Finally saw The Little Mermaid.. here are my thoughts: It’s no surprise that Halle Bailey faultlessly embodies & captures the curiosity, wonder and longing of Ariel that we all know and love from the animated. She IS Ariel and her performance in the movie is my favorite. There’s no doubt about that. However, in the beginning of the film, with King Triton and his daughters, the CGI tends to get a little.. funky. You can tell it’s edited and the feel gets distorted — they want you to believe they are under the sea but the poor aforementioned CGI disrupts that. In some scenes, it gets alright and decent enough.. yet one wrong movement and you can tell everything is distorted again. I found myself wanting more of Ariel and Flounder’s relationship, but sadly, this film barely uses him. Despite Jacob Tremblay giving a good performance in voice acting. Ursula / Melissa McCarthy wins me over in some scenes, and then the other, she loses me. Her performance of Poor Unfortunate Souls IN MY OPINION, was placid. I did not feel any excitement or apprehension. Same with Prince Eric / Jonah Hauer-King.. his song felt unnecessary, performance was NOT my favorite, and did not feel like Eric to me. Some might love him, but we all differ in opinions and I did not like him in that role. Nothing against the actor, I just didn’t vision Eric like that. Also, despite this having a longer runtime than the animated, scenes surely feel rushed.. I wish they weren’t. Overall, Bailey’s performance lightens up the screen and gives impeccable acting — this is HER movie and I am very glad it is. The Little Mermaid, to me, was certainly better than the disgrace that was Maleficent.
