In general Ayumu has trouble taking the plunge with new/foreign things. Whether that be school idols or even just other hobbies or activities. It even shows in her "gamer" side where she's introduced to a video game by someone else (Rina's game in Nijiyon, Setsuna reccing Fromsoft in LLDays) and Ayumu turns out to be unexpectedly good at it.

(I actually headcanon that skillwise, Setsuna is a general gamer who plays a wide variety of games but when it comes to competitive play she's hard stuck silver. Meanwhile Ayumu plays a very limited variety of games but she could become a freak of nature if you left her with a challenge and 24 hours)

I also hc that as a result, Ayumu rarely explores on her own (if she does it's quite slow and restrained). So she might really just end up playing 3 videogames but becoming weirdly good at them.

Ayumu just needs someone to give her that gentle push at the start... 🥺

And you're so right with Setsuna!! I think the whole "I can't encroach on anyone" is an anxiety that she carries in general that is probably linked with her tendency to want to please everyone (which in itself is linked to wanting to keep her parents happy and the origin of her double identity). I remember there being a SIFAS daily theater where she even backsteps her own words because she didn't want to appear overly passionate about anime (ie. cringe) to Chika... (which would potentially make Chika uncomfortable and that's illegal!!!)

I hc that it's an anxiety she carries well into adulthood that her partner would have to ease her out of. Setsuna would rarely ask things for others because she'd think it as greedy or selfish (when in actuality, her partner would want to do acts of service for her.

And yeah... Ayumu is inspiring to her... 😭😭😭 I think Setsuna is really paradoxical in that despite being so overtly passionate she still feels strong anxiety thinking that passion will drive people away (ie. disband the club; demotivate others etc etc). I think Setsuna's aware of this so to her, Ayumu is someone so very brave and admirable.

Man I really need to do a proper SetsuAyu writeup because this is what I'd talk about... When it comes to passion and following one's ambitions, I see Setsuna much like a racehorse. It's an amazing display of speed and power but if anything goes wrong she folds very easily. She also tends to have tunnel vision like she's wearing one of those blinders. If there's a goal she wants to see through, she'll go for it - but lose sight of the sidelines.

Ayumu is a lot more slower. "Step by step", right? She's still learning to believe in herself but she steadily marches ahead while remembering to smell the flowers. While Setsuna is more of a defeatist, Ayumu is very hardy when it comes to failure. She even expects it at times. (Esp early SIFAS writing had her being accepting of being one of the less popular members). It's even in her Yume e no Ippo lyrics about life having many stumbles. But she's able to keep stepping forward regardless. I think Ayumu has a strong fortitude for that reason. (Hence, the aptitude for challenging games lmfao)

I think combined, the two complement each other! Setsuna inspiring Ayumu and giving her courage. Ayumu reigning Setsuna in and reminding her to cherish the now as well as their dreams. And it's a theme I keep coming back to in my own writing. To me, SetsuAyu embodies having an ambition, chasing it but never forgetting what's in front of you 😊

Setsuna's goal is to shout her love and inspire others to do the same. That's why watching Yu learn piano and watching Ayumu continue to blossom is something that sends her to the moon with happiness... Setsuna wants to foster an environment others can be unabashedly passionate.

My take with the season 1 conflict is that painting Ayumu’s jealousy purely as a romantic thing does a big disservice to her character. For me the key thing about it is that she’s so so afraid. She’s so anxious and it’s hit a critical point. She clings to Yu’s side because Yu doesn’t change. Yu is always there for her! But when this whole idol thing starts Yu starts changing - she goes from floating about in life to having a dream and this once steady anchor starts floating around and god damn Ayumu is terrified! I could talk on and on about this but all the visual symbolism in Dream With You really screams that Ayumu wants time to stop and for now to be forever but it’s 1am !!!

But yes you’re right about everything … Setsuna and Ayumu are actually alike in that way….. 🥹🥹🥹

I’m going to think about them sharing an umbrella for the rest of my life….

Setsuna's significance when it comes to Ayumu's drive and passion is something that I absolutely love and keep coming back to over and over in my own works. Ayumu who was initially timid and uncertain goes through a lot of growth during Nijigasaki's story. While Setsuna isn't the single-contributing factor... she's undeniably the beginning. And I really love that. 😊

When compared to Yu's feelings for Setsuna, I always felt that Ayumu's feelings weren't as emphasized. But that didn't mean that she didn't feel them as intensely! There were always little hints of Setsuna's importance to her.

During the OVA particularly, I really wanted Ayumu to tell those feelings to Setsuna herself instead of mentioning them to Shioriko. I bet it would make Setsuna cry...!

But then it happened in Nijiyon! Finally these feelings said aloud and with so much passion 😭😭😭

Technically I don't have to make a setsupomu ☂ pilgrimage because I already did when I was in Odaiba in January LOL

Our hotel was actually around this location so I walked on this path twice a day for awhile. I took a bunch of photos because I thought it was scenic (not bc of stpm clairvoyance).
