for an average karasuno high school student, when they look at the karasuno volleyball club, it doesn't take a lot to see who would be dating first. some might say it would be one of the third years or even one of the first years. some bet that kiyoko and suga would probably date before they graduate or how yamaguchi and yachi looked cute when they studied together.

but karasuno wasn't prepared. no, they weren't. because even if some see everyone in the karasuno volleyball club as dateable, the one they least expect to get a girlfriend was the first out of all of them to have one.

you see, when tanaka texted how he had a girlfriend in the group chat after suga and daichi announced their relationship, good for them, but he hadn't really thought about it much. he has a girlfriend, what's so surprising about that? really, he was confused about what the fuss was about when the others promptly freaked out and asked him lots of questions. he quickly shot them down when y/n, his girlfriend of one year, texted him asking him to call on facetime. of course he'd stop talking to the guys and go talk to his girlfriend.

the day after, the day went on normally but he could always feel eyes on him and when he turned, he'd be looking at noya, who was staring at him all day now. "dude?"

noya narrowed his eyes but did not say anything, so tanaka sighed and left him to go to the gym for practice. his phone buzzed as y/n texted him to remind him of their date this weekend. he grinned, answering her and putting his phone away. he halted in his steps when noya blocked his way. his best friend's face looked downright hilarious but tanaka could see how serious he seemed so biting back his laugh, he said, "hey, dude. what is it?"

"don't dude me!" tanaka whispered 'okay' as his eyes looked away, confused for a moment while noya continued. "you didn't tell me you had a girlfriend!"

"it just didn't come up!" tanaka answered. "what! i swear, dude! you know i tell you everything!"

"but it just slipped your mind to tell me about y/n?" noya had his arms crossed, eyes narrowed at tanaka. tanaka sighed, scratching the back of his neck as he stared at him. god, this was hard. and like, it really honestly slipped his mind to tell anyone in the team. he was content with having y/n for himself that it never occurred to him that he never told anyone, even noya, about it.

"i know. bro, i'm sorry. but, maybe we could talk after practice? when we're sure daichi doesn't kill us with the extra laps once we're late."

"shit."

"yeah." they both ran at a faster pace than usual, scared to face the wrath of their captain. it was a collective rule that existed in the club, never be late or face daichi's wrath. kidding, but no, really, his training regimen was hard enough with coach ukai as it is, it's really best to get on daichi's good side.

"we're here!" they shouted, immediately tossing their bags to the locker room and changing into their jerseys for practice. what tanaka didn't immediately notice was the members stopping as they waited for tanaka, still obviously hung up on what happened in their group chat the night before.

tanaka, oblivious as ever, started his warm ups, glad that daichi wasn't screaming when they arrived. he closed his eyes as he stretched, but opened them when he felt uncomfortable like he was being stared at. and stared at, he was. 

"uh, did i miss anything?" tanaka asked, standing up straight in fear as he looked at daichi. without prompting, he bowed and dropped to his knees. "i'm sorry!"

"tanaka, you need to stand." suga said, wincing. he was beside daichi and exchanged a couple of glances as they tried to get the other to talk to tanaka.

"alright, suga-san!"

tanaka stood up, eyebrows furrowing as he looked at them while they still stared at him. before anyone could utter a word, coach ukai arrived, took one look at them, and said, "stop staring at each other and get to practicing!"

tanaka was grateful for this momentary distraction. he was not as oblivious as they thought he was. well, maybe a little. but, he realized that noya's interaction earlier was probably connected to the reactions the team were having when they stared at him. he grinned, remembering your text, not unnoticed by the team, who all exchanged worried glances.

to be honest, it's not that they don't believe that tanaka could have a girlfriend. he has the looks and he's a great senpai…it's probably the fact that he was supposedly the first one out of them to get a girlfriend. they were happy, sure! but if this y/n is just no one or that she's just using tanaka, the team would, of course, be worried about him.

like right now, just after practice, they watched tanaka look lovesick as he opened his phone, seeming to text someone, y/n? he even ignored kiyoko, who looked relieved but confused at the same time. was he even the tanaka they knew? it seemed petty to tanaka that they seemed so adamant that he was lying. was it that impossible to see him as someone committed?

he sent another text to y/n as he listened to coach ukai's announcements. his smile not fading as coach ukai announced something about training with shiratorizawa, which pretty much made even coach ukai confused. but, then again, he knew not to ask the kids about pretty much anything. not again, definitely not again.

coach ukai shuddered when he remembered the milk incident last summer. yep, not again.

y/n grinned as she texted tanaka, her boyfriend. she fought back the warmth in her cheeks. even after a year, the thought of dating someone as great as tanaka still made her feel giddy. tendou walked beside her on her right with ushijima walking on her left as they walked out the gym after their volleyball practice.

"is it the boyfriend?" tendou grinned as he raised his eyebrows. "gonna ever introduce us, y/n?"

"maybe someday." y/n winked. "but not today. well, actually it really depends on his schedule, i guess."

"y/n," y/n looked at ushijima, eyes wide in question. "do they go to shiratorizawa?"

she laughed, patting ushijima's arms. "no, ushi."

he hummed. "maybe they should go to shiratorizawa."

tendou cackled at his best friend as y/n shook her head, laughing beside him. "i doubt that. i think he hates this school."

ushijima's head cocked to the right, eyes confused. "but you go to this school, yes?"

"yes," y/n nodded, smiling. "but it's different for him, i guess. he and i really didn't get along well when we first met, if you guys must know."

"ooh!" tendou's eyes sparkled. "i never really heard how you guys met, considering i also don't know the guy."

"it's not really that exciting." y/n said, as they reached the gate. "are you guys gonna come over for homework, then?"

tendou's grin widen while ushijima simply nodded. "of course! now tell me how you lovebirds met."

y/n huffed a laugh and started as they walked home. "well, we actually met just at the start of my first year in shiratorizawa."

y/n was walking home, her eyes trained on her phone as she looked over their training for the volleyball club. she started being their manager just a few months ago, lucky that she was accepted so readily in the club, but maybe it was also because of the glowing recommendation of her cousin who was a senior in the club. 

she didn't notice someone directly in her path, who was also distracted with something on his phone. she huffed when they bumped into each other, cursing quietly as the guy screamed, "hey!"

their eyes met and no, there was no instant spark for her. for tanaka, he was flustered, he admitted to y/n when they talked about it. but then, his eyes zeroed in on the shiratorizawa jacket hanging on her shoulders and she noticed the karasuno keychain on his duffel bag. he scoffed, offering a lighthearted, "sorry."

"could you be any more sincere?" y/n said, her face scrunching up in confusion because how could a guy be so rude!

"i mean, you bumped into me as well and i don't hear any apology."

y/n huffed, standing her ground. "well, i'm not gonna say sorry after that half-assed apology, crow."

"wow, and i'm gonna need to do it for you, oh mighty eagle?"

y/n was about to retort back when someone interrupted them, "could you two make up and make out somewhere else that's not in the middle of the sidewalk?"

y/n's cheeks warmed as tanaka blushed, noticing how many stopped to look at them. shrugging off the attention, y/n pulled him out of the way, apologizing to the others in an attempt to distract herself from the warmth of his hand in hers.

"look." they stopped somewhere, not the sidewalk. y/n sighed, closing her eyes. "i'm sorry. i was just cranky about something about school. i should've just apologized."

he seemed to notice her sincerity and sighed as well. "i'm sorry too. i really don't know what came over me. i'm not that rude at all." he gestured widely, making y/n chuckle.

"maybe we could get coffee sometime to talk?" she asked, not immediately noticing the insinuation and before she could, tanaka grinned.

"what, already asking me on a date? damn, you eagles swoop in fast, huh?"

y/n groaned, face wincing. "god, what the hell. i hate you crows, go back to wherever you crows came from."

y/n walked past him, rolling her eyes. tanaka grinned, watching her back. he shouted, "whatever you say, miss eagle!"

"and then we somehow met up more times over a few more months and we hit it off, i guess? he courted me for a few months, then i said yes. and we've been together since."

y/n turned to her friends as they arrived home. "see, told you, not really that exciting!"

tendou grinned, ruffling her hair despite her protests. "cute, but you're fraternizing with the enemy."

"we have a practice match with them in a few weeks, right?" ushijima asked, face still stoic.

"shut up, tendou, and yes, ushi. we do." y/n glared at tendou but smiled at ushijima. "now, enough of that. we need to study and then you guys need to help me with your training."

now, in hindsight, you can't really blame the karasuno volleyball club when they don't believe it when tanaka boasts about his girlfriend, y/n. even the name sounded so pretentious, so made up. who even knows a y/n? not them, no.

but, tanaka? he doesn't care. so what, his girlfriend is someone he's really proud of. when he met y/n, he was instantly enamored with her. how could someone like her be so annoying but lovable at the same time? sure, they were instantly enemies when they realized that they were from opposite schools, and with their volleyball clubs being enemies, it only cemented the fact that they're supposed to be enemies. not…this? but, tanaka doesn't regret the fact that he pursued y/n when he realized that he didn't only like annoying y/n, but he also wanted to be with her and go on dates with her and…kiss her.

god, does he want to kiss her every time. it's no secret that tanaka was clingy and affectionate, and overall, very showy when he likes someone. they saw it with kiyoko, but tanaka with y/n? he swore that y/n had stars and hung the whole world for him and always looked very much in love with her.

however, to the karasuno volleyball club? it all seemed like an elaborate ruse for tanaka to prove something. but, then again, maybe it could do them some good to believe in tanaka. at some point, they will know whether it was true or not, but for now, they knew tanaka and what's important was that he was happy.

so, when tanaka got sick and supposedly missed someone who went to their school, who was from shiratorizawa, he almost laughed in their faces as they all pretty much thought how pretty y/n was. they didn't know her name as y/n knew what was happening from her boyfriend, opting to ask takeda to do her a favor. takeda, because he was so sweet to a student's predicament, gladly did so and introduced her to the club with no name, simply introducing her to the present members. the first years were all out due to some exams, and so, missed the introductions. (which, in hindsight, was better for tanaka but he wouldn't really know that until they were all introduced to each other but, oh well…)

tanaka pretended to be so miserable and no way he missed meeting someone so pretty, not only on the outside but on the inside! noya even talked so animatedly about y/n, that he didn't really bother kiyoko one practice. kiyoko was so thankful to y/n that she pointedly brought her up every time noya was going to try and bother her. and it worked, like a charm.

but, of course, the fun (for the couple) will eventually have to end. the practice match for shiratorizawa and karasuno has finally come. karasuno was home court and so, everyone was buzzing about to see the shiratorizawa volleyball club. takeda almost fainted when he saw how full the gym was of students excited to see a practice match between the two schools. a powerhouse and what was once a powerhouse, people were bound to be excited.

"woah, i haven't seen the gym so full!" hinata gushed as he took in the crowd. kageyama muttered annoyedly beside him, while tsukishima rolled his eyes as yamaguchi chuckled at his enthusiasm, slightly nervous at the crowd.

coach ukai laughed, patting hinata's back. "go on and change. shiratorizawa's about to arrive."

this only fired up the members, screaming in glee as they went to change their attire. meanwhile, shiratorizawa arrived. since y/n has been before, she lead the team to the gym, not stopping even as students gawked. ushijima and tendou were at her right and goshiki was at her left, telling her all about this new game he just got. the others were trailing behind, keeping an eye on y/n, noticing the attention she was getting. sure, they knew she has a boyfriend, but since they haven't met him, they swore to protect their manager from watching eyes.

once in the gym, y/n took note of the court as well as the crowd. she smiles to herself, knowing her boyfriend will get too fired up in this game, even if it was just a practice match. she greeted takeda and ukai, as well as kiyoko and yachi. ukai lead the team to the locker room used by the basketball team for them to change while y/n talked to the karasuno managers. she grinned when she heard her boyfriend, but opted to not greet him as they both agreed that the introductions would come later.

the match soon started, tanaka noticing how his teammates kept glancing at y/n. this fired him up more, shouting for the ball more often than not, trying to get past shiratorizawa's line of defense. y/n hid a smile behind her hand as she took note of the match, noticing her boyfriend's attempts. it was good, she could admit, but shiratorizawa was not called a powerhouse for nothing.

the match ended in shiratorizawa's victory, but y/n could see karasuno's improvement from their first match. she could see that their coach and teacher also agreed with her sentiments, sporting a smile despite losing. 

the crowd slowly trickled out in takeda's polite request. the teams remained, some of them chatting with the others. the members of both schools shook hands, and y/n locked eyes with number 10, hinata shoyo, if she remembered correctly, making the short boy jump as he got kageyama's attention.

she grinned, waving. "hey, hinata, kageyama, keeping out of trouble?"

tanaka looked curious, but didn't say anything, as he grinned. he never knew you knew two of his teammates, but he doesn't mind. it's his kouhai, so duh.

"hi hi! you're the manager for shiratorizawa!" hinata screamed as he put his hand up for a high-five, which y/n returned, ruffling his hair. kageyama, despite looking so serious, blushed and nodded when y/n turned to him and smiled. the others looked on in jealousy and curiosity. how did hinata and…kageyama knew her?

"you three know each other?" daichi, the ever-so-curious captain, asked, eyes flitting to y/n and the two freshmen.

"yeah!" hinata grinned. "she helped us when we got lost in shiratorizawa after we…snuck in it."

hinata's voice got silent after realizing his mistake. kageyama shook his head, facepalming as y/n laughed. daichi smacked his head, bowing quickly. "i am so sorry!"

"don't be." y/n grinned. "they're pretty harmless and ushi needed the whole interaction."

said man was standing beside y/n, simply staring at hinata and nodding at him. tendou snaked his way to her side, his arm going around her shoulder which everyone definitely noticed. tanaka seethed, but calmed because he's her boyfriend. she loves him, not…tendou.

"no, tendou." she smiled, locking eyes with tanaka. "get off."

"but, y/n! you swore you'd tell us who your boyfriend is!" y/n grimaced, knowing the damage had been done when the redhead said her name. but, it definitely took a while with the karasuno volleyball club. because she couldn't be his y/n…right?

y/n rolled her eyes, her cheeks warming without her realization. "god, why did i ever tell you about him?"

"wait, y/n? isn't that tanaka's girlfriend?" a short guy with a tuft of blonde hair in front of his brown (nishinoya, your mind supplied, ryuu's best friend) said.

"your boyfriend is baldie?" tendou asked, eyebrow cocked.

y/n sighed, smiling. "yes, ryuu's my boyfriend."

a beat.

and then there was chaos. well, not really. more like, incessant screaming from karasuno and ridiculous sputtering from shiratorizawa. and through it all, y/n snaked her hand to tanaka's who found his way beside her after she said yes.

"you think they'll ever get over you being my girl?" y/n felt giddy and grinned when tanaka whispered.

"hmm," she hummed. "i'm sure they will. it doesn't really matter because i love you either way."

tanaka laughed and turned to y/n, holding her face in his hand. not once did they notice the eyes that seemed to watch as they both stared lovingly at each other. "i'm glad because i love you too, y/n."

y/n's good for tanaka and tanaka's good for y/n. a collective thought amongst the teens watching the two. they smiled. karasuno, though they felt betrayed, was glad that tanaka really seemed happy. it was enough. then they looked at y/n and they swore to help tanaka protect the girl. a silent understanding occurred between shiratorizawa and karasuno, they may be rivals, but they would gladly help the two be together. a romeo and juliet type of beat.

and so, for an average karasuno high school student, when they get asked to look at the karasuno volleyball club to see who were those dating already, it took a lot of turning heads when they finally noticed. but, then again, they weren't really complaining. tanaka was one of the passionate people in the club, fighting for karasuno and raising morale despite everything. it was good. they were good. karasuno wouldn't have it any other way.

— ten years after, y/n l/n is finally returning to japan. and ten years after midoriya izuku ghosted her. uraraka is guilty, bakugou is expectant, and well, their friends are just waiting for the awkwardness to subside. will there ever be a chance for the two?

"where are we going, y/n?" the green-haired boy said, walking beside you as you both went outside UA. he could see the bag you were carrying but it was impossible to see what was inside. you simply grinned at him as you pulled his hand to a bus stop, just near UA.

"it's a secret!" you said as you bound the bus. you sat just near the back, beside the window and midoriya beside you. it has been a year since you both started in UA and you both were as close as ever. it's still quite awkward when your friend groups tease you both, but you learned to ignore it just as midoriya does because he will never see you that way ever because who tf are yo

okay, what. you sighed, eyes narrowing at the right earphone being given to you. you looked at midoriya who grinned, pointing at his phone which has his spotify playlist open. you smiled back, accepting the earphone and putting it in your left ear.

the past few months with midoriya constantly reminding everyone how you two were just friends, though you couldn't madmit to anyone, definitely sucked. like, what would you feel if your crush, albeit just a happy crush, vehemently denies the possibility of you two. sucks, right? but then again, you were just kind of glad that you didn't lose him. he's one of your closest friends, aside from katsuki, so losing him over such silly thing, is just…going to hurt.

hm. maybe you'll confess soon, before graduation maybe? but for now, you're going to enjoy everything he could offer to you, kinda stupid but what are you going to lose? your thoughts stopped when you realize the next stop was your stop and so, turning to midoriya, you motioned to take the earphones off.

"what is it, y/n?"

"we're almost there, next stop. get ready!"

you pressed the button for the next stop and he got off, offering his hand to help you down. he offered to carry the bag, to which you gladly allowed, because you knew him, he would not stop unless you gave it to him. you hooked your arm in his, a gesture you were both not new with as you did it even as a child, and walked to the park.

midoriya was curious, what were you guys doing at the park? his eyes lit up when you took the bag from him, taking out a blanket and putting it on the ground. "a picnic?"

"why not? we haven't done this since we were kids and we were with our parents, no less."

he chuckled. "that's true. well, then, i guess we'll enjoy the cool breeze, then."

you beamed, taking out a few items. "good! here are a few pens and paper, i know you wouldn't be able to sit still for a long time, so."

he grinned, taking them and thanking you. you were beside him, sketching a few things and writing things down. he did the same, with occasional muttering in his case. close to lunch time, you got out your bag again, taking a few bento boxes and a lunch box cake as well.

you checked the bento boxes, giving midoriya his and the lunch box cake was placed between you two. midoriya's jaw dropped, seeing the cutest box in his hands with his favorite, katsudon!

the lunch box cake in itself was cute, although a bit sloppy in design, but it was really cute and thoughtful as it said, "plus (1) ultra, izuku!"

"hehe, sato helped me bake it but i designed it myself! it was really hard, as you can probably tell, but i hope you like it!"

he had a watery smile when he turned to you, saying, "thank you, y/n."

you grinned, telling him to dig in which he did. you both sat in silence, watching nature as you ate. then, getting a lighter and a candle, midoriya blew his cake after he wished. you snapped a few pictures, uploading them.

a few hours after, you were now at the cinema as you purchased tickets for a rather new hero movie you knew midoriya was planning to watch. he was quick to buy the food and drinks, throwing you a pointed look when you tried to argue.

you sat in the middle, glad that you were able to snag good seats. midoriya couldn't help but look at you every once and in a while, though you didn't notice, completely engrossed in the movie. he couldn't help but notice your features, face burning as he tried to focus on the movie once more. no, this shouldn't happen. you were his best friend. he likes someone else. why the hell is he thinking about looking at you instead? fuck.

he didn't notice the movie was done until you were standing and looking at him, concerned. "you okay, izu? we need to go back, your friends are probably waiting for you."

"ah yeah, let's go." he grinned, standing up. he let you lead the conversation as you ranted about the villain in the movie and raved about the hero and basically, the movie he really didn't understand much, save for a few scenes when he was able to focus. he was glad you didn't really saw him being distracted, because he doubt he could lie to you.

once back in the dorms, you turned to him, grinning. "thank you for accompanying me, izu! i hope you had fun! here's your gift, by the way! please open it later!"

his eyes were wide, the things you did weren't your gifts…? he smiled, pulling you into a hug. he hoped you didn't hear his wild heart. "thank you so much, y/n. i enjoyed today, thank you!"

you beamed, patting his shoulder after you separated. "i'm glad! now go! they're waiting. happy birthday, izu!"

he grinned, his smile was so cute, you thought as you tried to still your beating heart. you walked to the sofa where the bakugou and the others were, smiling as they (except bakugou who mumbled) greeted izuku who waved as he walked to the elevator. you waved to him, saying goodbye.

once the elevator doors closed, he slumped against the back, holding a hand to his heart. yeah, this cannot be good. no matter, he's sure this isn't gonna last long. (he's kinda right and wrong…)

yep...definitely right and wrong.
