his head. “Haloween is a classic, no matter how many times you’ve seen it, mom, but, Don’t Breathe it is! especially if you’re counting on staying awake to watch it.” 

“Okay, lacrosse is after school. You can sleep as much as you want after that.” She laughed. “I slept in school once and never did it again, only because that was the day I found out I was a sleep talker. Man, it was bad.” She shook her head, recalling one of her worst high school memories. “It’s a classic, but I’ve seen it so, so many times, and I’d love to see Don’t Breathe. We can watch Halloween after, if you want?”

Jamie shook his head slowly at his mother’s words, a grin still plastered to his face. “Okay. no napping during school. Not even resting my eyes, because that apparently leads to napping.” he stated in agreement, knowing he’d never take a nap during school despite his playful argument. “see, one day wont hurt, it’ll be fine — but, y’know, vet school, if i want to go i better step up my game, eh?” he really wanted to become a vet one day; it wasn’t exactly following in his parent’s footsteps with going into the medical field, but it was close enough in its own ways. “only joking! just — don’t tell Paige i said that, i’ll never hear the end of her arguments. You haven’t? it looks awesome, these people break into this blind man’s house to take his money, because, y’know, they think he’s not anything because he’s blind and it’ll be a piece of cake — and bam, they were obviously wrong, because they end up being hunted, not the hunters. at least that’s what i learned from the previews, Or we could watch a classic, like Halloween, since you’ll most likely fall asleep.”

“Well, I mean, I guess you could rest your eyes, but not on a couch in the library, or anything. Maybe like - like, the last five minutes of the hour when the teacher is done teaching. Not in any science classes, though. Those are important to being a vet.” She joked, knowing that either way her son most likely wouldn’t doze off in a class. Mika listened to the plot line of the movie, quickly becoming intrigued by it. “That, actually, sounds really good. I feel like it might keep me awake, so I’d rather watch that than Halloween. I’ve seen that too many times.”

“Oh, I really, really can’t take this...” She pondered, shaking her head. “But... it was free, you said?”

Jamie let out a dramatic sigh, still smiling though at his mother’s words. “I can rest my eyes, but isn’t that just another word for a cat nap? which, in itself is technically a nap?” he questioned with an amused tone. “I’m a straight A student, mom. I don’t think missing one day of school would hurt.” he said, but stopped; not wanting to push his luck. “Sounds like the perfect plan. Now, i’ve just got to hunt her down, wherever she’s off too — probably with callie, or something.” he said, his voice falling to a mutter at the simple mention of Callie before he changed the subject quickly back to the topic of the movie. “Alright, since your favorite child is actually here with you, I say Horror. what about don’t breathe?” 

“Just - Just rest your eyes, don’t cal it a nap. I don’t want to take any credit for letting one of my children nap for one day during school.” She laughed, shaking her head. “I know one day won’t hurt, but I’d rather you save that day for a day when you really do need it off from school. But, like you said, one day can’t hurt... I guess.” She shook her head, now laughing. “What? Favorite child? C’mon, I don’t pick favorites. Horror still works, though, despite that I’ve never even heard of don’t breathe.”

‘ wow, are you good?’ izabel questioned with frown. ‘ isn’t it a little dangerous for someone in your field of work to go hours without sleep – given how many hours you have already worked? i don’t know it all seems to be a bit sketchy to me. ’

“I’m completely fine.” She reassured, a grin on her lips. “Oh, no, not at all, not anymore. You kind of adjust to it and your body learns to sleep when it can. Don’t get me wrong, I can sleep now, I just have to be sure someone can wake me up if my pager goes off or hope that I can wake myself up. It’s not sketchy, it’s the lifestyle.”

Rolling his eyes, the book shook his head at his mother’s words. “Okay, yes, true, but what about free periods? can i nap it out then in the lacrosse bleachers or library?” he playfully questioned with quirked eyebrows. “Sounds like a fair deal. I’ll deal with Paige if you deal with dad? — well, depends on what we’re in the mood for. and because it was your idea, i think it’s only fair you pick the genre.” 

“Definitely not.” She shook her head, laughing. “I mean - maybe you can rest your eyes. No actual naps, because actual naps lead to falling asleep and that leads to sleeping through the rest of your classes. I’d rather you not miss classes.” She explained. “I’ve got dad, you get your sister. I think one of you should pick considering I’ll likely fall asleep.”

Jamie shook his head with a smile, knowing his mother all too well; practically memorizing the crazy schedule of her job, despite there not being a set one when she was on call. “But, hey, whenever in doubt, nap it out, right?” he joking said, “seriously, though, i’m surprised you’re still walking and talking now.” he said in a more serious tone, his eyes lighting up at the mention of family movie night. “Um, come to think of it, i don’t think there’s been on in a long while. No, no, it’s not lame, really. it’s a great suggestion, it gives us all time to be together at once.” 

Mika spent all of her time with her family whenever she could. To her, it came first. When it was her job, she never had a choice on when it came. For choices, though, it was always her family. “Always. That’s basically a motto at the hospital. A motto that’s only allowed at the hospital for me, and never at school for you.” She reminded, teasing him. “Now we’ve just got to get your father and sister in on this. Any suggestions for the movie?”

In all honesty, Jamie would say his mothers determination and passion for her job, was what made him want to go onto vet school; however, knowing how much he’d miss his family, like he did when his mom worked so much, he had small doubts. “you’ve been up forty hours, mom.” he stated with raised brows, a small huff of a chuckle passing his lips. his eyes lit up at the mention of quality time with family, nodding his head. “I completely agree. what’d you have in mind?”

“Forty-one considering I did have to shower before work, but I’ve gotten little naps here and there. The joys of working in the E.R., I’ll tell you.” Too many nights were like this, not having enough time to go home for five minutes, yet enough time to fit in a small nap. It was a little bit annoying, but that was the life. “Movie night? When’s the last night there’s been a family movie night? God, movie night sounds lame, but one sounds awesome.”

Jamie listened to his mother talk, shaking his head at her words. he knew she was good at her job, spending many hours at it; although he couldn’t help but worry about her working so much. “mom, you need to sit and take a breather. and a nap” he said with a smile, sighing. “is there anything you need that i can get you, or help with?”

her job was the best yet the worst all at the same time. she loved it, of course, but the time taken away from her to be with her family took a bit of a toll. “not a nap, not yet.” she shook her head, grinning at him. “however, some quality time with my family would be awesome.”

“How are you still awake, Mrs. Sawyer?”Callie questioned with a soft smile as she listened to her. “They must think highly of you if their working you this hard.” she mused a smile still on her face. “If you need me to i’d be happy to go on a coffee, or food run for you.”

“I’m honestly not really sure. I took about seven fifteen-ish minute naps in the on-call rooms, and I’m still debating on whether I should try for another one of give up at this point.” She laughed, shaking her head. “I’m just one of the only peds surgeons, that’s all.” She shook her head. “Oh, that really means a lot, but I’m not going to let you do that.”
