MOVIE REVIEW:Belfast

People will like

BELFAST

and people won’t hate

BELFAST

and chances are too that people won’t love 

BELFAST

but that is ok because the movie is likable, the performances are good and most important the movie doesn’t suck!

Walking into Belfast it is also good to know that this is based on Kenneth Branagh’s childhood and not

ALFONSO CUARON’S

and it takes place in Ireland and not Mexico and Belfast is not Roma and even if it is in black and white

BELFAST

is not

ROMA

and even if it might win best picture at this year’s Oscars like the pundits are predicting 

BELFAST IS NOT ROMA

or a masterpiece like Roma but instead a decent, watchable film that gives you a crowd pleasing version of the tension that took place in Northern Ireland between the Protestants and the Catholics in 1969 from the perspective of a likable nine year named Buddy played by Judd Hill.

And the film is in black and white which is good even if I did question

WHY IS THIS MOVIE IN BLACK AND WHITE?

 There are well composed scenes in Belfast that at times feel too

WELL COMPSOSED

and reminded me again that this movie wants to be a great movie which also made me wonder

IS BELFAST REALLY A GREAT MOVIE?

And while there is not that much to hate about Belfast, I felt little watching Belfast and for a film about a boy coming of age during war torn Northern Ireland that wants to be a “great movie” shouldn’t I be more emotionaly invested watching Belfast?
