Also idk if anyone’ll see this but if you can financially afford to support watcher streaming but don’t want to, maybe consider putting that money towards Palestinian aid, Palestinian GoFundMes, your local food bank or any local charities! I think that would be a better use for those $6/£5!

For those who don't know, Rafah Crossing is closed. Meaning Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are technically not allowed to go into Egypt through Rafah Crossing (with exceptions, like holding a foreign passport) so in order to evacuate, Palestinians need to bribe Egyptian border security officials. The standard price used to be about $5000 - 7000 per person but some Palestinians have been told to pay $10,000 per person just to cross the border, forget other expenses like food and boarding.
For a group of people who are enduring genocide and the complete destruction of their homes that money is impossible to raise without the help of fundraising. That and the collapse of the UNRWA is the reason you're seeing so many Gofundmes nowadays. The entire aid system is gone with the exception of local aid organisations that have limited reach.
So if you see a credible fundraiser, please at the very least share it so it can reach more people. This list by @el-shab-hussein is a good place to start.

please take everything you read with a grain of salt. misinformation spreads everywhere like wildfire, and i've been having major trouble wading through false journalism to get actual updates on everything. some resources i've compiled for myself and anyone who's interested:
fact sheet: israel and palestine conflict (october 2023)
live updates - intense israeli bombardments strike gaza as the war rages on
live updates - israel plans to step up attacks on the gaza strip
little light, no beds, not enough anesthesia: a view from the 'nightmare' of gaza's hospitals
what international law has to say about the israel-hamas war
a dangerous new phase in the israeli-palestinian conflict - expert commentary by the foreign policy research institute (FPRI)
the global conflict tracker (israeli-palestinian conflict)
the arab-israeli war of 1948
the 1967 arab-israeli war
the 1973 arab-israeli war
dr. ghassan abu sitta is a doctor on-site who's also been reporting about the atrocities transpiring in gaza.
also some palestinian aid orgs to donate to. if you have some money to spare/know anyone who does, please consider donating/spreading the word:
palestine children's relief fund
palestine red crescent society
medical aid for palestine
gaza emergency appeal
donate to arab.org with one click
the middle east children's alliance gaza emergency fund
help UNRWA USA reach their palestinian aid fundraiser goal

My favourite piece of content that ryan and shane ever came out with was the hotdaga. It was literally just clipart of hotdogs being dragged around the screen with ryan bergara in the back with his head in his hands, and it was great because it perfectly encapsulated the charm of two best friends being silly together. And that's what made me love their videos in the first place- it was just two goofy guys fucking around trying to scare each other and make the other laugh. It didn't matter that their budget was an empty desk and five JPEGS of some hotdogs... Their leaving YouTube announcement just reminded me of how much I miss that.

So hello! I'm sitting here stewing over the Watcher news. Like. I too, firmly believe in creators getting paid. But like, also, they have to create content people WANT to watch. I don't watch any of Steven Lim's stuff.
A lot of people have talked about it but, there's something so viscerally infuriating about watching someone eat, which is basically half of my paycheck or more on a single dish. I don't like it! I don't watch it. And the fact that they've confirmed that at least a portion of their content is going to be that moving forward means that that would be the content I'm paying for.
And I won't do it. I will go back and watch podcasts. I actually stopped listening to most of their content in favor of other channels at this point, like I swapped over a lot of the content to Simon Whistlers channels (shout out to him and his writing team) because it covers a lot of the topics that Watcher covered, but it greater detail and with the same-ish bias.
Sure. Creatives deserve to be paid for their work. But when you're asking your community, which is barely getting by, suffering record inflation and a housing crisis "please pay for our videos" the answer for a lot of them is going to be "no" because they can't afford it or don't think that the content you make is worth it.
You can make it about the righteousness of paying creators if you want, but realize, most of these people are supporting creators. I'm subscribed to about five patreons which are about the cost of Watcher. I do not value Watchers content more than these others creators I'm subscribed to currently, and will not cancel one of those subscriptions for this. And that's fine. One third of their content being unpalatable (haha) to me means it isn't worth that money.
So I'll unsubscribe. I'll watch other content and be on with it.

every once in a while i hear people say "i don't like taylor swift, but you have to admit she's a good lyricist" while the lyrics off her new album are "we smoked and ate seven bars of chocolate"

people are acting like we’re saying creators shouldn’t be paid for their work; they absolutely should. and watcher already is. they have a patreon, they get sponsors, their videos regularly get millions of views which gives them ad revenue, they sell merch; they are getting paid. feeling indignant and disappointed that they’re asking us to pay for content we were already getting for free isn’t entitlement, it’s expected. they wanted to make bigger produced shows and now their budget can’t sustain it, that’s not on the viewer to make up for
