Writing/ Journal Therapy
My favorite method of therapeutic services is Writing/ Journal therapy.
Centered around creative writing to express emotional trauma, writing therapy can guide individuals in personal recovery in ways entirely unique to their lived experience.
Writing therapy is a form of expressive therapy, and uses writing and processing words individually as an avenue of recovery.
This method has been proven especially effective in mental illnesses including:
Post traumatic stress disorder
Anxiety
Depression
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Grief and loss
Chronic illness issues
Substance abuse
Eating disorders
Interpersonal relationship issues
Communication skill issues
Low self-esteem
To get started, find the best platform for yourself.
A fancy journal, a cheap notebook, an online journal page, a blog, etc.
Sometimes to peak interest in writing, personalizing your platform can be especially helpful.
A great tip to get a flow for your writing is to use the “WRITE, rule of 5″
(provided by journaltherapy.com)
“W – What do you want to write about? What’s going on? How do you feel? What are you thinking about? What do you want?
R – Review or reflect on it. Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths. Focus. You can start with “I feel…” or “I want…” or “I think…” or “Today….” or “Right now…” or “In this moment…”
I –  Investigate your thoughts and feelings. Start writing and keep writing. Follow the pen/keyboard. If you get stuck or run out of juice, close your eyes and re-center yourself. Re-read what you’ve already written and continue writing.
T – Time yourself. Write for 5-15 minutes. Write the start time and the projected end time at the top of the page. If you have an alarm/timer on your phone that is a great tool!
E – Exit smart by re-reading what you’ve written and reflecting on it in a sentence or two: “As I read this, I notice—” or “I’m aware of—” or “I feel—”. Note any action steps to take.”
No matter what platform you choose, protect your privacy! Unless you are fully comfortable being transparent in front of an audience, you want to be able to write freely and without any fear of judgment, this is where the therapeutic side comes in.
Writing/ Journal therapy is great direction for those who find it hard to voice their challenges, and offers people ways to tell their story, and even reflect on all of their progress.

Misconceptions about my mental illness: PTSD
What I find very interesting are the things people seem to think and or expect of someone living with this disorder.
Be honest.
When you think of someone with PTSD, what do you associate it with?
I will say even myself, when I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or “PTSD,” my first thought was “Isn’t that just for people in the military?” This is an all too common thought regarding individuals suffering from that disorder.
PTSD accourding to Google Definitions Is defined as:
“A condition of persistent mental and emotional stress occurring as a result of injury or severe psychological shock, typically involving disturbance of sleep and constant vivid recall of the experience, with dulled responses to others and to the outside world “
Now where do we see “military” in this definition? No where, because anyone, with any kind of trauma, can experience this disorder.
The reputation of PTSD and the military is deeply seeded due to of course the amount of trauma a military serviceman may experience or witness during their time of service, and of course further perpetuated in pop culture all throughout history; don’t believe me, watch Jacobs Ladder... both versions!
If you live with PTSD, this simply means you are a warrior, of any kind.
Your scars are deep, but they are a symbol of your survival.
This diagnosis changed my life, and the way I viewed my life in general; in good ways and bad.
But I believe the first step to healing, is to know what you are healing from.
