Record Store Day 2023 is fast approaching and I still haven't spun all my RSD Black Friday pickups! 😲 . I like what Ringo does. His catalog is a tad smaller than the other lads so he stocks his band with former members of other bands and turns it into a greatest hits collection of hits! See pic 3 for the songs performed on this tour. Men At Work, Toto, Average White Band, Santana, and of course Ringo's biggest songs! . I've been able to catch a couple iterations of Ringo's All Starr band, and hope to attend again. Still on my Laurel Canyon kick. This is a band that might be a bit lesser known, but was right there in the Canyon with all the bigger names. . This is "Love - Forever Changes." It was an expensive blind buy as its the 45rpm MoFi press, but it is an amazing album. Released in 1967, its on the cusp of the Canyon sound and the Summer of Love, but it still fits the SoCal sound wonderfully. So....apparently there's a thing where IG vinyl collectors pick a fellow collector and send them a few records! Karmic Record Redistribution! Who knew... . After a busy IG February I basically took March off. I'm back in April! lol . One weekend in March I decided to just head up to LA. I went to Laurel Canyon and stopped by the little canyon store that has so much history. (Pic 3) Because of that, I am on a Laurel Canyon artist kick. This is Crosby Stills and Nash's self titled debut album. It's a reissue; I think I have it on cassette from a long time ago, but it sounds wonderful. . Today's #febvinylchallenge topic is Cats. . You can see the character holding a cat on the cover, and cats play a pretty important role in this movie. Whether accidentally letting it out of the house where he's couch surfing, or even later in the movie when it gets out of the car in the middle of the road.This is the Vinyl Me Please reissue. Some people on Reddit said that it sounded a little scratchy but my copy sounds pretty good. Of the 2000 made this is number 1880. . The topic for today's #febvinylchallenge is Full Circle. There...is a full circle around the...the microphone on this cover. . It was a thin exuse to spin February's classic VMP release Black Nasty with their one and only album Talking to the People. (I got tired of trying to capture my typical close up of the album cover without a reflection of my hand or myself in the black album color, so I put a picture of the back as my 2nd shot.) . This is my 1st spin, and although I can't recommend it yet, I am enjoying it! The booklet that comes with it describes them as a sort of precursor to Parliament/Funkadelic. But I hear them more as a soundtrack to a blaxploitation movie. Could hear most any of these songs thus far on Coffy or Sweet Sweetback. #edgarandrolandsfebvinylchallenge topic today is A Spot of Trouble. Let's see....MoFi was in a spot of trouble when it was revealed they added a digital step to their mastering process? Yeah...just an excuse to play more Burt! ♥️ . This is the OMR copy of his collaboration with Elvis Costello. Stream it first, but I love these songs. They harken back to Mr Bacharach's 70s work, and Elvis' voice glides along the melodies perfectly. . My fav Burt Bacharach memory: When my lovely lady and I went to Hawaii we popped into a piano dinner bar. The pianist took requests and we asked for Burt. She played his songs for the next hour. Afterwards we went back to hotel, sat on the balcony, and listened to Burt/Dionne Warwick overlooking the ocean and holding each other. Today's #febvinylchallenge topic is A Good Sport. I give you...Barry F'ing Gibb . In the late seventies the BeeGees were everywhere! Owning the top of the charts, couldn't turn on a TV show without one of them appearing, and totally saturating the radio airwaves. Cut to a year or two after that crest, and they become the poster child for the anti disco movement. . And don't get me wrong, the disco genre had devolved into often just a money making scheme. Music to sell records and clothing instead of art. But the BeeGees did not fit that category, even though they were very successful with that style. It would be easy for Barry to just hide and count his money. But he has been a good sport as people like the Foo Fighters record their songs on this album. And he even made an appearance on Saturday Night Live on the Barry Gibb talk show! Day 8's Topic is simply: Riff. Bassists have riffs too, and John Taylor created some great ones in the 80s! . The riff that came to mind was Rio. This RSD BF album opens with the song, with Andy stretching his typical lines a bit making this a great version. 1982 was their heyday, and this album avoids some of their later tunage that I don't enjoy as much as their first two albums. . I was able to meet the band backstage in '87 but the Capitol Records rep never sent me the pic we took. Today's February Vinyl Challenge topic is Six Pack. I decided to go with an artist that had exactly 6 albums. . So...I hear you. "A greatest hits album isn't really an album, is it?" Today's February Vinyl Challenge topic is Wild Child. I went a different direction with what I assume many will do for this topic, but hear me out on Jermaine... . Jermaine was 1 of 11 children. Thus far he has fathered 8. But when the rest of the Jackson 5 signed with Epic records, this wild child went rogue and stayed with Motown. He was married to Barry Gordon's daughter so it was his way of staying loyal to his other family. Real Wild Child stuff. (Broke Michael's heart too.) . This is his 1984 self titled album. His 1st on Arista records after he also left Motown. I didn't know this until I looked up a little bit about the album but it includes a then unknown Whitney Houston singing lead on one track with Jermaine, and background on another!
