The one thing I want to comment on is the pain speech from fleabag. I don't really think we can equate this speech to PWBs personal feelings about women (idk her so i could be wrong but I never think that a creator should be judged by the morals of the characters they're putting on display).

I just know that as a person who menstruates I kind of glossed over the fact that the character only spoke in binary and cisnormative terms and related to what she had to say in many ways. As an afab person I never really made peace with the fact that I'm supposed to bleed and be in pain for years and somehow treat that as something to celebrate. In my upbringing this topic was something to accept and get on with, there was no space for grieving the life I could have had, had I been born in a different body.

And this is still something I do. I know there's no changing my teenage and pre-teenage experience, going to school scared shitless about having to do sports while on my first period, wearing a Sweatshirt around my waist, afraid habout bleeding through my pants or letting other people hear me opening my pad in the bathroom. I grieve the time that I could have spent not afraid.

Womanhood is not pain and then the 'relief' of Menopause (at least in my definition). And the experiences of my puberty wouldn't make me more of a woman than any trans woman.

It is simply a different experience.

I see this monologue as something afab people and people who menstruate can relate to. Using the term 'woman' here to talk about people who menstruate is unfortunate and I can see how this can hurt the trans community by playing into TERFy views. And that people who don't menstruate are inherently violent because they're 'missing the pain' is of course ridiculous. But this isn't a science presentation, these are the personal thoughts of a character in the show whom we know next to nothing about. I think that's why from an outside standpoint, for me this scene isn't inherently transphobic and can't be pinned to PWB as something she supports. These are the thoughts of a post-menopausal cis woman who seems to have been at war with her bodily functions for a long time and has come to a conclusion about her own womanhood that not everyone (me neither) might agree with. This character hasn't considered trans women in her rant about periods and the pain she has experienced and I don't think that this is good or bad, I just think it's a neutral and obviously limited observation of her own experiences that she falsely attributes to every afab person on the planet.

I think womanhood or manhood should not be defined by biology for every person and instead by the individual and only for the individual themself.

I, as a trans woman, have Issues and Problems with Phoebe Waller-Bridge & some stuff she’s written about womanhood in pretty bioessentialist ways (in otherwise really good tv shows) but I don’t know if I wanna post them here because I’m worried people will tell me I’m being Over The Top & clutching at straws as people always accuse trans women when they criticize cis women.
