Dinosaur macarons and pink prosecco: how afternoon tea in UK embraced the Instagram generation
Finger sandwiches, scones and tea sipped from bone china have long been enshrined as a British ritual. But a tradition that was once seen as the preserve of the upper and middle classes – as well as of older generations – is finding a new audience.
Sales of afternoon tea hampers are soaring, while more hotels, restaurants and cafes are creating their own offerings, some with increasingly experimental menus. Surveys suggest it is becoming more popular with younger people, partly inspired by how it will look on social media.
Cafes and hotels near family attractions are offering spreads with themes such as Peter Rabbit, Paddington Bear and science experiments. Adults can enjoy more sophisticated options at places such as the Fife Arms, an Aberdeenshire hotel run by the owners of the Hauser & Wirth gallery in London, with a tour of art by Pablo Picasso, Lucian Freud and Bruegel followed by a tea of smoked trout, ham with Arran mustard and a hot cross choux bun.

Scientists find a use for old tea bags - turn them into roads
Paved with good tea
What to do with all the waste from preparing zillions of cups of tea? Researchers in Malaysia propose converting some of it into infrastructure.
Mohammad Al Biajawi at University Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah and his team outline both the problem and their plan to attack it: “The annual consumption of a country’s population of hundreds of tons of black tea results in considerable numbers of discarded teabags. These huge quantities are disposed in landfills… The aim of this study is to experimentally investigate the effect of [carbon nanotubes] from tea waste on the mechanical and fresh properties of cement mortars.”

What is the Japanese ‘wabi-sabi’ aesthetic actually about? ‘Miserable tea’ and loneliness, for starters
What is wabi-sabi, and why does it rate its own section alongside such topics as sushi and karate?
Wabi-sabi is typically described as a traditional Japanese aesthetic: the beauty of something perfectly imperfect, in the sense of “flawed” or “unfinished.” Actually, however, wabi and sabi are similar but distinct concepts, yoked together far more often outside Japan than in it. Even people who have been brought up in Japan may struggle to define wabi and sabi precisely, though each is certainly authentically Japanese and neither is especially obscure.
