The blog of a Time-Traveller

So there is this girl. She is eighteen and finally in college. She is a typical brunette who wears glasses. A good tad shy. Very honest. She loves drawing in a style you'd often find in anime, but also lacks experience at coloring and shading. She loves writing but still ponders on the idea of posting anything publicly yet (Did you ever look back on what you wrote as your 14 year-old self and wanted to gouge your eyes out?) Video games have always had a place in her heart... if you ignore the fact that she is the worst player. No, seriously, it's just embarrassing. That girl is also trash. And by that meaning, Phandom and fandom trash. Her trash taste varies between Phan, Danganronpa, animes (Assassination Classroom, PMMM, No game No life, etc.) and Undertale. She likes the idea of doing 2D or 3D animation in the future but is also curious about the numerous possibilities opened to her elsewhere. Enjoy her blog, My blog.

hmmm anyway rb this if ur a bkdk and a bnha fan

Lov being a bkdk and bnha fan because bkdk is a good ship made of respect and growth and trust and two people starting with a division between them and learning and growing. Bkdk is one of the most popular ships for a reason y'all, it’s because it’s GOOD and compelling. They as characters could not function without each other and to try to simplify their relationship as “they hate each other” is simply disrespectful to horikoshi and bnha as a whole

So, as a bnha and bkdk fan, both are good and beautiful in this chile’s.

Bakugo bullying, threatening and abusing izuku to the point of telling izuku to die on a daily basis and izuku probably would have killed himself if all might hadn’t given him one for all

Bakugo and izukus relationship isn’t hate it’s abuse. If you got out your head out of your ass you’d see that the reason it’s popular is because of assholes fetishizing abuse and violence. There’s no respect from bakugo, There’s no growth between them.

Alot of people, including myself, see some aspects of themselves in izuku and him shipped with his fucking abuser shouldn’t be that popular

bakudekus quit fetishizing violence challenge

bakudekus stop drawing “romantic” art of bakugo harming midoriya challenge

and i cannot emphasize this part enough-

bakudekus stop making content of bakugo literally raping midoriya challenge

Kid, child, let me refute that in the way my classes taught me. Or at least do my best. Since, you know, I’m wiser than you. Not the wisest. But wiser. I want to shed some light here.

Don’t project your trauma into Izuku. Or Todoroki. Or Bakugou. Or any character. Not like this. Ever. Catharsis is a volatile thing, as it is the expulsion of our natural violence through various methods. Some are healthy, like drawing and painting. Some aren’t. Like spreading mob hate mentality with tools such as the usage of the term ‘anti’ and the culture surrounding it. Projecting that violence onto a character who’s audience has many opinions on is not good for an emotionally unstable person. Emotions aren’t rational and blind us. You can’t analyze a character correctly solely with that. It has a logic beyond rationality and will convince you of things. Why do you think we hate ourselves so much? Because emotions of self-hate convince us as so. Why do we despise this character? Sometimes, it’s because, as you said, we projected your emotionally blinding trauma upon him and struggle to see anything but that. I do hope you manage to do that one day. I don’t want you to suffer from that, nor from the current veil stopping you from thinking logically.

More so, it is even more foolish to assume that the general audience surrounding this ship doesn’t have the moral compass to distinguish right from wrong, fiction from fantasy from reality from projection. We have our own demons. Some of us are traumatized and are trying to heal. Some of us understand personally the term ‘bully’ and ‘abuse’. Some of us don’t live with our parents anymore because of that. Don’t you dare assume who we are, thousands of strangers on the Internet. Some of us ate dirt and were absolutely horrid in the past and are struggling to become better people. You know what people like to relate to, that is realistic and true to real life? Change. We, as humans, are constantly changing. Going from a child to a teenager to an adult, from abuse to therapy to being okay, from abusers to realizing your mistakes to trying to become better for the sake of everyone and yourself, because we aren’t perfect and we live in a black and white world begging us to be exactly that. When nothing is ever black and white. It’s grey, everywhere. And that’s only one section of the people who like this ship. Some had good lives, have a good head on their shoulders, have a happy family and a smart mind, and the dynamic simply appeals to their tastes. Which is acceptable too. This is all simply to state the generalization is not rational, and by such, is forbidden from being used in any debate. Remember that.

Following that, Bakugou Katsuki is grey too, realizing slowly his own mistakes and trying to see past his worldview. Which is immensely difficult. Do you hate yourself? Then you understand how hard it is to see past this perticular worldview, right? It’s the same concept, but with different struggles, reactions and personality. It’s been established that we can’t stop changing throughout our lives, right? So, we can safely state that he is not unforgivable. He is a 15 year old kid. That’s what he is. A kid with issues trying to slowly develop into a mature adult. A kid who did shitty things trying to become better. He is changing, as everyone does. He is growing out of the views imposed by him by society and his personal environnement. I’m glad for him. I’m not condoning for his suicide spiel, nor for the actions he took to attempt at keeping Izuku away from his surroundings. I have a moral compass. But change is better than no change. We humans would go insane if everything remained in a status quo. Why do you think we are so hooked on the horror stories media likes to reveal to us? Or that we howl within ourselves when our abuser won’t see the truth? That’s why.

Now… Izuku. The one some of you current haters seem to like self-inserting yourselves in him like a guy self-inserting him in a harem ecchi show. Yeah, I said that. With you posting a banner insinuating a comparaison between gun violence and ships, I think is an okay comment. Anyways, he isn’t weak-willed, you’ve seen that. He is determined, will chuck himself in the line of fire (literally, see episode 1 for reference) for someone he cares about, and won’t bend to anyone telling him to stop pursuing his dreams or to go against his principles. He’s clever, analytical and has a heart of gold that he wears on his sleeve, crying and smiling whenever he feels like it. He’s amazing, we all know that.

So why do you like saying he was traumatized into the stature of a weak willed, scared kid?

Let’s analyze this! His shy demeanour? That’s natural. You’ve seen his mother, right? They’re both extremely similar in their jumpy attitude. You’ve seen how he first reacted to Iida, yes? Jumpy, nervous. Ochako? Same thing. He’s naturally someone with frantic nervous energy. Certainly, as you think, I won’t deny that his classmates’ mocking has influenced him, and so has Bakugou’s attitude on him. But, as I stated earlier, you do believe that Izuku is strong-willed and very determined, yes? That when he sets his mind on something, even as a child, he will never give up on it? (with his hero dream as an exemple) That he will work hard and meticulously for it? And it has been illustrated multiple times that Bakugou’s attacks were in an utilitarian objective rather than malicious; making sure that Izuku never follow him again, right? So we can make the easy decision that, had Izuku ceased talking to him as a child the first time Bakugou rejected him, the latter wouldn’t have chased him with harmful intentions, yes? Good.

Now, we can put down the following question: it has been established that Izuku followed Bakugou around… willingly, yes?

So. :)

Then. We can make the clear and rational statement that Izuku, despite Bakugou’s warnings, decided, all by himself, with no coercion whatsoever, that he would willingly persue Bakugou and admire him (it has been stated multiple times in the manga that he holds immense admiration and trust in Bakugou, even more so then All Might) as close as he can. And Bakugou, as it’s been decided, never pursued Izuku with true, evil, malicious intent, yes? He just wanted Izuku away from him. As such, by colliding these two opposing desires, we have Bakugou often trying to push Izuku down, only for the latter to spring back up with determined fire in his eyes. The result, is a fractured, broken friendship and a LOT of misunderstandings that were gained through the years. They’ve been mending it bit by bit throughout the manga though, and it’s genuinely nice to have that. Anime-wise, they’ve finally achieved a state of true rivalry, and Bakugou has began to open up his feelings to Izuku, as seen during their small conversation during the house arrest. It’s cathartic, in a healthy way, because it offers comfort that people can change for the better and be saved from a path of destruction. Praise be to character development.

Finally, the suicide thing. One: Horikoshi explained that he regretted that decision and that it was too harsh even for Bakugou. Two: you want him to apologize and get his ass whooped? The apology is gonna come at some point, I’m sure, and the ass whooping is already happening, mind you. It’s called fear-and-guilt-because-your-ex-friend-that-you-have-an-inferiority-and-superiority-complex-towards-got-a-hyper-strong-quirk-and-class-1-A-also-have-strong-quirks-that-are-used-cleverly-and-so-I-am-realizing-that-I-am-not-that-great-and-that-I-caused-the-fall-of-my-personal-hero-and-it’s-tearing-me-up-inside. Among things. He also got kidnaped, remember? And nearly beaten by someone who everyone considered frail. And didn’t truly win the tournament. And got trapped by a sludge monster in front of cameras, being saved by the guy you have an inferiority complex towards. And is now considered as a guy with villain potential by the masses. Karma is great. Pretty sure she sips tea with Character Development every Tuesday. So yeah, he’s getting it for saying that.

Midoryia isn’t a bully and abuse victim. Trust me. I know what abuse is. Wanna know how I know that? Sorry, I ain’t tellin’ a stranger on the Internet about it, you’ve proven to be untrustworthy for now. Text me back in ten years when you’re more mature and healed up.

Anyways, he isn’t. Izuku followed Bakugou willingly and knew the consequences. He’s fully aware of this. He knows Bakugou like nobody else too, we can state that. Allied with his mountain sized will strength, that we’ve most definitely said was true earlier, we can make the statement that Midoryia Izuku wouldn’t let himself fall into a state of trauma. He proves it too, the scene following Bakugou’s suicide speech showing Izuku actually scolding Bakugou rather than consider the words themselves. His admiration is stronger than any suicidal tendencies, which he doesn’t have. Because he’s strong minded. So no, don’t put the bully victim card on his face, it looks terrible and doesn’t belong there and won’t fit his forehead anyways. He has self-sacrificial tendencies, that is true. But that’s something in many personalities leaning towards altruistic values.

For the other person here. The rape/fetish/violence is first of all, found in every ship. You know that. It’s common sense. Secondly, I haven’t found much of that. Angst? Fluff? Hell yeah. And the mangakas behind these doujins, from what I gathered, have a good grasp on the two, so I trust them fully. Also, humans can’t live only with ‘healthy uwu soft and cute’ stuff. There’s a reason angst exists. Why horror exists. Why action movies with blood and violence exist. Why Greek tragedies were so popular and why they were played during the Dionysus festivals in Antic Greece. We, legitimately, fundamentally, need to expulse violence somewhere. Those are healthy means, most of the time. It’s either that or self-destruction, and the destruction of our environment. Take your pick. Hell, I can even send you my notes about the class I’m taking on the subject, I don’t mind that. They’re in French tho, so fair warning.

So, to the best of my ability. I’ve refuted all your points, and accompanied my words with sarcastic joking commentary. I’m actually an optimist, you know? I believe that you can genuinely grow to cease making these kinds of statements and posting these kinds of banners, at some point, after you sort your life out and seek help, if you don’t have it already. (you did mention relating to the nonexistent bully aspect of Izuku so this is my assumption) so I’ll just leave this, and predicting you’ll hate me after this, I’ll just consider this a job well done and be on my way. You might forget this but your subcounscious won’t. You might change in subtle ways because of it then. So either way, I’ve helped out. That alone is enough for me. Thanks for reading!

I was reading this article about how much work and heart hiromu arakawa put into writing fullmetal alchemist and Silver spoon and I’m honestly so impressed???

-she talked with war veterans and people with disabilities to accurately depict characters with those backgrounds

-she also researched military corruption extensively

-she fought to bring in more female characters with her editors who opposed it

-she has told her readers that there is no shame in leaving an emotionally toxic situation and you should never feel guilty for it

-she based the situation with the ishvalan people off of a real displaced indigenous group called the ainu people in hokkaido to raise awareness of their situation

-she criticizes the notion of self sacrifice being a noble thing especially since it’s such a prevalent theme in most shonen manga

-she worked on a farm with a lot of hardworking women and wanted her work to reflect just how complex real women can be rather than overdone anime stereotypes

-she has stated that she thinks there is value in not repressing anger in the face of injustice, and she thinks it’s good to use that anger in constructive ways

-she has emphasized in her story that you don’t always have to forgive the people who hurt you

-she worked on and alongside several other manga one shots, illustrations, character designs, anime adaptions, movie adaptions, and light novels all while having three kids over the course of her career

I don’t even think this is everything I read but hiromu arakawa is a goddamn badass

Vitka Kempner (1920-2012): Avenger of the Holocaust

Sorry, I know that was insanely long. At least I only post these like once a month. It was also very difficult to write. As you can imagine, there’s a ton I had to leave out, even long as this is. Full entry here.

Art notes and whatnot behind the cut. As an FYI: I will be traveling for about a month and a half, so I won’t be updating very frequently. But for people in Portland: I will be at Rose City Comic Con - and to people in the UK, I will be at Thought Bubble UK.

A lot of the wording and phrasing of this makes my skin crawl and the fact that you didn’t bother tagging it as antisemitism speaks volumes

Hi! A couple things:

  • I tagged this with “cw: antisemitism” as soon as I saw your post. In haste, I’d originally thought “cw: holocaust” and “cw: racism” would cover it.
  • Reading about all of the antisemitic acts made my skin crawl too. Writing about them was much worse.
  • My surname is Hebrew. I am descended from 18 generations of rabbis. One of my earliest memories is of my elementary school principal – I went to a Jewish elementary school (in Kentucky!) – showing his concentration camp tattoos to all the new students on the first day of school. In fact, here’s a picture of me from that time period:

You may note that my prayer book says Israel Porath instead of Jason. That’s my Hebrew name, which I inherited from my rabbi great-grandfather

In conclusion: I would ask that you do not accuse me of antisemitism.

really tho, and this is just me being rational, if you’re honestly taking the characterization of their relationship in the movie as canon, then their relationship has taken a fucking nose dive since then. if bakugou thanked kiri in the movie, then why did bakugou not only not thank kiri for having a hand in rescuing him but also didn’t even admit to getting rescued. if they’re so attached at the hip in the movie, then why did bakugou sit next to tokoyami on the bus to the training camp and not kiri. why did bakugou not listen to him during the license exam. why have they barely even interacted since the license exam. why is bakugou portrayed to be just as close with kaminari.

if you really think this is proof that bakugou and kiri have this special relationship offscreen, why do their onscreen interactions not reflect that

I’ve watched the Dead Apple movie, from the bungou stray dogs franchise, and there was a Soukoku scene that was clearly pandering to the shippers (you know which one) I expect it to be the same here. Dead Apple was a bit convoluted at places, but still amazing, so I think the movie’s still gonna be pretty neat, despite the obvious fanservice. I’m chill with kiribaku but… eh. I’m not naive enough as to take these scenes as ‘OWO CANON KING SHIP WIG’ Shit doesn’t work like that mate, both for kiribaku and my own otp. It’s gonna be only headcanons until the creator EXPLICITELY states otherwise.

antis are so obsessed w/ kiri being “canonically gay” and how kr//bk is “canon”,,, but the rlly funny thing is how the majority of them don’t give a fuck about bakugou at all. like, they just don’t. they glorify kiri as the sunshine boy and shit all over bkg and call him trash, garbage, and villain-like.

and what makes it even more obvious is when antis lose their shit about anyone hc-ing kiri as anything but gay (literally, it’s gotten to the point where they say you’re homophobic or “blind” if you hc him as bi) but when it comes to bkg, everyone falls silent. you’ve got “don’t follow me if you think kiri isn’t gay” in their abouts but there’s no mention of bkg’s orientation at all, even though he’s the one they’re shipping kiri with. it’s because their care for bkg doesn’t extend further than “kiri’s crush who we tolerate” and that inevitably makes your portrayal of bkg (in metas, fanfic, and fan content in general) extremely bias and quite frankly, shit.

i mean, think about it: how can they put so much effort into harassing others over kiri’s orientation, but not bakugou’s? why is it kirimina stans are shot down for being homophobic but kacchako stans aren’t nearly targeted to that extent? why is there a ratio of one “bakugou’s gay actually lol” to ten or twenty “kiri is gay and if you don’t think so, you’re homophobic as shit”?

it’s because these antis don’t give a singular fuck about bakugou. to them, he’s nothing but an abusive fixer-upper and the antis who claim they “stan” him constantly call him terrible, trash, garbage, etc. or even worse, they just settle on stanning an idealized version of bkg who doesn’t exist without kiri. god forbid you give him fucking development that doesn’t revolve around a crush, since that would mean admitting that he could actually be on good terms with others outside of bakusquad, like, oh i don’t know, midoriya. but rip i forgot, bkg and deku need to “stay as far away from each other as possible” which leaves only one other person to pair him with.

yeah, interesting how that works.

Bakugou is a pure GOLDEN character when it comes to fanfictions and headcannons. There’s literally so much scope, there’s so much you could write about him - a fanfiction about him apologising, or about the class learning that he’s not so bad. There could be so many headcannons about friendships, relationships, etc about bakugou.

Yet the antis always make him out to be “a love interest for kirishima”. There’s no plot, no storyline, nothing about him. Just about how he makes kirishima smile n kirisima’s crush and shit.

The minute bakugou’s shipped with literally ANYONE other than Kirishima, the relationship is “abusive” and “impossible” but kiribaku is “soo cute” and “precious”.

fucking own up to what you’re doing. Stop pretending to be all “pro-kiribaku” when you’re just pro-kirishima. Admit it.

If you’ve never read my initial theory post, please do yourself a favor and check that shit out. It is a foundation for the theory that, regrettably, was missing a lot of information that I wasn’t able to get to until I was able to do a reread of the series, plus I wanted to wait for the series to develop a little further. The original post was made right after “Deku vs Kacchan 2” was released, so we’ve had about 30 chapters of development. You might be wondering how on earth 3k words isn’t enough to make my point the first time, but here I am yet again!

I might sound crazy, but believe me when I say… I am the MOST serious.

I’ll just start this off by axing off a HUGE group of characters right off the bat: the traitor is not a teacher, has to be from class A and cannot be from any other class, and is not a “minor” member of class A, such as Mineta or Sero. I am assuming that those characters who have been somewhat involved in the main plotline of the story are those that have the potential to be the traitor. After cutting it down from that, I’ll just run through specific instances.

Of course it’s not Midoriya, or the story would make no sense; same with Bakugou due to having been kidnapped. I’m cutting out Iida, Todoroki, and Momo for their involvement in helping to rescue Bakugou in the AfO arc, and also because they all have a family history in heroics.  Froppy I’m cutting out more because of the way the story is written makes her a really awkward fit as traitor. Denki is one of the theories I’ve seen floating around, but I think that from the most recent arc, there’s a little too much leaning away from Denki having the capacity for being a traitor.

Kirishima, although I definitely wouldn’t be too surprised if it did turn out to be him, still doesn’t fit the bill for me. My initial reason was that Kirishima obviously wants to save Bakugou from the villains during that particular arc - he initiates the entire thing. While even despite on that, I was open to the idea of Kirishima being the traitor, but thinking on it there are two other reasons I can’t sink my teeth in. The first is that Kirishima is just… so honest?? and also Bakugou’s kinda-probably best friend? If the villains really wanted Bakugou to join the villain side, Kirishima probably would have known, and also he could have easily spoken to Bakugou about STUFF and weeded out whether or not Bakugou was really villain material. He also strikes me as honest enough to bide his time with Bakugou and then when the time came, literally just saying ‘hey, Bakugou join me on the villains’ side.’

My second reason is crucial: Kirishima is just not AS close to Midoriya as pretty much every other main character. While I’m sure Midoriya would be upset if Kirishima was the traitor, it wouldn’t have the same effect as a lot of the other main characters in the series. The shock factor for Midoriya, appropriately, would be more like “oh no, how could you?”  and I don’t think that’s what Horikoshi wants. Good traitor reveals are big, painful, and close to the heart. They’re someone who the main character trusts, and a lot of the time, a character who’s been there from the start.

So who is left?

Friendly reminder not to put ships or fanart in the #緑谷と爆豪でタッグ点灯 tag! Even if it doesn’t affect international fans, it affects Japanese fans. We must be mindful that not every place is the same, not every place is like here where it’s okay for fans to just shove their fanart and shipping stuff right in front of the official’s faces.

(original tweet here: https://twitter.com/magari7ri/status/1021724442819420160?s=19=19) and the OP explains it a bit more in the comments

it’s by this artist here, and they don’t allow reposts!! so if you see it floating around, don’t reblog it

(thank you to @chisakai for pointing this out to me!!!)

edit: ALSO please don’t attack anyone over this!! chances are, most of the people who reposted/reblogged it had no idea; i know i didn’t until it was pointed out to me. the art looked totally official, and the watermark was so tiny, it was hard to notice.

for most people, it was an honest mistake, so please don’t attack anyone for this. they likely had no idea. please, just kindly inform people if you see someone who is unawares.

Fun fact: Cheetahs only attack prey that runs

jesus that is good to know.

Yup, that’s the point you just stay still and let it do whatever the fuck it wants that doesn’t involved you getting eaten.

REALLY FUN FACT for big cats cheetahs are fucking docile as shit

my grandfather ran a cheetah sanctuary in south africa and he’d just lie with them and sleep among them and they’d rub against him and chirp at him they’re big fucking babies

Another Fun Fact: Cheetahs are incredibly nervous animals. One of the (many) reason’s they’re going extinct is that cheetahs are so sensitive and nervous, some of them are literally too nervous to breed. Others will breed, but stress themselves out so much, they’ll lose their cubs.

So zoos with breeding programs had to figure out how to make cheetahs comfortable enough to first of all, get laid and secondly - not spazz themselves into miscarrying.

So what’d they do?
They gave the cheetah’s their very own Service Dogs!

The dogs make them feel safe, protected and secure!

this post just got so much better

With nothing but a broken mp3 player, 18¢, a “fun-sized” bag of M&Ms, and a wallet full of gift cards that may or may not be expired, describe how you saved humanity from extinction.

You put your earphones on while making your way to the highest building of the town. You knew you would find him here. You raised your head: black clouds were already forming in the sky, lightning flashing here and there, thunder making the ground shake occasionally.

In your ears, your broken mp3 player was playing the same song over and over. You had never been able to repair the damn thing - at least you liked the song. You couldn’t increase or lower the volume, so you could still hear the thunder as well as the people screaming and running around you, the sirens roaring in the distance, the howl of the wind; but all still quite faint under the music.

You sighed, ran your free hand into your hair (the other was holding your ‘fun-sized’ bag of M&Ms). Humanity was going to end soon.

You reached the building. The doors had been torn apart, surely in one of his access of rage, and you slipped in easily, walking carefully through the destroyed halls up to the elevators.

“He better not have wrecked them too,” you grumbled. That building was high as fuck. You didn’t want to take the stairs.

After two fails and a lot of cursing, you finally found a functioning elevator, which took you to the rooftop. You palmed the pockets of your jeans during the ride, pinched your lips. You thought you had taken your phone, but no, that was your gift-card wallet. Most of those which may or may not be expired. You had absolutely no idea, because you tended to forget you had gift-cards way too easily.

That was a shame, there were some interesting stuff in there. You promised yourself to use them if humanity wasn’t extinct tonight.

At last, the rooftop. You stepped out of the elevator, yelping a little when the strength of the wind nearly knocked you off your feet. Recovering your balance after a bit of struggle, you squinted your eyes and caught sight of him at the edge of the roof. In front of him, the entire city lay, completely at his mercy, covered already by the dark clouds he had summoned, which would unleash their rage when he would be done charging energy. And it would just be the beginning - nothing compared to what was expecting humanity the second after the storm would have started his work of destruction.

You didn’t know what he had planned after the storm. He liked surprises. You kinda betted on a flood, but you weren’t too sure.

The wind made each step complicated, and it took you five minutes to reach him, despite doing your best. You were a little scared to be thrown off the roof, but hey, you weren’t going to crawl up to him either.

You gently tapped on his shoulder.

He turned around slowly, having already noticed your presence (and he had done nothing to help you? Asshole), and looked at you with those eyes you had never gotten used to: old, so very old, filled with ancient power gathered throughout millenaries, haunted and tired and pulling you in like a void.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

You dug into your pocket, swore a few times while searching, then proudly handed him your 18¢. He took them with a raise of eyebrow.

“I owed you 18¢ for that coffee the other day, remember?” you smiled enthusiastically. “I didn’t have enough coins. You gave me some.”

“It’s only 18¢.”

“I always pay my debts. How dare you underestimate me.”

Finally, he cracked up a smile. “You say ‘the other day’, but that might be a bit more than that. It was three years ago. The first day we met.”

“Yeah, took me a while to get exactly 18¢. Damn, I use coins a lot.”

He laughed, the millenaries-old eyes taking a slightly fond light, then turned back to the city and his work of destruction. You stepped beside him, handed him an earpiece. By habit, he took it absent-mindedly and put it on, watching the dark sky with a certain nostalgia while listening to the song that had been playing over and over on that damn broken mp3 player.

“You have M&Ms,” he then said.

“I’m surprised you hadn’t noticed them sooner, for a god. It should be a must, you know. M&Ms noticing skills. The world would be a better place.”

He snickered. “The world… it can’t be worse anyway.”

“Ah, yeah. That’s what this-” - you designated the brooding sky - “-is about.”

“The world is rotten. You know it too. Humanity is broken.”

His shoulders slumped, his composed mask falling down. You reached out to him, held his hand. He held back tightly.

“I’ve been here for millenniums. I’ve tried to help them for so long. But humans… have always been too broken, from the start. Genocides, wars, murders, stealing, rapes, poverty, corruption, cruelty, erasure, intolerance, extremism, oppression, discrimination, atrocities, ruins, tears, blood, pain…” He didn’t finish, because the list would be endless. You didn’t look at him, but you knew his eyes were filled with sorrow, and his voice was raspy. “I’ve seen it all. It was there from the start. It has never stopped. Has even been worse, sometimes. There would be so much to do, to fix the world as it is now.”

“Yeah.” There was really nothing else you could say. “I know.”

“Humanity cannot be saved.”

“I know.”

“That’s why I have to destroy it. If there is no humanity… there are no humans to cause harm.”

There was a long silence, during which you both listened to the music on repeat, holding each other’s hand, looking at the city which was soon going to be reduced to nothing.

“But it’s not right,” you declared. “Humans cause harm, and others get hurt. Are you going to also destroy those who deserve to live a better life? Those who have been hurt? Those who suffer? Those who haven’t even gotten the chance to know good things? Wouldn’t it be unfair?”

“Yes,” he replied sadly. “But it would be for the greater good. Humans… humans are just hopeless.”

“I’m also human.”

You turned your head towards him. He was looking at you, expression bitter.

“You’re different.”

“No, I’m not. I grew up in this world too. I am not the worst human, but not the best either.”

“You’re not rotten,” he hissed, maybe a bit too aggressive.

You didn’t back off. “If humanity is born rotten, then yes, I am.”

You confronted his ancient stare with the same quiet and patient determination which had carried your steps here. In the end, he sighed, and averted his eyes while letting go of your hand.

“Yes,” he said tiredly, “you are.”

You smiled, opened the bag of M&Ms, put it between you two. He took one.

“But if everyone was like you, it would make things easier.”

“Come on. I’m already giving you troubles. It would be a mess. Everyone would forget their gift-cards.”

He rolled his eyes. “Don’t tell me you found more.”

You beamed, and took out your gift-card wallet out of your pocket, opening it to show him what you had. He glanced at it, and ate another M&Ms to hide his little smile. It seemed to you the wind was weaker, now.

“There are always more,” you winked.

“I bet most of them are expired.”

“But not all.”

You grinned happily, while he shook his head; but he wasn’t even bothering to hide his smile, now, though it was a somehow sad one.

“Humanity is like a wallet full of gift-cards which may or may not be expired,” you said. “Most of them are probably useless by now, but some of them are not. And just for those, you keep the entire wallet.”

“… you’re too positive.”

You saw the distress in his eyes, the despair, the ages-old tiredness - and it all made you want to take him in your arms and never let him go. But you didn’t.

Not yet.

“It’s like 18¢: it’s almost nothing, but it’s still something, and it still has some worth. It’s like a fun-sized M&Ms bag: small, and there will be some you don’t like, and some you do, and it gives you a smile. It’s like a broken mp3 player: damaged, but still working somehow. Broken, but not beyond repair.”

The first tear rolled down his cheek. You followed it with your eyes, followed how it traced the line of his jaw before being taken away by the wind. He turned his face away. You didn’t lose your smile.

“Your infamous bad metaphors,” he croaked out.

“Those are comparisons. And they are good.”

He shook his head lightly, not to lose the earpiece, then turned back to you, unable to stop weeping.

“And what if I don’t destroy this world? What then? What happens tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow, one more person will be able to smile. One more person will be able to take a step towards healing. One more person will be able to be happy, and make other people happy. One more person will have the courage to accept themselves. One more person will accept others for what they are. One more person will live beautiful things. One more person will learn their lesson and become a better person. One more person will be kind.”

You couldn’t help the enthusiasm in your voice. There were many things he could answer, but he didn’t - maybe because he already knew it would be useless, against you.

“Those people make me so happy. Them, and all the others who make me believe in this world no matter how rotten it might be. They’re giving me courage.” You looked at the city in front of you, made a wide arm gesture towards it. “Look! There are so many people here, and some of them have struggled so hard to get up this morning, but they did it, and they’re still doing their best to find happiness! Don’t you feel proud? Also–”

You didn’t finish.

He wrapped his arms around you, buried his face in the crook of his neck, and cried, shattered and exhausted, while the wind around you slowly calmed down.

You leaned your cheek against the top of his head, held his arm.

“I want to go home,” he whispered. “Your home. Where it’s safe.”

“Sure. Let’s look up which of those gift-cards we can still use online tonight, ‘kay? My treat. You get whatever you want. And I still have some M&Ms at home, don’t worry. We’ll also be able to listen to something else than that song. Well, if you want. I mean, it’s a good song. I like it.”

He laughed between two sobs, holding you even tighter. He didn’t answer. It sounded like he couldn’t, like he was crying too much to formulate words for now.

It started raining; but the sky had cleared, and the wind was a breeze, and the thunder and lightning had faded away with his will to end the world. You welcomed the rain happily.

“It’s okay,” you said. It really was. “It’s okay. You’re okay. You’re gonna be okay, I promise. I’ll be there. You’re making me so proud too.”

“How can you have… so much faith?” he asked, voice strangled.

You smiled.

“People can surprise you in a good way, if you give them the chance.”
