Ahhhhhhh I just started model un like literally today. I am completely unprepared help.
Hi! I'd say that the most important part in model UN is knowing when and how to speak. If you want more tips that are more specific, I'd probably ask someone from your area who has done Model UN before, just because different regions have different standards for this. On top of that knowing how best to do research is important, although you can easily bs your way through that if necessary. I hope you have fun!

I just entered high school and I wanna pick an extracurricular and Mun looked interesting but I don't really know what you do in it or what it's about, could you kinda explain it
Hi!
MUN is basically about roleplaying countries and debating specific issues that may or may not apply to that country. The specific details on how it works change from conference to conference and committee to committee, but essentially you’re given a position as a country and are also given one or two topics to do research on. In committee, you talk with all the other delegates and try to come up with a solution in the form of a resolution.
Crisis committees are a different type of MUN committee, and in those you’re not guaranteed to be representing a country, you may be representing a specific person. Crisis committees are more fast-paced than a regular committee, and also involve writing directives usually, which are basically actions that you could be taking.
If you have any more specific questions, lmk!

Any tips for dealing with that big conference stress? This is my first time competing in something bigger than local or statewide and i’m panicking
Hey, I don’t know if I have any specific tips. I too, always get really stressed out, especially when speaking for the first few times, so for me, it’s just pushing myself over and actually standing up and speaking to the room that gets me through a lot more.
Research-wise, do as much research as you can, but also, remember that everyone is going to be looking at the topic a little differently, and there’s no way you can become a complete expert in ever aspect of the topic, and that is okay.
It’s also okay to know, especially in a big conference, that you’re probably not going to be the best. Don’t worry about that, although do look at what other successful delegates are doing and try to emulate their techniques.
For the most part, just do your best to remember that while yes, MUN can be competitive, above all it’s supposed to be fun, and it’s supposed to be about diplomacy.

i’ve had a few conferences get postponed or full out cancelled. 1 for october, 1 for november, and 1 for march. the one for october sucked because we spent all summer working on papers and solutions and it got cancelled a few weeks before we were supposed to go. i kinda hated my topic though so it’s alright.
i’ve done 1 online conference and 1 online mock conference and i’ve got another one this weekend. so far all 3 have utilized 3-4 different applications and it’s pretty hard balancing them all. i’m primarily a crisis del and in all 3 we’ve had to switch between zoom for the actual committee, slack for messaging and unmods, google drive and docs for publicsand joint privates, email for your backroom, and something for your research and speech plans. it’s definitely something that takes getting used to.
for me the hardest part is having to look at the camera and not everyones little zoom boxes. i feel like i draw off the energy of everyone else in the room when i give speeches and not being able to hear or really see (since i’m always in split screen) people’s reactions definitely makes it more difficult.
i think it’s pretty amazing that some conferences have been able to set up a virtual version so quickly.
Aww, it always sucks when conferences get cancelled. I know for last year, my senior year, the conferences I was looking forward to the most were cancelled and that really sucked, since it was my last chance to be a delegate. I was primarily a crisis del too, and the conferences i was going to were ones that had some unique committees that I was really looking forward to, which really sucked for me.
I did also staff a conference that moved online really quickly, but it wasn’t really a crisis committee or a general committee, so I don’t think making speeches and worrying about a lot of different areas was particularly relevant.
I 100% agree that the conferences that are able to cohesively put together an online version are doing amazing! Nothing can really quite replace what an in-person conference is like, but at least this way, delegates are still getting an opportunity to continue to practice what they need to! Good luck with the rest of your MUN career!

hey so i’m doing a crisis committee for the first time, any tips? especially for the directive i am absolutely lost there
Hey! Crisis committees are my favorite, and the main tip I have for beginners in crisis committees is have fun!
Crisis committees, since they’re much more fast paced and action-oriented than regular committees do require more attention to be paid during committee sessions. With regular committees, there are a couple of times that you can zone out, but in my experience with crisis committees, it doesn’t work as well.
As for directives, the main thing you need to remember is that the directive is an action that you are taking. I’m sure your dais will have some specific rules, regarding whether or not you can do private/public directives, and the specific things your directives can do. For example, if you’re the chief of army in one crisis, you may end up being the only one with the power to actually send forces to places. With crisis committees, there is a bit of a learning curve, but for the most part, the dais should be happy to help you figure it out!

This is like tangentially related to MUN, but how many people had their conferences cancelled for this year/next year? Also, how were people’s feelings about Zoom formatted conferences if they attended/staffed any?
I know that I staffed a Zoom conference, but the committee I was staffing was really unconventional so my experience with it is very different from most people’s

All the types of delegates you will ever encounter
The Russia
tries hard
usually very smart
commands the Asian countries for the most part
The USA
very loud
doesn’t try super hard
probably kind of gave up during second session
The Small Asian Country
Tries Their Best
like really this delegate is doing their very, very best
seriously you will not find someone more committed to actually solving the issue
The Gavel Hunter
gosh man it’s a gavel hunter
they will try to get a gavel, no matter who they have to kick off the sponsors’ list
also usually very competent
The one who traveled very far to get there
actually doesn’t talk much (unless they talk a lot)
occasionally mentions how much it will suck to go back home
just very tired

Hey! My first MUN is in 8 days, and I'm the youngest age allowed in the age limit. I'm egypt and from the SOCHUM community. Any tips?
Hi! So depending on what your topic is, and what your country’s stake in the topic is, your role will change. Your age shouldn’t matter too much, as most people don’t go around asking people about their ages (in my experience) but it may be different for you.
If you haven’t started researching yet, I would definitely recommend starting at Wikipedia, and also checking your country’s general stats. Anyways, feel free to ask any more questions, or questions about specific parts of the flow of committee.

here’s what clubs/sports/activities i think the atla characters would join in a modern high school au:
aang: signed up for every club and went to tryouts for every sport, but only shows up for latin club three times a year and has gone to maybe two baseball games. he loves being the waterboy for the basketball team though!
katara: model united nations, debate team, and environmental club. she isn’t particularly thrilled about doing her usual homework, but will grind out five hours of research about non-profit organizations that help fight world hunger. also, she’s nationally ranked for swimming!
sokka: like aang, he went to ALL of the tryouts but he only made it on the hockey team. sokka really loves hockey though, besides the waking up at 7am on saturdays for their weekly games. he’s also the treasurer of the student body, despite having nearly lost $450 because he was tempted to spend it on a field trip... we think he got elected off of pity votes
suki: captain of the cheer squad- the kyoshi warriors! president of the french club! track and field superstar! helps katara with model united nations, but only ever goes to the conferences when she can represent problematic countries just so she can mess with people.
toph: overall very apathetic when it comes to school, but runs the “Toph Club” which just an excuse for her to get a bunch of kids in a room and make fun of them. the only people that have made it in the “Toph Club” are suki, sokka, and katara. zuko couldn’t make it past the jokes about his scar. the coach won’t let her be on the rugby team, but the girls get together and play mock games with her on the weekends.
zuko: never voluntarily joins clubs, is literally always forced to by sokka or aang. he had to get a gym credit so he joined the track and field team he broke the pole vaulting pole during his first practice. he’s involved with student government because it’s 1) the only club that meets before school and 2) he gives sokka rides to school he crashed hakoda’s car so now zuko is his uber
azula: she went to tryouts for volleyball her freshman year and has been hooked on the sport ever since. in her off-season she also plays softball because she feeds off of being competitive and she’s a raging homo. she’s banned from most of the clubs, but will go to competitions with the debate team just to scare the other teams. azula also goes to any sporting event that involves cheerleaders... for the sports, of course
ty lee: cheerleader!!!! co-captain of the squad! she’s the captain of the gymnastics and dance teams! she’s also “on the volleyball team” even though everyone knows she’s there for azula. she signed up for GSA because she thought it sounded cute but was quickly pulled out of it by mai and azula.
mai: no clubs. she thinks it’s dumb she has to pay a participation fee to sit after school in a dirty classroom with a bunch of random people. she plays volleyball and softball with azula but is constantly irritated by how competitive she is. mai doesn’t seem like she tries that hard, but is by far the best player on the softball team.
yue: super popular and loved by everyone, except for mai and azula, so she got elected student body president. she’s on the swim team, in the school’s choir, and co-founder of the environmental club.

Hi there! I'm trying to join the MUN club at my school and there's a screening for club applicants. Do you have any tips that could help? It's my first time dealing with anything MUN-related so I'm really nervous. Thank you so much!!!
Hey, I’ve never had to worry about screening for joining the club, and I don’t really know what the club would be looking for. Reading up on what MUN is and how conferences in your area are run would be helpful. In general, learning about world issues also helps I would say.

So in my first conference i had a huge crush on a boy And on the last day of the conference , the seats were arranged differently by the chair and he was sitting 3 rows in front of me we were both on the left side and he was sitting with his best friend, then they whispered ,his bff said good luck and he took his chair and sat next to me . And he closed the hall and get up everytime a speaker was going to pass, apologised and sat back next to me again . He was so kind and i'll never forget him.
Aww, that’s so nice! MUN stories are always fun when they’re like this.

Hey for Crisis what’s the protocol for directives when you’re not technically a minister on the council?
I think this would be a question better suited for your dais. If it’s before the conference, definitely send them an email so you can know beforehand! Crisis is really variable from committee to committee, so I don’t have a ton of advice regarding this specific situation. Good luck!

i just wanted to say that we finally did get this kind of representation in Never Have I Ever, which while not perfect, did capture the true spirit of MUN.
Hey guys I just want to say shout out to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before for having the solid MUN representation. So far we’ve really only had Parks and Rec.
