Otis kwame kye Quaicoe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exceptional portraits by Ghanan artist Otis kwame kye Quaicoe.
From Rubell Museum, where Otis was Artist-In-Residence in 2021: "Quaicoe creates empowering lush portraits of his family and friends where color and texture functions as a unique language to represent the character of the subject. During his time at the Rubell Museum, Quaicoe explored the phenomenon of twin births through double portraiture, on view in this exhibition. Viewed as an auspicious occurrence, the birth of twins emphasizes the innate link between the corporal and spiritual realm in Ga culture. Other portraits made during the residency present a new perspective of the American cowboy trope.

Ryan Pola’s “Full Bloom.”
On view at Beinart Gallery in Melbourne, Australia is artist Ryan Pola’s solo exhibition, “Full Bloom.”
The majority of the pieces double as a personification or representation of mythologies, in particular, Greek mythology. Grecian tales have fascinated Pola since he was a child. The people depicted in the drawings are used as a reflection of our own humanity.
Often the flora present in the drawings is in some process of consuming the figure. Whether this is a symbiotic or parasitic relationship is inconsequential: Pola is exploring a process of being at peace with something much larger than himself as an individual.
Pola has begun to really consider time and space in his works, as well as our connection to one another and nature. Works like “Afloat Styx” and “Liminal” draw on the notion of passing between one life and the next. The river Styx was the passage through which souls traversed into the afterlife. “Afloat Styx” is calm and still while exploring ideas that are tumultuous and ever changing. “Liminal” explores both cyclical decay and rebirth and the idea that we eventually return to that from which we came. It is an embrace of transitory being.
This series was created as a response to Pola’s infatuation with and appreciation of the coming of spring. He wanted the works to be bursting and hungry, and many of the florals included in the works were captured from what was blooming in his garden or heavily focused on appreciating Australian native flora.
Butterflies are a common theme in many of the works. By nature these creatures transform from something else, through a process of chrysalis, and the enveloping of the figures in flowers is symbolic of that.
Ryan Pola, from Melbourne, focuses mostly on portraiture. Ever a student of the human condition and how we consider ideas of what is desirable and ideal, he enjoys exploring how we present ourselves to the world and what we believe about how our own identities have been constructed.

DRAGON76′s “Noroshi.”
Opening on Saturday, December 11th, 2021 at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, California is artist DRAGON76′s solo exhibition, “Noroshi.”
The title of this show, “Noroshi”, is the Japanese word meaning smoke signal, a fitting title as smoke is prominent in much of the artist’s work. Furthermore, just as smoke spreads, DRAGON76 hopes to spread his style and message through this collection of work, enveloping viewers in his own world.
His intricate and complex style is rooted in a combination of Graffiti, Manga and Ukiyo-e. The landscapes and figures are defined by black shadows, mimicking traditional block printing, and are superimposed upon textured layers of vibrant colour, creating a striking effect. His work connects to the soul of the viewer with a touch that is passionate and full of vitality, rooted in his street art past.
DRAGON76’s style is constantly evolving, producing work that focuses on the coexistence of conflicting things, such as past and future, stillness and movement, justice and evil and this show is no exception.

Wang Qiang.
Paintings of the present by Chinese artist Wang Qiang.
“Wang Qiang’s painting skills,” says White Space Gallery - His representation in Beijing, “were honed through abstraction and minimalism. He rationally constructs modern artistic notions with a unique individual style. In his works the colors of real life are brightened and purified, compressed and simplified. A credible sense of live, on-the-spot presence and a refreshing sense of transparence inject an incredible flow of air into the picture, demonstrating a sensory experience that’s even more bewildering than the past or the future.”
