Suwako points out that basketball is traditionally played by putting the ball through metal hoops to score, and metal hoops are really more of HER thing. This creates a schism within the sport, resulting in Yasakaball (Kanako Style) and Yasakaball (Suwako Style). The two goddesses then proceed to continue modifying their sports to differentiate them between eachother and promote people playing their version more.

This is what ultimately causes the incident, as the schism in Yasakaball becomes a schism within the Moriya Shrine itself, and Sanae has to help her moms come back together, at which point they create a new form of Bowling (Moriyaball)

People will often talk about Sanae bringing in knowledge from the Outside World, but it is important to consider the fact that Kanako and Suwako lived out there up to the same point Sanae did. Kanako also has intentions of bringing technology to Gensokyo too, giving her ample reason for her in particular to help spread Outside World concepts. I think Kanako is the one who tries to bring Outside World sports into Gensokyo, but does so in a way where playing the sport qualifies as worshiping her and giving her faith in some form, which ends up often messing with the vibes in some way.

kanako invents a new form of basketball called "yasakaball" where the hoops are little versions of her shimenawa circle. through a variety of strange coincidences this somehow causes yet another incident to be her fault
