Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

was talking with a friend about this but it hit me how when men are written the process isn’t “ oh I have to write a male character “ it’s just “ I have to write a character “ but with women it’s “ I have to write a female character. “

and for the latter it can be about writing a female character pushing the harmful tropes or trying to fight of the tropes but it still… it still puts her in a box, and, as my friend said, she’s not allowed to be real.
