This is a picture of Christine Nilsson from the shoulders up, wearing a dress with a beaded neckline and a brooch. Her hair is up, and she is seated toward her right side but looking directly at the camera. In the late 19th century, celebrity publicity escalated due to the development of modern photographic processes. The overland telegraph and theater soon became a popular diversion throughout California, contributing to the boom in the film industry in the 1920s. The Actress and Singer Photograph Collection contains publicity images of some of the most celebrated female thespians and opera singers from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Many of the photos in the collection are the product of popular San Francisco photographic studios. Isaiah West Taber, I. W. (Isaiah West), 1830-1912 (1830-1912) was a Californian daguerreotypist, ambrotypist, and photographer who took many pictures of noted Californians to "preserve the names and faces, and keep alive the memory of those who made it what it is." Emma Nevada (née Wixom) (1859 – 1940) was born and spent her early childhood in Northern California. She was an American operatic soprano and is considered one of the finest coloratura sopranos of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
