JUNHO INTERVIEW

You’ve successfully starred in a Japanese film for the first time now. Could you tell us how you felt when you received the offer?

In terms of works in Japan, this is my first work since I made a cameo appearance in the Japanese remake of the drama Memory, and it’s also my first time to play the leading role. I approached the work with a serious attitude while keeping a touch of lightness. I hope it turns out to be something the audience would enjoy watching.

The manga-artist Akiko Higashimura wrote the original manga-story specifically for the film. How did you feel about the work when you first heard of the main ideas?

First of all, as I was to play the double role of a star artist and a university student, I thought I need to make sure to digest the differences between the two characters. For I didn’t want to ruin the original story, I did my best to portray the characters so that they won’t seem so different from the characters in the manga.

What was your impression of the script when you first read it?

There were some awkward Korean phrases that would make me feel embarrassed such as “the girl with the scent of soap” . . . It was rather difficult for me to say those lines, but I tried to live with the embarrassment and play the characters well, thinking about my fans and the people who would come to see the film.

What is your interpretation of the meanings implied in the title Roses and Tulips?

Roses are ravishing while tulips have a plain familiarity. To me, they are both beautiful “flowers.” Let’s just say, [the title connotes] “the beauty of the youth when you have dreams.”

You play the double role of the two titular characters; Nero and Daewon, who are quite opposite in their personalities. What was your approach in creating the characters?

As a character, Nero is an “oresama”(pompous “I-am-the-king”)-type person and Daewon is an innocent person with an angelic heart, respectively. I didn’t really bother to analyse them systematically though. Nevertheless, interestingly enough, I often found myself automatically absorbed in the character once I heard; “Filming Daewon’s scene!” or “Nero’s scene coming up!”

Paintings are the key motif in the film. Are you good at painting?

No. I’m not good at it at all. (laugh)

The film’s story is set at a Japanese inn with “onsen”(hot springs). Have you ever been to an onsen in Japan?

Yes, I have. A few times. I like onsen so much that I feel like going to an onsen every year when winter comes. The open-air onsen in Sapporo was fantastic.

Could you tell us about your first impression of your co-star, Mitsuki Tanimura?

She was such a gentle and kind person. We could work together calmly throughout the filmshoot.

How did you like working for a film in Japan? Is there anything that left you a strong impression?

The filming location for the scenes around the Japanese inn was a very quiet, idyllic town. It made me want to come back for a visit again someday later. It was a beautiful town.

2PM’s Junho’s compelling acting can’t be missed!

2PM’s Junho has been making steady progress in his career as an actor. Confession is the last work he starred in before his enlistment. While this is his second time to take on the role of a lawyer following Memory with which he debuted on the small screen, this time round he mysteriously plays the role of a competent lawyer Choi Do Hyun, who seeks to uncover the truth behind a case cool-headedly and steadily. The other actor to lead the story alongside Junho is Yoo Jae Myung whose villain role in Secret Forest was much talked about. He plays Ki Chun Ho who comes to work together with Do Hyun and help him in his pursuit, making the most of his hunches and instinct as an ex-detective with years of experience, while having complex ties with Do Hyun from the past. Junho in this drama is a must-see, as he is already even threateningly impressive with his dignified presence as a skilled actor (literally; an actor known for his acting skills rather than his looks), showing us how he holds his own in the acting showdowns against his senior actors.

The work is directed by Kim Cheol Kyu, whose Mother, a remake of the Japanese drama, was highly acclaimed. Taking up a difficult subject that questions the principle of ne bis in idem, which prohibits a case to be tried again once the final decision is made, he elevates it into a convincing story with a meticulous structure. His execution makes this work one of the finest courtroom dramas that is worth watching among the many.

Reasons Why Choi Do Hyun Is Extraordinary

“Speech and behaviour which are normally unexpected of from a rookie lawyer.”

He maintains his cool behaviour even when he is badmouthed by his senior lawyers behind his back as a son of a death row inmate. On the other hand, he is very good at negotiations, smoothly gaining trust and eliciting support from detectives who are older than him.

“He gets so absorbed in his cases that he even forgets to eat or sleep.”

Once he starts to think about the cases, he often loses track of time and ends up staying in the office day and night, even falling asleep on his desk. Still, he always keeps his neat appearance and never wears his suits sloppily.

“He will find evidences by himself, having a hands-on approach to the cases.”

Whenever a question arises, he goes to the places or goes to see the people related to the suspect to find clues with his own hands. He is so much of a doer that he is even ridiculed for acting like a prosecutor.

I was really dying to make the announcement already.(laugh) Furthermore, I also got to realise my dream of having a solo tour! I’m really so happy!” And then he smiled with that signature sunshine Junho smile. Even after becoming a star with enthusiastic fans in every country in Asia, his childlike smile hasn’t changed at all.

With his outstanding gift for singing and physical abilities, he plays a vital role in 2Pm’s performance while being a songwriter who creates all those songs loved by the fans. “Forever,” the ballad that moved the entire audience in the venue at the Dome concert, is also his work.

“When I’m writing a song for 2PM, I try to make the most of the members’ characters. But I believe I could express 100% of my thoughts and feelings and what I want to say through my music more simply in my solo songs.”

From the title track “Kimi no koe/Your voice” which he wrote thinking about his fans and “I love you” which straightforwardly expresses the feelings you have when you are in love to “Me wo tojite/Close your eyes” which is a song of one’s overflowing feelings toward his loved one, Kimi no Koe turned out to be an album full of love.

“When I’m on my way to work, I often see couples enjoying their bike ride along the Han River and I get envious.(laugh) Someday, I’d like to take a walk with the person I love, holding each other’s hands, and make her be the first person to listen to my song, too.”

This young man has a romantic gift of making many women’s hearts throb. Now we are about to be embraced in the bright lights shone from Junho’s love songs this summer.

1. Your ideal woman

My ideal type would be someone with whom we can comfort each other and ease each other’s pains just by being together. I’d love to have a relationship where we can stay relaxed. What? It’s not the same answer as the last time? It often changes.(laugh) Let’s just say how a person thinks or feels changes depending on the situations.

2. The first meeting

I go to a cinema alone and see a woman in the same row across the aisle, and our eyes meet by chance. But I feel like I’ve somehow known her from long time ago . . . I’d like to experience that kind of an encounter. And when the film comes to the end, I’d be the one to ask her; “Would you like to go have some tea?” Ha-ha.

3. Night

I end up being wide awake once I’m back in my room. I know I have to go to sleep, but I feel that I need to make the most of this precious time and I start to read, watch films, or listen to music. I often watch Japanese dramas to improve my conversation skills as well.

4. My first performance.

I think it was when I was in the first or second grade in primary school. There was this singing contest for children at an event site, and I tried to take part in it on the spur of the moment while I waited for my mother.(laugh) The outcome? My mother came back and got surprised finding me there and took me back off the stage (before I got to sing). The thing is, I wanted to give her the rice-cooker which was the winner’s prize.

5. Prophecy

When I was a trainee, I was on my way home taking the tube late at night, and a granny came up to me and said; “You’ll make it big in 3 years. Pull yourself together and stop wasting time.” And we made a debut as 2PM 3 years after that. Even if it was a coincidence, I find it really extraordinary.

Perfect in both heart and body! Junho is a guy who is meant to be a star.

“Ice Cream” which is the first track of the mini-album is a song I wrote for my fans to listen to in the time of the day when the sun shines on you brightly. I’m sure you are all very busy, so I hope listening to it on your way to work makes you feel happy.

The album title 2017 S/S, which seems like it indicates the Spring/Summer fashion season, actually connotes “summer stream.”

Do you have any preference in your romantic partner’s summer fashion?

I’d like that they wear something with which they can express who they are and how they are. I myself like to choose various styles by how I am feeling on that day. I might want to look bold one day, and then go for chic another day. I think it would be fun to sense the changes in my partner’s mood and feelings by the clothes one has on.

What would you like to do this summer?

I’d like to go to a canyon and enjoy leisure activities. I used to enjoy outdoor activities such as riding on a mountain bike, but now I’m too busy and so . . .

You work as 2PM and as an actor, and in addition to that, you work as a solo artist in summer. That must keep you from meeting your friends. How do you feel about it? You must miss them?

I do. I try not to think about it by focusing on some other things. I’d take a bath and go to sleep right away, play some games, or watch a film.

Can you do without seeing your romantic partner for a long time?

If it’s for my partner, I might go to see them however busy I am even if I have to cut down my sleep hours. I’d be happy if my partner comes to visit me as well. But I’d be sorry if it’s really late, and I’d worry because it’s dangerous to walk alone so late at night. I suppose it would be nice if we can let each other know when you are likely to be swamped with work -- like, “I won’t be able to see you now because of this and that.” I’d like to work hard and play hard. (I want to have a clear distinction between my work and my personal life.)

One good star-like answer after another! Well, then, what is your idea of a “bad guy”?

I suppose he should be someone who gives a woman a hard time. He would be sexy and experienced in dealing with women, must have a very fit body, and spend money lavishly. He would be well-versed in everything. This kind of person makes you want to get to know him better, and you’d want to have him but can’t. He would be that kind of a charming person. However, I think there would be very few men who are like that while being kind and nice as a person. Am I being too realistic?

Not at all. That’s a fair argument. Conversely, what kind of person is a “good guy”?

ABOUT JUNHO A to Z

Acting: Which scene in your previous works made your heart flutter the most?

To me, there isn’t any scene that does it. I’m sometimes surprised at my own acting when I watch myself on TV, though, as it happens that I don’t remember why I did what I did in such a way.

Bond: When did you feel the bonds among 2PM members?

The moment the last stage of 6nights concert in Korea finished, we spontaneously hugged each other and started crying. Everything that happened over the decade came back to us, and with our fans calling out our names, we couldn’t help but get emotional.

Chansung: What kind of person is Chansung?

Though he’s the maknae, he has profound thoughts. But he thinks and worries too much, too. (laugh) I’d say he’s a lot mature for his age.

Desire: What is your desire?

It’s more like a dream than a desire, but I’d like to live on like this – singing, acting, and being loved by you. I guess you can say I have a massive desire in a sense.

Eat: What is your favourite food?

Now I’m into having Thai food delivered. Once I like something, I tend to keep on eating the same thing. (laugh) I’ve always had Chansung grill meat for me, for I felt even that was too much of a bother, but I’ve learned to cook at last to prepare for the role of a chef for the drama Wok of Love. I’m pretty good at making fried rice!

Future: How would you be 10 years from now?

I really don’t want to think about it. Not yet.

Graduate: What do you want to quit doing?

(the term “graduate” is used metaphorically)

I’d like to put an end to my tendency to get addicted to things. It goes for my eating Thai food all the time now, and the same goes for my choosing the same clothes to wear even though I have tons of other clothes. It’s even a mystery to me, too, why I’m like this. (laugh)

Hottest: What do fans mean to you?

They are the best. I’ve been trying to be more active on social media so I can communicate with my fans.

Impact: Was there anything that shocked you recently?

While I was preparing for my tour in Japan, Chansung dropped by with some chicken for me without notice.

Junho: What kind of person are you?

(after giving it some thought . . . ) I suppose I’m not bad. I can’t say I’m a good person, but I’m not that bad either. (laugh)

Jun. K: What kind of person is Jun. K?

He is a “kawaii” person in many ways. (laugh) He shows his emotions and affections openly, but he also demands us of the same show of affection.

Love: What are your views on love?

Love is something with no answer. (Love is something from which you shouldn’t expect results.) It means you love this person unconditionally. When you fall in love, you experience a change in your character. You become someone “no one has ever seen before.” (laugh) I don’t know how I would be myself.

Moment: Which moment left you a strong impression on you?

There are many moments, but I’d say the moment when we went on stage at Tokyo Dome, the moment I had a solo concert, and as an actor, the moment I was awarded a prize last year stand out.

Nichkhun: What kind of person is Nichkhun?

He is kind, but not in the sense that he is just nice: He’s sometimes strict, too. As he is a true professional, I have lots to learn from him.

Only One: Your image of the ideal woman?

I really can’t say. I guess the person I fall in love with will become my ideal woman. I’m not trying to be evasive here. (laugh)

2PM: What is 2PM to you?

My family. Although it’s much more than that. (I cannot express how I feel about them in just this single word.)

Question: What would you like to ask your fans?

Are you eating properly? Are you doing okay? Will you come to my concert? Will you stan 2PM forever?

Rest: What eases your mind?

Spending time with my cats at home. Being with my cats somehow makes me feel and act like I’m taking care of a baby. (laugh) I didn’t talk at all at home before, but having cats made me a talker.

Sleep: Do you wear pyjamas at night?

I’m not particular about sleeping attires. But I always try to sleep with my arms and legs sprawled out. I heard it’s good for your health. The problem is, I can’t move much because my three cats sleep on my legs.

Taecyeon: What kind of person is Taecyeon?

He’s cool-headed and realistic. One more thing! He acts cute!

Underbelly: What are your shortcomings?

Being too focused and addictive. When I focus on something, I get hooked on it so hard that I won’t be able to do anything else.

View: The view you cannot forget?

The sea and the sun in Hawaii when I went to film my music video for “SO GOOD.” I remember it was really hectic, too.

Wooyoung: What kind of person is Wooyoung?

He has his own worldview, but he doesn’t impose it on others. He doesn’t ask us to understand it either. You could say he’s a free spirit. And that’s who he is.

XXXXX: Something new that you want to try?

I’d like to get the licences for sailing a yacht and flying an airplane.

Young Boy: What kind of relationship do you have among the Young Boys?

They are friends of same age. I don’t know why but we resonate with each other very often. Even when the six of us go out for dinner, the Old Boys and the Young Boys automatically choose to sit together at the same table, respectively, if we need to sit at two tables.

Zest: What spices up your life?

I’m always craving for new challenges, and I love challenging things. If focusing on one particular thing is me in the present, challenging new things would be my future. I always imagine a future: Imagining things is really inspiring. It motivates me, too.

Otona Dessert / Desserts for Adults

We’ll be introducing cooling desserts that only adults can enjoy such as “shime”-parfait after a drink and champagne infused desserts. Let’s see what kind of summer night in Japan Junho would spend, enjoying such desserts for adults. (Note: “shime” literally means “closing” and it can be used as a prefix to mean the final dish or dessert usually enjoyed after drinking.)

1. What kind of chilly experience have you had lately? – During the drama shoot, they gave me a script with added lines unexpectedly, and said “We’ll give you 5 minutes to learn!” As the long lines had technical terms in them, I had to work so hard to memorise them!

2. A word to Chansung who made a solo debut in Japan. – I’m proud of your hard work. I knew you’d do a fine job.

3. What kind of woman makes you feel sweet/romantic? – Someone who is confident while making me feel confident, too. I’m attracted to women who are strong and kind.

4. What would you do to comfort your girlfriend when the summer heat is making her feel down? – I’ll give her a scoop of pistachio ice cream which is my favourite!

-- You are well-known for your love of ice cream. Tell us about the history of your taste in ice cream.

“I’ve always liked chocolate and vanilla since I was a child. Also, I love melon-flavoured ice cream! And I can never forget the impact of my first soda-flavoured ice lolly. I’ve tasted various kinds of ice cream so far, and I found that I love every taste.”

-- Why do you like ice cream?

“I like it because it’s cooling, sweet, and delicious. It’s just that simple. The kind I have on a daily basis lately is soda-flavoured ice lolly. When I feel “I worked hard today,” I’d often have pistachio ice cream as a treat for myself.

-- What kind of ice cream do you always have in Japan?

“A soft serve! I especially love the soft serve in Sapporo that is made with thick milk.”

-- How did you like the Champagne frozen dessert?

“I tried it a little after the shoot, and it was a ‘taste for adults’ with a clear, refreshing taste, particular to Champagne. Although I have a low tolerance for alcohol myself, it seems like it will make you happy if you have it when you can lay back and relax after a hard day’s work in the heat. I have an image of Champagne as some special drink you’d have with others on a happy occasion. Next time I’d like to have a glass after a concert with the 2PM members.

-- Your ideal summer date?

“(Seemingly having trouble coming up with a plan . . . ) Well, it’s hard to say, for I don’t have much experience, but . . . if I’m going to have a date in summer, I’d enjoy a swim in the sea together since it’d be hot, then have a light and refreshing fruit-flavoured ice lolly together on the beach. That might be my ideal.” (laugh)

Thanks to all of you fans, summer became the season I like and look forward to. This year’s tour is going to be a sort of a milestone. I’d like to enjoy this with all my heart and sear everything in my memory with my own eyes!

“Show me what’s in your mind, Junho!”

1. {Want to go on a trip} Anywhere will do! I don’t think I’ve ever been on a trip other than for work . . . (sob)

I miss them while I’m engaged in my solo activities. ♡

2PM: First of all, we are really noisy when we are together! (laugh) We are very lively, and I love being with them like that!

Chansung: Then I’ll start with Chansung-san. He is Mr Bear. I feel at ease and safe when I’m with him: That makes me feel he’s like a bear. But you know bears can be scary sometimes when they get angry. He is like that, too! (laugh)

Wooyoung and Nichkhun: Wooyoung-san and Nichkhun-san are those who cherish romantic ideas. It’s not that they think about work romantically, but they have romantic ideas towards life. (whispering) Sometimes I can’t understand them. (laugh)

Taecyeon: And Taecyeon-san is the one who is completely on the opposite side of them! He is extremely realistic!! I believe that aspect of his helps us maintain a balance as a whole.

Jun. K: Lastly, Jun. K-san is really nothing but kawaii/cute. ♡ Whatever he does is kawaii, and it’s difficult not to like him because he loves to show affection and he’s really good at it, too. He is also someone who wants us to show affection back to him just as much as he shows us.

“Tell us about your work!”

-- Please tell us about your recently released album Souzou.

There are various connotations in the term “souzou,” but it mostly came from the idea that I wanted to give you the time to ponder freely: To think about various things, and to be indulged in your feelings to your loved one. I thought it would be important to have such time. Hopefully, my fans would imagine about me in many ways on their own!

-- You are doing great as an actor, too. What do you enjoy about acting?

The best thing is that you can live various people’s lives. I get focused and absorbed into the work/character once we start to film the work, and it leaves me somewhat empty the moment we finish it. When I’m taking on both jobs as an actor and a singer simultaneously, it seems that I can instantly switch my mind into the ongoing work once I’d get to the site.

-- What’s your motto in work?

To always approach the job with sincerity, whenever it is, whatever I do. I realised that whether I’m able to do that or not made a whole lot of difference. So, I’m determined to do everything with all my might. Though it’s easier said than done.

Q & A for Junho!

Q: Which place in Korea would you recommend for us to go?

A: You should ask Wooyoung this kind of question! He used to go to Haebangchon often. It seems to have become a popular place lately.

Q: What do you often eat (lately)?

A: Maybe riceballs because they are easy to eat while you are studying the script and preparing for the role. There’s this shop where I can buy riceballs with stir-fried-pork-and-vegetables fillings and a sunny-side-up fillings. These are my favourites.

Q: Which word did you search on the web lately?

A: The title of my current drama. Wok of Love.

Q: Who do you admire and respect?

A: My parents. The other day, my parents sent me a photo of them taken at the beach. It made me feel wanting to live like that.

Q: You always enjoy having ice cream during your summer tour. Which flavour would you like to have right now?

A: Pistachio. I almost had it yesterday if I hadn’t dropped it . . . It made me sad. (sob)

Q: Your ideal woman?

A: Someone with whom I can communicate well. I want to laugh together talking about sweet nothings, and sometimes just stay there together comfortably without any words. But I suppose this is the kind of thing that’s the most difficult in reality.

Q: How would you like to spend the autumn season with your fans?

A: Going to see the autumn leaves would surely be nice! Taking a walk together, taking photos . . . I’m sure it would be fun if I can spend time like that with my fans. How about calling the event “Let’s take a walk together♡”?

Q: A date plan for this autumn?

A: I’d love to do something that gives me a strong impression of autumn. It would be fun to go to see the autumn leaves!

How Roses & Tulips Came into Production

Back in 2016, Ms Akiko Higashimura received a commission from NBC Universal Entertainment: “Would you be willing to create a manga to be used as the original story for a new film made for 2PM Junho?”

Junho is a member of 2PM, one of the top boy groups in Asia, who has been rapidly garnering enormous attention not just in Korea even as an actor lately. With the willing consent of Ms Higashimura, who has been known as a devout Hottest, this unprecedentedly fantastic project took off!

To begin with, Ms Higashimura came up with multiple (to our surprise!) plots and rough drawings, having “a film starring Junho” in mind.

Also reflecting how Junho himself wanted the work to be “something that would please his fans even more,” the 160-page storyboard of Roses and Tulips was born by the end of 2017.

A script was written, based on the storyboard, and they carried out the filming in Japan quite secretly last year. And now finally in 2019, the manga version with all those lively characters that are so like Higashimura’s creation and the film version where we can fully enjoy both the pompous “oresama” king-like Junho and the cute puppy-like Junho at the same time are going to be released!

Please do enjoy both of these two “BARACHU” worlds – the manga and the film!

An exclusive interview with Junho who stars in the film!

Q. Here we have a project where we produce the original manga and the film simultaneously. How did you feel about it when you were first offered to do this?

A. First of all, I’m really grateful about this. I thought I should do my best. I was concerned to make my characters synchronise with those in the manga as much as I can, but I’m not sure if they really ended up synchronising. (laugh)

Q. What was your impression of the original story?

A. It was fun. I studied the story, imagining how I should act to digest and realise the double role.

Q. Do you read Japanese mangas?

A. I like them. I often read Korean webtoons, too. I think I’ve read most of those famous works like Dragon Ball, One Piece and Doraemon . . . though I’m so busy lately that I don’t have much time to read comics.

Q. Which can you relate to more, Nero or Daewon?

A. I believe they both have some aspects that are similar to me. How Nero can be sensitive because of his perfectionism, and Daewon’s innocence, perhaps.

Q. Any message to the readers?

A. Hope you love Higashimura-sensei’s manga Roses and Tulips a lot!

On the 7th mini-album SOUZOU

-- The album topped both Oricon’s Daily and Weekly rankings. What significance has this album become to hold for you as a solo artist?

JUNHO: First of all, I must say it made me very happy because this was the first time for me to have an album topping the weekly chart, which actually has been one of my dreams since my debut. I’m happy that I could make a wonderful memory together with all my fans with this album. In terms of my artistic career, this work gave me a chance to think more consciously about what kind of music I would like to create from now on.

-- You’ve expressed that you wrote “Across Time” in this album as a song that can remind us of your relationship with Hottests. Can you tell us more about your thoughts and feelings about this song?

J: I wanted to dedicate this song to all Hottests, whom I won’t be able to see for a short long while, hoping for the day we could meet again to come soon. I will come back quickly.

On the solo tour “JUNHO (From 2PM) Solo Tour 2018 ‘FLASHLIGHT’”

-- What did this tour mean to you? Looking back on the tour, what has left you a strong impression?

J: I always feel a bit of dissatisfaction whenever I have a tour. I feel that there must be something more I could have done. But I always do my best with all my might. It really makes me sad that this was the last summer tour for now. I hope to go on and have more of our summer we have been feeling for 6 years. And of course, what I remember most should naturally be your cheers I received on stage.

2PM has celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Here are 10 questions to look back on the 10 years after debut.

Q.1 How do you feel about having spent the 10 years as JUNHO from 2PM?

J: I think I’ve been working really hard. We still have so many dreams we want to make it happen as 2PM. We’ve been through a lot, and we’ve got to know a lot of people. These 10 years have made me think a lot about life.

Q.2 What do you think is your position in 2PM?

J: An all-round player. (laugh)

Q.3 What are the differences between musical activities and acting jobs?

J: The only difference is your approach to the ways you express feelings. As an artist, music and acting are in the same field.

Q.4 Which song is most memorable among the songs by 2PM?

J: It’s “Heartbeat” because we’ve performed it countless times.

Q.5 It’s been 10 years since your debut. When do you feel you have grown up?

J: I feel a little grown up now that I have some room to breathe time-wise, but I don’t really want to confront the fact that I have grown up. (laugh)

Q.6 Then, which part of you is not going to change forever?

J: My enthusiasm to make my dreams come true. I hope this is never going to change.

Q.7 What kind of artist would you have become ten years from now?

J: I wonder what I would be doing. If I could have concerts and meet my fans like this and work as an actor at the same time like I’m doing now, there would be nothing more I wish for. And of course, that’s what I would try to be doing.

Q.8 What kind of 2PM can we expect when 2PM makes a come-back with all six of you?

J: I believe we will be much cooler and dashing!

Q.9 When do you feel 2PM is indispensable to you?

J: All the time. I don’t feel lonely when I’m with my members.
