Tip 34: If a Story Isn’t Working

If you’ve ever tried to write a story and found that, even on your fifth or sixth attempt, it isn’t working, perhaps it’s time to try a drastically different tactic.

Try it in a different medium.

Write it as a script instead of a novel.

Aim for a novella instead of a novel.

Try a TV show instead of a movie.

Try writing snippets of it as short stories.

Change the POV character.

If none of these work, try using everything you’ve discovered about your characters and the plot as backstory and move them a year or two into the future and start with a new plot.

These might help you beat writer’s block and create something you love immensely.

I said I’d do this for him. The grumplander has arrived.

Appearance

Height: 6′5 (77 inches tall)

Build: muscles, athletic, still physically fit

Eyes: Working one is blue, other has turned white

Hair: long, unkempt. Was brown, now mostly grey with hints of brown

Distinguishing characteristics: left eye is scarred, blind in it. Uses what aether he has to see properly. Body is scarred and marked, clear signs of a man that’s fought in the dragonsong war.

Impirtant Possessions: his Lance and a greatsword, both wrapped and on his back. A rose pendant around his neck, given to him by the kha ladies. A tarnished wedding ring

Clothing: very casual loose clothes, although his outfit when out and about is actually hiding the still well kept set of dragoon armor made for him.

RP Hooks:

His Lance: Connor is a former Ishgardian Dragoon. He served in the Dragonsong War. Those two facts are well known, he doesn’t hide them. What he does hide is why they allowed him to “retire”. He lost his family, and then his eye, during one of the nastier encounters with the Horde of Nidhogg. His superiors saw what the grief and guilt had done to him, and decided that it was better to let the man walk away with some dignity than to push him to fight again. 

His Blade: Recently, Connor found a sword. A very, very large sword. And he’s been hearing voices, voices that tell him things. Deeds and misdeeds that other dark knights have performed protecting those of Ishgard who weren’t being protected. And the voices have made perfect sense to him. To Connor, the Holy See is corrupted, and while he is only one man, someone needs to stand up to those who corrupt the Church and the teachings to their benefit. 

His Family: Connor had a family in Ishgard. A loving wife of a noble family and a daughter. But her family exiled her for marrying Connor, since he was just some street rat from the Brume who happened to know how to use a lance. After losing them both to a dragon, Connor spent a few years alone until one Little Ladies Day, chance led him to meet the Kha, namely Narani and her child Altani. He took a liking to the two women, and has been close friends with Narani since, looking after her kid as a godfather of sorts, when she’s not keeping him from doing very stupid things himself.

His Addiction: Connor has an alcohol problem. Not that he doesn’t have a tolerance, but that any alcohols near him will disappear. Maxi is working (slowly) on getting him to become a functioning member of society, and it’s sorta working. Connor will frequent places that provide booze, always paying for whatever he does drink, but usually will end up drunk. He will leave before he becomes a problem though, or will do so when asked.
