i wont say what it is yet, in case you haven't seen it yet, so i don't spoil ya. but yeah i kinda have a specific scene in mind sooo that's my ask heh 😅.

I haven’t seen it yet, sorry! I would recommend someone else to ask but I haven’t really been active on here to know 🙁 sorry!

hi katie! i just wanna ask: how do you use the exploding heart overlay in that gif header of peter in ffh?

hello! long story short i used a layer mask with the overlay layer blend mode set to lighten

im bored tho so i figured i’d do a little tutorial - i’ve lost the original base gif and cba making it again so i’ll do my best to explain how to go from this:

lmk if anything’s not clear. i use photoshop cc, and this assumes you have some gif making knowledge already!

1. download the pack from here and have your base gif ready as video timelines - you want your base gif to be around the same length as the overlay (as in the same number of frames), and you don’t want one where the subject moves around too much

2. open both the overlay (it’s called 020.psd) and your base gif, so you have two documents open

3. copy the overlay into the base gif document. i do this by going to layer>duplicate layer... and changing the destination document to the base gif document.

4. go to your base gif document. your layers should look like this:

5. now you need to make the overlay layer “see through” so you can see the base gif. make sure you’ve selected the overlay layer, and set the blend mode to lighten or lighter colour (play around with the options, which one works best depends on your base gif. i’m using lighten)

6. use the move tool to position the hearts around the head - you might also need to resize the overlay too, depending on your base gif. make sure you check the positioning at different points in the gif to see what it looks like throughout.

7. now to get rid of the bits in front of the subject (in this case, spidey). select the base gif layer, then go to Select> Subject. it missed off the bits at the bottom because theyre the same colour as the background, but its okay because the overlay wont be near them anyway. if you need to you can add or remove bits of the selection to make it a neater fit around the subject. doesn’t have to be too precise though, because he moves around anyway

8. Then go to Select> Inverse to select everything that isn’t the subject - where we want to be able to see the hearts etc

9. select the overlay layer, then use this button to add a layer mask

your layers should now look like this:

10. check through your gif to see how it’s looking. you can add or remove any bits of the layer mask by using the brush tool to colour in the bits you want to show (colour in white) or hide (colour in black). in mine, there’s a bit where the hearts were cut off so i want to change that
